How they scored

FIRST QUARTER

5:15 – Aqib Talib 60 interception return. Virginia Tech quarterback Tyrod Taylor – the weaker passer of VT’s two-quarterback system – delivered a quick throw to Justin Harper on a second-down out route. Talib jumped in front of the pass, picked it and was off down the sideline. He went untouched for six points, but received an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty for doing a Deion Sanders high-step the final 10 yards. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 7, Virginia Tech 0).

SECOND QUARTER

12:00 – Scott Webb 32 field goal. KU freshman Chris Harris intercepted a Sean Glennon pass to give the Jayhawks the ball with great field position. Kansas went just 17 yards on seven plays, and Webb came in and chipped the field goal through to make up for his missed kick in the first quarter. (Kansas 10, Virginia Tech 0).

7:03 – Marcus Henry 13 pass from Todd Reesing. The Jayhawks faced a third-and-19 at one point in the 10-play drive, but got 18 yards on a Jake Sharp reception and then converted on fourth down the next play. Four plays later, Reesing found Henry on the right side near the goal line, and Henry caught it while falling into the end zone. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 17, Virginia Tech 0).

1:24 – Branden Ore 1 run. Virginia Tech made no secret that Ore would be its horse for this 13-play drive. Ore ran 49 yards on 11 carries by himself, always getting positive yardage on his runs. The last was a simple carry up the middle, where Ore crossed the goal line standing up. Jud Dunlevy kick. (Kansas 17, Virginia Tech 7).

THIRD QUARTER

11:35 – Justin Harper 84 punt return. KU’s opening drive of the second half stalled, bringing Virginia Tech’s dangerous special-teams unit on to the field. Tucker punted to VT’s Eddie Royal, who sprinted to his right and handed the ball to Harper on a reverse. Harper sprinted up the left sideline, making his way through congestion unfazed. Micah Brown made a desperate lunge for Harper’s feet inside the five-yard line, but Harper eluded it. Dunlevy kick. (Kansas 17, Virginia Tech 14).

FOURTH QUARTER

10:57 – Reesing 2 run. Kansas received a much-needed jolt thanks to its defense. On third down, VT quarterback Sean Glennon overthrew a pass that was intercepted by Justin Thornton at the VT 32. Thornton returned it 30 yards, setting up KU’s one-play, two-yard drive. Reesing kept a play-action and bullied his way into the end zone on the right side, celebrating wildly when he got up. Webb kick. (Kansas 24, Virginia Tech 14).

3:00 – Justin Harper 20 pass from Sean Glennon. The Hokies stormed downfield, surviving fourth downs and a swarming Kansas defense to go 78 yards on 15 plays. The final play was a bullet pass to the right side of the field. Harper came down with it in traffic and stepped over the goal line. Dunlevy kick. (Kansas 24, Virginia Tech 21).

FIRST QUARTER

No scoring.

SECOND QUARTER

No scoring.

THIRD QUARTER

9:16 – Scott Webb 31 field goal. Kansas drew first blood at long last, booting a field goal after driving into scoring range. Completions of 12, 14 and 10 yards were the big gains of the 10-play drive, but it stalled, and Webb knocked it through to give Kansas the lead. (Kansas 3, Texas A&M 0).

5:04 – Brandon McAnderson 6 run. After Texas A&M badly shanked a punt to give Kansas great field position, the Jayhawks drove 54 yards in a balanced attack. KU alternated run and pass for the first six plays before McAnderson took an inside handoff and bullied his way across the goal line. Webb kick. (Kansas 10, Texas A&M 0).

:08 – Webb 32 field goal. Completions of 19, 11 and 14 yards by Reesing put Kansas at goal to go. Two incompletions and a sack stalled the drive, and Webb connected on his second field goal of the night. (Kansas 13, Texas A&M 0).

FOURTH QUARTER

11:29 – Brandon McAnderson 3 run. A John Larson fumble recovery gave Kansas great field position, and McAnderson took over from there. McAnderson rushed for 40, 1, minus-1, and then rumbled in for a three-yard touchdown to put Kansas up three possessions. A Kerry Meier run for the two-point conversion failed. (Kansas 19, Texas A&M 0).

7:20 – Matt Szymanski 21 field goal. The Aggies finally got on the scoreboard after a 16-play, 70-yard drive gave them a chance to score – but not as many points as they’d like. The KU defense stepped up once A&M was goal-to-go, and the Aggies had to kick the field goal to get within two scores. (Kansas 19, Texas A&M 3).

