Leavenworth High senior Wayne Simien, who suffered a right shoulder injury in last Friday’s boys basketball game against SM East, will have an MRI taken on the shoulder today to determine whether he has a torn ligaments.

Torn ligament in the Kansas University signee’s shoulder would recovery surgery that would shelve Simien up to six months.

If Simien has no tear, the 6-foot-9, 240-pounder would possibly be able to return for the Class 6A state playoffs. He’d be out about three weeks.

“What they (doctors) said was they are 60 to 70 percent sure he has torn ligaments,” Wayne Simien, Sr., said Sunday. “He’s pretty depressed. It’s one more thing we’ve been through.”

Wayne Jr., had a heart problem taken care of medically after last season. He also had knee surgery performed by family doctor Ken Wertzberger of Lawrence when he was in eighth grade. In the early 1990s, Wertzberger also performed surgery on Wayne, Sr.

Simien’s shoulder popped out of place when he hooked arms with an East player Saturday.
