2008 Big 12 Tournament

Rush, Chalmers honored: Brandon Rush (most outstanding player) and Mario Chalmers were KU's representatives on the all-tournament team. They were joined by Texas' D.J. Augustin, A.J. Abrams and Damion James. Rush also was all-tourney last year. He's the fourth Jayhawk to be named the tourney most outstanding player, joining Chalmers (2006), Paul Pierce (1997, 1998) and Jeff Boschee (1999).

¢

Stats galore: KU also hit 15 threes against North Carolina State on Dec. 10, 1994. The school record is 16 against Baylor on Jan. 25, 2005. ... KU dished 25 assists on 26 baskets. ... Chalmers hit a career-best eight threes, a season high for a KU player. He bested his previous mark of six threes made versus UMKC on November 11, 2007. ... Chalmers' eight threes were the most for a Kansas player since Billy Thomas made eight versus Texas on Jan. 10, 1998. ... Chalmers' 30 points were most by a Jayhawk this season, topping the 28 scored by Rush in a semifinal win over Texas A&M. His 30 points tied a KU record for points in a Big 12 Championship. Pierce (vs. Missouri, 1997) and Wayne Simien (vs. Oklahoma State, 2005) also hit for 30. ... Rush's six threes tied a career high. He had six versus Kentucky on March 18, 2007. ... Rush hit 13 threes in the tourney for a KU Big 12 Championship record. Boschee iced nine in the '99 championships. ... Sherron Collins tied a career high with seven assists. He also made four of four free throws in the last five minutes on his way to nine points. ... Darrell Arthur (16 points) has scored in double figures in 26 games. ... Sasha Kaun had a season-high eight rebounds. ... KU outscored the Longhorns 15-0 in fast-break points and 16-2 in bench points.

¢

Statistical anomaly: KU coach Bill Self pointed out one crazy stat:

"They had four turnovers, and we won that game," Self said of the Longhorns, who had four bobbles to Kansas' 10.

¢

Playground basketball: Of the fast-paced game, KU's Russell Robinson said: "It was like a game of H-O-R-S-E out there. We were just trading threes back and forth. We got that last little run and opened it up."

I sure hope we didn't use up all of our 3 pointers, we're going to need to stay hot from 3 to win it all!

How can UT have 3 players on the all-tourney team and we only have 2?

It makes sense. Those three players were outstanding, whereas no one else on UT really stood out. KU, on the other hand, had the two dominant performances by Mario and Brandon, and a lot of other good performances.

It's truly incredible that KU won despite UT having only four turnovers. That couldn't have happened very often for ANY team.

There have been times (including twice for KU in the Final Four -- B.J. Born in '53 and Wilt in '57) when a team has lost in a tournament and still had the most outstanding player. Just because a team loses doesn't mean they can't have one or more players stand out.

the More Sasha kaun is on the bench the better chance KU has of winning it all. you saw that in this game. He sucks and his free throw woes are enough to scare him from playing too much in tourney. He should be used to foul big guys, but the plan was to pound it inside and get fouled. KU did that but Kaun could not make a free throw so he was pulled. And rightedly so.. Spelling...?

Other than Darrell, none of our bigs were effective offensively yesterday, but that has a lot to do with the fact that both Mario and Brandon were red hot. Darnell, our most consistent big throughout the year, was merely a footnote yesterday while basically three guys (Mario, Brandon, Darrell) did the offensive work (combined for 65 of our 84). I don't fault Sasha (or any of our other guys) for not having a real strong offensive game. They made sure that our hottest hands got lots of touches.

I actually agree that Texas' 3 guys should have been on the all tourney team. Who else from our team deserves it? Darrell had two of his worst games of the year before redeeming himself in the final. If Mario doesn't go bonkers yesterday, it would be tough to include him. Darnell didn't really have any big games. Sherron was solid, but not incredible. Like I said above, our other guys made the adjustment to get the hot hands more touches. That will help us as we advance in the tournament.

kstatetraiter, that's ridiculous. Sasha has been very valuable to the team this year. He's been tremendous defensively the whole year, he's great at all the little things like setting picks, and even his offense has improved a lot. I agree that he should not be in at the end because of his FT shooting, but even there he's not that atypical of a player his size. I'm not saying he's the best player on the team, but to say he "sucks" and the more he's on the bench the better is just plain ignorant.

And let's not also forget the intensity and energy that he brings every minute he's on the floor. Sometimes the rest of the team needs that infusion of energy.

very well said actorman. Sasha has some flaws, but he also helps the team in other ways such as offensive rebounding and defense. He might not hit as many ft's as you would like but no one goes up stronger than him on the team. This is the year! Hawks at the alamo!

kstatetraiter - Anyone that thinks that Sasha is not VERY valuable to this team is NUTS.

The energy he's been bringing is outstanding. His improvements this year are incredible.

Didn't you hear the announcer quote what an NBA scout said over the weekend ... that Sasha has the best chance of anyone on KU's team to have a long term NBA career? It was repeated several times, that he'll make a great 12 year backup center in the NBA.

kstatetraiter... Everyone said it much nicer than I would have... I was going to start talking about what a moron you are. Anyway... you obviously have the same basketball IQ as most K-State fans, so why don't you just stick with them? Seriously.