2:06 – Roger Holland 32 pass from Stephen McGee. Texas A&M was forced to rely on its passing game, which isn’t its strength. But it worked on a six-play, 80-yard drive, the last a fantastic catch by Holland despite Chris Harris providing good coverage. McGee ran in for the two-point conversion. (Kansas 19, Texas A&M 11)

FIRST QUARTER

6:16 – Safety, ball snapped out of the end zone. Southeastern Louisiana faced fourth-and-two from its 28-yard line when the Lions’ long snapper sailed the snap over punter Cody Samples’ head. Tang Bacheyie went hard after the ball, but Samples pounced on it and batted it out the back of the end zone for the safety. (Kansas 2, Southeastern Louisiana 0).

6:07 – Marcus Herford 74 free kick return. SE Louisiana chose to use its kicker to boot the free kick from the 20-yard line instead of the punter. Herford caught the ball on the KU 26-yard line, slipped through a hole and ran to the left sideline. He then made a juke and outran the kicker and scored the 6. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 9, Southeastern Louisiana 0).

SECOND QUARTER

14:35 – Brandon McAnderson 4 run. The scoring play was set up when quarterback Todd Reesing rolled out to his right and launched the ball downfield to a wide-open Marcus Henry for a 66-yard gain. McAnderson scored on the next play by going between the tackles. Webb kick. (Kansas 16, Southeastern Louisiana 0).

8:29 – Aqib Talib 36 pass from Todd Reesing. Reesing completed two passes in a row for a combined 68 yards. He threw across his body and hit Derek Fine for 32 yards, then threw a bomb to Talib, which the usual cornerback hauled in under single coverage. The play completed a five-play, 92-yard drive. Two-point conversion attempt failed when Reesing’s pass fell incomplete. (Kansas 22, Southeastern Louisiana 0).

4:07 – Brandon McAnderson 2 run. The Lions had to punt out of their own end zone, and an 18-yard return by Raimond Pendleton gave Kansas a short field. McAnderson took an inside handoff and ran through two defenders, barely crossing the goal line. Webb kick. (Kansas 29, Southeastern Louisiana 0).

THIRD QUARTER

12:07 – Scott Webb 33 field goal. Reesing and the KU offense plugged their way downfield, with a 20-yard pass to Dexton Fields and a 17-yard reception by Marcus Henry. The drive stalled with two straight incompletions, and Webb came in to boot the field goal. (Kansas 32, Southeastern Louisiana 0).

7:11 – Dexton Fields 25 pass from Todd Reesing. Kansas marched downfield through the air, going 64 yards on just five plays. Reesing found Fields going left to right over the middle, and Fields slipped into the front-right corner of the end zone for the touchdown. Webb kick. (Kansas 39, Southeastern Louisiana 0).

5:28 – Safety, Maxwell Onyegbule sacked Brian Babin in the end zone. On third down, Onyegbule broke through the Lions’ offensive line and chased down Babin, sacking him just behind the goal line for KU’s second safety of the day. (Kansas 41, Southeastern Louisiana 0).

3:51 – Jake Sharp 24 pass from Kerry Meier. Meier relieved Todd Reesing at the beginning of the drive and orchestrated a short march into the end zone. The scoring play was a shovel pass to Sharp at the line of scrimmage, and Sharp weaved through defenders and blockers and tumbled into the end zone. Webb kick. (Kansas 48, Southeastern Louisiana 0).

FOURTH QUARTER

12:41 – Jake Sharp 3 run. Kerry Meier’s 40-yard quarterback scramble put the Jayhawks in the red zone yet again, and Sharp punctuated the drive by shedding a tackler and crossing the goal line for 6. Webb kick. (Kansas 55, Southeastern Louisiana 0).

5:23 – Carmon Boyd-Anderson 2 run. Boyd-Anderson took over running-back duties and did most of the work on the 32-yard drive. The score was on an option run right, where Meier pitched it as he was being hit, and Boyd-Anderson scooted in. Webb kick. (Kansas 62, Southeastern Louisiana 0).

FIRST QUARTER

12:28 – Bret Culbertson 36 field goal. Iowa State failed to pick up a first down on its first offensive series, but the field position gained by forcing Kerry Meier to fumble had ISU in range for three, which Culbertson converted. (Iowa State 3, Kansas 0).

9:32 – Brian Murph 50 pass from Kerry Meier. Facing third down and six yards to go, Meier swung out and hit Murph about 10 yards downfield for what should’ve been a short gain. Murph turned and slipped past two ISU defenders, then outran three more for the unexpected touchdown. Scott Webb point-after kick blocked. (Kansas 6, Iowa State 3).

