Kansas City, Mo. Texas could make it all the way to the Alamodome, play as well as it did Sunday afternoon in the Sprint Center and win the national title with a performance of that caliber.
And the Longhorns lost by 10 points in the Big 12 title game. That’s how well Kansas performed in winning its third consecutive conference tournament title, 84-74, in a game that featured as entertaining a first half of basketball the Jayhawks were a part of since playing Oklahoma to a 50-50 tie in the first half of the 1988 national title game.
D.J. Augustin, Justin Mason and Damion James were on fire from long distance to lead Texas to a 46-45 halftime lead against a Kansas team that was fueled by Mario Chalmers and Brandon Rush catching fire from the outside.
“It was like we were out there playing horse,” KU’s Darnell Jackson said. “D.J. makes a three. Mario makes a three. James makes a three. Brandon makes a three. Back and forth and back and forth. It was a lot of fun. Everybody was making shots, and it was just a lot of fun to be out there watching guys making shots.”
Rush and Chalmers combined to make nine of 13 three-pointers in the first half. For Texas, Augustin, James and Justin Mason combined to bury eight of nine threes.
It’s no coincidence that now that Sherron Collins is back to full speed — pushing the action so aggressively in transition and forcing defenses to collapse on him in the halfcourt — Rush and Chalmers have become monsters.
Rush scored 47 points in the final two games to earn tourney outstanding-player honors. Chalmers is gunning at a .564 accuracy rate in KU’s past nine games.
“He made plays for himself and for us by dishing out for open threes,” Rush said of Collins. “I think he was our unsung hero.”
Any doubts about KU’s ability to close games vanished with great stretch play against Texas A&M and Texas.
“We desperately needed this tournament because we really haven’t played that many close games in the league,” KU coach Bill Self said. “We won one game in the league that wasn’t double figures, so we needed this. The Nebraska game was perfect for us. They whipped us the first half and made us play from behind. A&M took us to the last minute, obviously, two-point game with a minute left, and we had to play great to win. And then tonight, that’s as good a team as we can play.”
The road to the Final Four will be every bit as bumpy as the one Kansas negotiated in Kansas City.
If Kansas advances to the Elite Eight and faces No. 2 seed Georgetown in Detroit, it will meet a team that will try to force a slower pace of play, the way Nebraska did, yet Georgetown’s talent level is more on a par with that of Texas.
Three games need to be won to get that far, but for those backing the Jayhawks, Georgetown will be the team on which to keep an eye, against which to root, the giant-filled roster pitching a tent in the backs of the minds of those dreaming about celebrating the 20-year anniversary of a national title with another one.

Georgetown is overrated. They have Hibbert and and Ewing Jr. but with all their talent they are underachievers. I'm not too worried about them or Wisconsin. I wouldn't be surprised if K-State or USC advances to the Elite 8 honestly.

Keegan is On-The Record rooting for Georgetown! Don't let him forget it, because you know he wouldn't let us!!

Georgetown is in much the same position as we are. They went to the national semifinals last year and are back hungry. Hibbert is a senior, so this is his last go around, as are a couple of their other players. They play a slower pace and outstanding defense. Before the brackets were announced they were in a group of five teams that I thought could legitimately win the title (KU, UCLA, Tennessee and Pitt being the others). I think we can beat them, but we will have to play very efficiently against them. Hibbert will give us some trouble because of his size - until you are on the floor with someone that big, it's hard to appreciate how much space they really take up. Georgetown has top shelf talent, on par with the best 12-15 teams in the country and they really play on the defensive end. This isn't meant to sound like an endorsement of Georgetown, but I honestly believe they are substantially better than the bottom half of that bracket. USC is the only team in that half that will give them trouble.

Georgetown is overrated? Did you watch the Big East Tournament? Mentioning Hibbert (head case) and Ewing (doesn't start) as those to watch tells me you haven't followed Gtown much. Keep an eye on Mr. Sapp. Keep an eye on their LOCK DOWN defense. Should we win? Yes! Am I worried? Yes!

Players more important that Ewing on Georgetown:
Hibbert, Wallace, Summers, Sapp, Freeman and Wright
I believe Jr. has started all of the second half of the season, but he is a minor role player in this system.

Better be thinking "Clemson" that's the sleeper.

One game at a time!
With that said, I would much rather play a slow it down type team than a high scoring team. I want to see DA, DJ, Sasha, and Cole run Hibbert into the ground!

I don't much give a flying flip about Georgetown yet. I do care about Portland, then Clemson, then Vanderbilt.
There must not be any Bucknell crap happening during the first three rounds!
Every game must be viewed as if the opposition is number 1.

How much longer until the columnist swap is over? I'm sure whoever got farmed out to the Texas paper is ready to get back to Lawrence.
And as much as Keegan clearly doesn't care for KU or the Jayhawks, surely he is ready to head back to Texas. He would clearly be much happier in Texas writing about his true love. I don't know about anyone else, but I am weary of seeing his backhanded, passive-aggressive opinion of the Jayhawks in the Lawrence paper.

"Keegan is On-The Record rooting for Georgetown! Don't let him forget it, because you know he wouldn't let us!!"
??????????????
This is what Keegan said: "Georgetown will be the team on which to keep an eye, AGAINST which to root ..."
Please explain to me how, in your tortured logic, advocating to root AGAINST someone means Keegan is on the record rooting FOR them. Is that akin to bombing the village in order to save them?

Can GTown beat Wisconsin, USC or Ksuck? Clemson is the only team in upper part of the bracket that I think can give us game. The bottom half is stacked.

BC,
We can play either Vandy or Clemson, not both, since they would have to play each other in the 2nd round if both win.

I am by far more worried about a KU/Wisconsin match-up than a KU/G-Town game. Not only is Wisconsin tougher to defend, the game would be in Detroit, which will give the Badgers more of a home court advantage.

The best move was to get Sasha out of the game when he started bricking free throws. I hope he gets it together so he can stay in the game

He's never going to be a great free throw shooter, so he'll probably never be in at the end of a close game (unless others have fouled out). But he still contributes in plenty of other ways.

Sasha has improved his game and his free throw shooting this yaer. He is still the worst on the team shooting FTs, but much better than previous years.
Sasha is a niche player and he fits the KU system very well, but he is a general liability in most situations. Coach Self has used him very well this year!

I'm not sure who scares me more out of those teams. Either one of them could give KU a battle (as we already saw when KU played at USC).