1:07 – Derek Fine 29 pass from Todd Reesing. With the wind in KU’s face, a 47-yard field goal was unrealistic. Kansas went for it on fourth down instead, and Reesing scrambled toward the line of scrimmage and threw a jump ball toward Fine in the right corner of the end zone. Fine and ISU’s Jason Harris appeared to have possession as they came down with it, and three officials met near the play before deciding it was Fine’s ball. A review upheld the call. Webb kick. (Kansas 13, Iowa State 3).

SECOND QUARTER

5:23 – Fine 3 pass from Meier. Kansas went on an eight-play, 43-yard drive, gaining positive yardage on every play. On second and goal, Meier lobbed a pass to the back of the end zone to Fine, who was a step ahead of the coverage. Webb kick. (Kansas 20, Iowa State 3).

:23 – Brandon McAnderson 4 run. A 43-yard pass from Meier to Jonathan Lamb gave Kansas a legitimate chance to score just before halftime. After getting in the red zone, Kansas faced third down on the four-yard line. Meier pitched to McAnderson, who appeared ready to pass the ball. Instead, he tucked it, cut back the opposite direction and scored untouched. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 27, Iowa State 3).

THIRD QUARTER

6:23 – Reesing 1 run. Punting near his own end zone, the Cyclones’ Mike Brandtner dropped the snap and then got pummeled by several Jayhawks after picking the ball up, falling at the one-yard line and changing possession. On KU’s first offensive play, Reesing ran the option right, kept it and dove into the end zone for the touchdown. Webb kick. (Kansas 34, Iowa State 3).

FOURTH QUARTER

11:11 – McAnderson 1 run. Kansas moved 90 yards on 12 plays, starting with a 32-yard run by Jon Cornish and continuing with a fourth-down conversion. A Lamb reception put Kansas at the one, and McAnderson bullied it in on the next play. Webb kick. (Kansas 41, Iowa State 3).

4:57 – Ryan Kock 1 run. Iowa State took over at midfield after a botched snap by Reesing and moved 44 yards on 10 plays. On third down and a long one, Kock rammed it up the gut and into the end zone for Iowa State’s first touchdown. Culbertson kick. (Kansas 41, Iowa State 10).

FIRST QUARTER

4:51 – Mason Crosby 37 field goal. A late-hit penalty by Mike Rivera prolonged what was an all-but-dead drive, and Colorado capitalized by getting into field-goal range. The 37-yard field goal was merely a chip shot for the All-America kicker. (Colorado 3, Kansas 0).

SECOND QUARTER

8:57 – Crosby 26 field goal. Colorado moved the ball downfield thanks to the ground game of Hugh Charles and Mell Holliday, moving 49 yards to the Kansas 11. The drive stalled there, though, and Crosby poked his second three-pointer through the uprights. (Colorado 6, Kansas 0).

:41 – Crosby 32 field goal. Kansas had its drive prolonged by a roughing-the-kicker penalty, only to see Adam Barmann throw an interception that instantly put Colorado in Crosby’s range. Four play later, Crosby booted his third field goal of the half. (Colorado 9, Kansas 0).

THIRD QUARTER

4:35 – Jon Cornish 22 pass from Todd Reesing. Reesing’s arm took center stage, as he completed two passes for 64 yards and had another bullet fall incomplete, only to be called defensive pass interference. On first down at the 22, Reesing dumped it off to Cornish in front of the left tackle, and Cornish sprinted in untouched for six. Scott Webb kick. (Colorado 9, Kansas 7).

FOURTH QUARTER

14:30 – Reesing 3 run. Aqib Talib intercepted a Colorado pass and returned it 59 yards, swinging the momentum back to the Jayhawks. Reesing had a 16-yard run to make it goal to go, and on third down ran it up the middle on a draw for the score. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 14, Colorado 9).

7:57 – Derek Fine 5 pass from Reesing. Reesing orchestrated a 53-yard drive thanks in part to a third-down completion to Jeff Foster for 31 yards after he was flushed from the pocket. On third down, Reesing lobbed one to the back corner of the end zone, where Fine hauled it in. Two-point conversion attempt failed. (Kansas 20, Colorado 9).

3:17 – Ryan Walters 95 fumble return. Reesing scrambled 63 yards to set KU up for a game-icing score. But two plays later, Reesing fumbled the ball into the air after getting hit. Walters caught it in stride and rumbled 95 yards for the touchdown, barely outrunning Jon Cornish. Two-point conversion attempt failed. (Kansas 20, Colorado 15).

How they scored

By Staff     Oct 22, 2006

FIRST QUARTER

11:13 – Brandon Whitaker 5 pass from Shawn Bell. Kansas expected the heavy pass and primarily worked with five defensive backs. It didn’t matter: Baylor moved the ball 80 yards on 11 plays, including a 15-yard completion to Dominique Zeigler and a 36-yard pass to Thomas White. On third down and goal to go, Bell found Whitaker in the front of the end zone for the first score of the day. Ryan Havens kick. (Baylor 7, Kansas 0).

7:36 – Kerry Meier 12 run. Kansas countered with an efficient drive that went 78 yards and was prolonged by the run and pass. Jon Cornish had three carries for 38 yards, and passes to Derek Fine and Brian Murph kept the chains moving. On first-and-10 from the 12, Meier was flushed out of the pocket and went up the middle into the end zone. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 7, Baylor 7)

6:45 – Arist Wright 28 interception return. On Baylor’s first play of the new drive, Wright dropped back to assist KU’s five defensive backs and intercepted Bell’s pass up the middle. He sprinted to the left sideline and went in untouched for six. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 14, Baylor 7).

SECOND QUARTER

14:50 – Ryan Havens 42 field goal. Bell orchestrated a 13-play, 56-yard drive with four pass completions. A Jeff Wheeler sack for 15 yards gave Baylor a huge hill for a first down, and it didn’t get it. Havens nailed the field goal on fourth down. (Kansas 14, Baylor 10).

11:23 – Trent Shelton 4 pass from Shawn Bell. With Kansas blitzing heavy on third-and-goal, Bell found Shelton on a wide-receiver screen, and Shelton dashed into the end zone for the score. Ryan Havens kick. (Baylor 17, Kansas 14).

7:34 – Dexton Fields 13 pass from Meier. Cornish ate up a large chunk of the 69-yard drive, breaking off runs of 10 and 31 yards. On third-and-nine, Meier threw a perfect lob pass toward the back-right corner of the end zone, and Fields made a nice over-the-shoulder catch for six. Webb kick. (Kansas 21, Baylor 17).

3:27 – Jon Cornish 15 run. Cornish continued his phenomenal first half, snaking through blockers and defenders on the right side and slipping into the end zone for the score. The play capped a 53-yard drive started when Jake Schermer recovered a Baylor fumble. Webb kick. (Kansas 28, Baylor 17).

:23 – Cornish 1 run. Jonathan Lamb’s 52-yard punt return gave Kansas a shot at points with the clock running down in the first half. Of the seven plays during the 28-yard drive, only one was a pass – Meier spiking it on first down and one yard to go. On the next play, Cornish bulled in for his second touchdown. Webb kick. (Kansas 35, Baylor 17).

THIRD QUARTER

No scoring.

FOURTH QUARTER

9:22 – Shelton 42 pass from Bell. Two big bombs – both to Shelton – ate up the field on Baylor’s quick 80-yard drive. On the second, Bell had plenty of time and moved up toward the line of scrimmage before firing a strike up the middle to Shelton, who was two steps ahead of Justin Thornton. Havens kick. (Kansas 35, Baylor 24).

4:42 – Paul Mosley 4 pass from Bell. A 60-yard pass from Bell to Zeigler set Baylor up to make its run, and on the next play, Bell found Mosley in the end zone for the score. Two-point conversion attempt failed. (Kansas 35, Baylor 30).

1:08 – Zeigler 10 pass from Bell. Baylor got the ball back with 2:43 left, and it was pretty clear what was about to happen. Bell orchestrated a nine-play, 58-yard drive by completing six passes. The last was a screen to Zeigler on the left side, he went behind a blocker and leapt over Anthony Webb and into the end zone for the winner. Two-point conversion attempt failed. (Baylor 36, Kansas 35)

How they scored

By Staff     Oct 15, 2006

FIRST QUARTER

4:19 – Marcus Herford 33 pass from Kerry Meier. A fumble recovery by Anthony Webb set Kansas up to strike first. After a Jon Cornish run for a loss, Meier saw Herford running in a seam up the middle and threw a strike to him. Herford caught it in his fingertips for the score. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 7, Oklahoma State 0).

SECOND QUARTER

14:09 – Derek Fine 4 pass from Meier. Another fumble recovery sparked a scoring drive with a short field. Meier had a hand in every play, completing three passes for 24 yards and running for 14 more. The last was a quick pass to Fine just past the goal line. Webb kick. (Kansas 14, Oklahoma State 0).

THIRD QUARTER

10:46 – Webb 43 field goal. Another Oklahoma State turnover led to points. Bobby Reid fumbled a quarterback sneak, and Kansas answered, going 32 yards on five plays, the biggest a 14-yard reverse by Brian Murph and a 14-yard run by Meier. Webb’s field goal was his longest of the season. (Kansas 17, Oklahoma State 0).

8:19 – Adarius Bowman 54 pass from Reid. Oklahoma State benefited from a solid Parrish Cox kickoff return and two pass completions – the first for 15 yards to Anthony Parks, and the second a 54-yard completion to Bowman, 35 of which came after the catch. Jason Ricks kick (Kansas 17, Oklahoma State 7).

7:17 Reid 29 run. Oklahoma State got the ball right back when it stunned Kansas with a successful onside kick. After two pass completions, Reid ran the option right, slipped into the KU backfield, streaked down the right sideline and bowled through KU defenders the last five yards into the end zone – 1:02 after the Cowboys first reached it. Ricks kick. (Kansas 17, Oklahoma State 14).

4:38 – Bowman 25 pass from Reid. The OSU machine continued its impressive third-quarter spurt. After forcing Kansas to three-and-out, Oklahoma State moved 56 yards on four plays, including a 25-yard run by Dantrell Savage and a 25-yard pass to OSU’s Mr. Reliable, Bowman, who was being covered by KU linebacker Joe Mortensen. Ricks kick. (Oklahoma State 21, Kansas 17).

FOURTH QUARTER

13:38 – Bowman 55 pass from Reid. Have another one, Cowboys: The third play of the fourth quarter was a pump fake that left Bowman wide open between the hash marks. He caught it on the run, kicked right and wasn’t touched for his third score of the game. Ricks kick. (Oklahoma State 28, Kansas 17).

7:46 – Brandon McAnderson 11 run. KU freshman Jake Sharp provided an immediate spark, gaining 27 on a run and 15 on a shovel pass. McAnderson finished the drive, though, bullying up the middle and into the end zone. Meier rolled out right and found Fine on the left side for the two-point conversion. (Oklahoma State 28, Kansas 25).

7:08 – Bowman 64 pass from Reid. Oklahoma State needed just one play to answer KU’s touchdown, and guess who got it? Bowman caught a pass over the middle and slipped behind a wall up the right sideline, going untouched for his fourth touchdown. He hit 300 yards receiving for the game with the catch. Ricks kick. (Oklahoma State 35, Kansas 25).

2:27 – D’Juan Woods 25 pass from Bobby Reid. So they do have other receivers. An eight-play, 58-yard drive paid off when Reid threw a fade pass into the left corner of the end zone that Woods came up with. Ricks kick. (Oklahoma State 42, Kansas 25).

1:22 – Dexton Fields 8 pass from Meier. Kansas answered with a 62-yard drive on five plays, which included two catches by Fine. Fields’ catch in the front of the end zone near the left sideline finished the scoring. Webb kick. (Oklahoma State 42, Kansas 32).

How they scored

By Staff     Oct 8, 2006

FIRST QUARTER

9:14 – Dexton Fields 6 pass from Adam Barmann. Kansas executed a fake punt at the perfect time, with Kyle Tucker underhanding the football to Brandon McAnderson, who was wide open down the left sideline for a 48-yard, drive-prolonging play. Three plays later, Barmann found Fields on the left side for the touchdown. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 7, Texas A&M 0).

:23 – Scott Webb 33 field goal. A Tucker punt pinned inside the A&M led to a quick three-and-out for the handcuffed Aggies. A quick punt out of the end zone was returned to the Aggie 23-yard line by Brian Murph, and despite not getting a first down, KU did get three points. (Kansas 10, Texas A&M 0).

SECOND QUARTER

8:23 – Jorvorskie Lane 2 run. Texas A&M marched downfield on an efficient 12-play, 74-yard drive, blending run and pass well. Close to the goal line, the Aggies gave the ball to Lane, the team’s 274-pound bruiser, for the score. Layne Neumann kick. (Kansas 10, Texas A&M 7).

THIRD QUARTER

11:56 – Webb 36 field goal. Kansas was boosted by a 49-yard run by Jon Cornish up the left sideline, putting the Jayhawks in field-goal range. Kansas couldn’t get another first down, though, and Webb was called in to hit his second field goal. (Kansas 13, Texas A&M 7).

6:39 – Safety, Texas A&M snapped ball out of end zone. A Tucker punt pinned the Aggies at their own five-yard line, and when Texas A&M stalled, it was forced to punt out of its own end zone. Corey Gibas’ snap was high, though, and sailed out of the end zone after hitting Justin Brantly’s hands. (Kansas 15, Texas A&M 7).

3:34 – Webb 28 field goal. Kansas once again relied on Cornish, who had runs of 19, six, 11 and two yards during the 43-yard drive. It stalled inside the red zone once again, and Webb allowed KU to escape with points. (Kansas 18, Texas A&M 7).

FOURTH QUARTER

14:54 – Stephen McGee 2 run. The Aggies ran all over the Jayhawk defense during an 80-yard drive, getting 24- and 25-yard runs from Mike Goodson and a 16-yard scamper by McGee. Two yards out, McGee bootlegged right and found the front corner of the end zone. A two-point conversion attempt failed when McGee was tackled at the two-yard line. (Kansas 18, Texas A&M 13).

:34 – Lane 2 run. Texas A&M orchestrated an 80-yard drive without many problems, mainly through short passing. The killer was a 35-yard screen pass to L’Tydrick Riley that put the Aggies at the five-yard line. Two plays later, Lane rumbled in. McGee found Joey Thomas for the two-point conversion with all the time in the world to throw. (Texas A&M 21, Kansas 18).

FIRST QUARTER

14:02 – Terrence Nunn 75 pass from Zac Taylor. On the second play of the game, Taylor rolled out to the left and found Nunn wide open down the left sideline. Anthony Webb, perhaps thinking Taylor would scramble, was seven yards behind Nunn when the catch was made. Nunn went untouched for six. Jordan Congdon kick. (Nebraska 7, Kansas 0).

10:20 – Todd Peterson 6 pass from Zac Taylor. An Adam Barmann pass was intercepted by Andrew Shanle and returned to the KU six-yard line. On the first play, Taylor rolled right and found Peterson wide open, after Aqib Talib fell to the ground during coverage. Congdon kick. (Nebraska 14, Kansas 0).

:23 – Jordan Congdon 21 field goal. A long drive stalled after Kansas finally was able to stop the run. An Eric Washington near-interception forced fourth down, and Congdon converted on the chip shot. (Nebraska 17, Kansas 0).

SECOND QUARTER

11:45 – Brandon McAnderson 1 run. Adam Barmann finally got going, throwing accurate passes for the first time all game. He found Dexton Fields on completions of 30 and 15 yards, Jon Cornish for an eight-yard gain and Derek Fine in a seam for a 40-yard gain. On first and goal from the one-yard line, McAnderson bulled into the end zone up the gut. Scott Webb kick. (Nebraska 17, Kansas 7).

6:51 – Frantz Hardy 78 pass from Taylor. Another rollout pass burned KU’s secondary. This time, Taylor rolled right and just before hitting the sideline threw a strike to Hardy going left to right. Hardy went around the edge and easily ran right around a slower Sadiq Muhammed and into the end zone. Congdon kick. (Nebraska 24, Kansas 7).

:00 – Scott Webb 31 field goal. Kansas drove 56 yards on 12 plays, mainly by passing the ball. Barmann found Dexton Fields twice for 29 yards and Derek Fine for an 18-yard gain, but Kansas failed to get in the end zone. Webb booted it through despite a high snap. (Nebraska 24, Kansas 10).

THIRD QUARTER

12:01 – Cornish 8 run. Kansas gave itself great field position when defensive end Russell Brorsen forced a fumble that Joe Mortensen pounced on at the NU eight-yard line. The next play, Barmann optioned right to Cornish, who went into the corner of the end zone untouched. A bad snap made Kansas unable to get a kick off. (Nebraska 24, Kansas 16).

5:47 – Webb 35 field goal. After a forced fumble by Joe Mortensen, Kansas drove into field-goal range thanks in part to clutch receptions by Dexton Fields. Barmann threw two incompletions to force fourth down, and Webb booted the field goal through. (Nebraska 24, Kansas 19).

FOURTH QUARTER

6:47 – Derek Fine 1 pass from Adam Barmann. Kansas moved 88 yards on 12 plays, the big boost a 46-yard deep ball from Barmann to Brian Murph. After two runs couldn’t get Kansas in the end zone, Barmann play-actioned and found Fine on the right for the score. Barmann was sacked on the two-point conversion. (Kansas 25, Nebraska 24).

4:13 – Frantz Hardy 75 pass from Zac Taylor. Facing third-and-long deep in its own territory, Taylor threw a deep ball to Hardy, who was being covered by Blake Bueltel. Bueltel appeared to get disoriented, and Hardy hauled it in and ran right by him for the score. Taylor found Nate Swift at the goal line to convert the two-point play. (Nebraska 32, Kansas 25).

:46 – Brian Murph 26 pass from Adam Barmann. Kansas marched downfield yet again with inspiring perseverance. An 11-play, 81-yard drive finished when Barmann swung out right, then found Murph over the middle about 10 yards downfield. Murph went right to left into the corner of the end zone for the score. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 32, Nebraska 32).

OVERTIME

Cody Glenn 1 run. Zac Taylor hit Nate Swift on the left side for a 21-yard reception, putting the Huskers at the one-yard line. Glenn ran it in on the next play to the left side. Congdon kick. (Nebraska 39, Kansas 32).

How they scored

FIRST QUARTER

No scoring.

SECOND QUARTER

No scoring.

THIRD QUARTER

9:15 – Scott Webb 37 field goal. A 12-play, 60-yard drive went as many of KU’s drives did Saturday – through the air. Adam Barmann completed passes of 15, 31 and 19 yards to three different receivers. A Jon Cornish 16-yard touchdown run was called back because of a holding penalty, but Kansas did eventually score with Webb’s first field goal of the season. (Kansas 3, South Florida 0).

3:07 – Matt Grothe 7 run. Grothe and the Bulls chipped away at field position after Ean Randolph returned a kickoff to midfield. Grothe had a hand in most of the 13 plays, including the final scamper up the gut that resulted in six. Mike Benzer kick. (South Florida 7, Kansas 3).

FOURTH QUARTER

14:55 – Jon Cornish 2 run. Barmann led a seven-play, 79-yard drive that was prolonged with a 29-yard completion to Brian Murph on third down. A pass-interference penalty put Kansas inside the five, and on third down, Barmann optioned to Cornish, who hit the end zone and bulled over USF’s Mike Jenkins at the goal line. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 10, South Florida 7).

9:01 – Scott Webb 42 field goal. Jon Cornish broke free on a 35-yard gain that accounted for a large chunk of KU’s drive. A nine-yard run on third down wasn’t enough to move the sticks, but did put the Jayhawks in Webb’s range for the junior’s second field goal of the night. (Kansas 13, South Florida 7).

FIRST QUARTER

12:01 – Kerry Meier 12 run. Kansas needed just a 99-second drive to get its first score. KU gained no yards on the first two plays but then delivered three-straight blows – a 19-yard reception by Derek Fine, a 14-yard run by Meier and a 12-yard score by Meier on a simple quarterback draw play to the right side. Jon Cornish delivered the lead block. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 7, Toledo 0).

8:03 – Safety, Jon Cornish tackled in end zone. On 3rd-and-11, Meier dropped back and avoided a hit by Toledo linebacker Mike Alston. Alston, however, knocked the football out of Meier’s hands. Cornish picked up the loose ball but was unable to get out of the end zone before Alston tackled him for the safety. (Kansas 7, Toledo 2).

SECOND QUARTER

10:20 – Jalen Parmele 1 run. Toledo slowly progressed down the field during a 13-play, 69-yard drive, getting help from a Brandon Duncan late-hit penalty. Parmele ran the ball for Toledo’s last four plays, the last a run off left tackle that got him in. Alex Steigerwald kick. (Toledo 9, Kansas 7).

6:44 – Brandon McAnderson 2 run. Kansas benefited from great running by Jon Cornish during a 74-yard drive. Cornish had runs of 17, 9 and 33 yards, and caught a shovel pass that went for 18. McAnderson finished the drive, though, rumbling up the middle for the score. Scott Webb kick (Kansas 14, Toledo 9).

:51 – Stephen Williams 37 pass from Clint Cochran. The Rockets were facing 4th-and-15 near the end of the first half and decided to take a stab at the end zone. With decent coverage by Blake Bueltel and Justin Thornton coming over to help out, Williams still managed to come down with the jump ball in the left side of the end zone. Cochran found Nick Moore in the end zone for the two-point conversion. (Toledo 17, Kansas 14).

THIRD QUARTER

8:15 – Safety, Brandon Summers sacked in end zone. A Kyle Tucker punt pinned Toledo at its own 2-yard line. An incomplete pass and a 1-yard run forced Toledo into a passing situation, but Summers was flushed out and scrambled left. John Larson wrapped his ankles and brought him down in the end zone for the safety. (Toledo 17, Kansas 16).

4:26 – Marcus Henry 33 pass from Kerry Meier. After Kansas sputtered through multiple offensive drives, Meier and the passing game got it going again. An 11-yard pass to Brian Murph gave KU a first down, and Murph found Henry open in the end zone for the touchdown. The throw was low, but Henry caught the ball from his belly extremely close to the ground. A review of the play didn’t overturn it. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 23, Toledo 17).

FOURTH QUARTER

11:49 – Richard Davis 1 run. Kerry Meier’s pass glanced off Marcus Henry’s hands and was intercepted, setting up a short field for Toledo at KU’s 8-yard line. Four straight runs by Davis – for 3, 3, 1 and 1 yards – got the six points. On fourth down, Eric Washington wrapped up Davis from behind, but Davis fell into the end zone. Alex Steigerwald kick plunked off left upright and went through. (Toledo 24, Kansas 23).

7:19 – Barry Church 84 interception return. Kansas moved the ball downfield with three straight first downs. By this point in field-goal range, Meier dropped back and looked for Derek Fine in the flat on third down. Church jumped in front of it, picked it and ran in untouched, with nobody near him. Alex Steigenwald kick. (Toledo 31, Kansas 23).

3:55 – Dexton Fields 20 pass from Kerry Meier. Meier passed the Jayhawks back in the game after his devastating mistake during the previous drive. A nine-play, 69-yard drive was done mostly through passing, with completions thrown toward Marcus Herford, Marcus Henry, Derek Fine and Fields. The last was a wide-receiver screen that Fields was able to scramble into the end zone with. Meier kept an option and leaped over the goal line for a two-point, game-tying conversion. (Kansas 31, Toledo 31).

SECOND OVERTIME

Jalen Parmele 25 run. After Kerry Meier threw an interception when KU was on offense in the second overtime, Parmele took the first handoff, broke tackles and scrambled right into the end zone for the game winner. (Toledo 37, Kansas 31).

FIRST QUARTER

6:22 – Dexton Fields 11 pass from Kerry Meier. KU orchestrated an 80-yard drive thanks to Meier’s arm and Jon Cornish’s legs. Cornish rushed for 28 yards on four carries, while Meier started the drive with a nice 29-yard completion to Marcus Herford. The last play was a slant route over the middle, with Fields making a nice catch in the end zone. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 7, Louisiana-Monroe 0).

2:02 – Zeek Zacharie 59 pass from Kinsmon Lancaster. Kansas had ULM facing a third-and-seven situation at the Warhawk 41-yard line, but Lancaster threw a strike to Zacharie, who shed cornerback Raymond Brown and ran down the right sideline untouched. Ragan Walters kick. (Kansas 7, Louisiana-Monroe 7).

SECOND QUARTER

1:02 – Marcus Henry 3 pass from Kerry Meier. A 46-yard screen pass from Meier to Cornish kick-started a 13-play, 80-yard drive. It appeared to stall with goal-to-go, but after a timeout, Meier found Henry, who made a nice grab on the high pass for the score. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 14, Louisiana-Monroe 7).

THIRD QUARTER

9:23 – Kerry Meier 10 run. Kansas finally showed clout on offense, moving 80 yards in just eight plays for the score. Cornish had a juking-and-jiving pickup of 22 yards to put Kansas in striking distance, and Meier found an open hole on the left side and sprinted in untouched. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 21, Louisiana-Monroe 7).

1:18 – Kinsmon Lancaster 9 run. Monroe jumped right back into the game, thanks to a 55-yard bomb from Lancaster to Joe Merritt, which put ULM inside the five-yard line. After a four-yard loss, Lancaster scooted in up the middle for six. Ragan Walters kick sailed wide right. (Kansas 21, Louisiana-Monroe 13).

FOURTH QUARTER

3:31 – Zacharie 3 pass from Lancaster. Lancaster used his arm to move ULM down the field on an 81-yard drive. Completions of 28 and 33 yards stunned the KU faithful, and a quick slant to Zacharie gave ULM its third touchdown. A false-start penalty moved ULM’s two-point conversion try to the seven-yard line, and Lancaster’s pass fell incomplete. (Kansas 21, Louisiana-Monroe 19).

FIRST QUARTER

9:36 – Robert Weeks 30 field goal. Northwestern State had great field position after a botch snap led to a partially blocked punt by Kyle Tucker. A six-play, 16-yard drive was enough to get the Demons in field goal position, and Weeks’ attempt doinked off the left upright and went through. (Northwestern State 3, Kansas 0).

6:31 – Robert Weeks 31 field goal. Another special-teams blunder by KU – this time a dropped snap – gave the Demons great field position again. NSU gained no yards on offense, but was close enough for an easy field goal anyway. (Northwestern State 6, Kansas 0).

4:32 – Marcus Henry 10 pass from Kerry Meier. Marcus Herford returned the ensuing kickoff 88 yards to the NSU seven-yard line, setting up an easy drive that didn’t come easily. Runs by Jon Cornish and Kerry Meier went for a total loss of three yards, before Meier found Henry in the corner of the end zone for the score. Scott Webb kick (Kansas 7, Northwestern State 6).

1:41 – Brian Murph 70 punt return. After a three-and-out by NSU, Murph fielded a punt at KU’s 30 and appeared doomed among a wall of players in the middle of the field. He squeaked out of the traffic jam, darted to the left sideline, broke a tackle and ran the distance for an impressive touchdown. Scott Webb kick (Kansas 14, Northwestern State 6).

SECOND QUARTER

8:20 – Jeff Foster recovered block punt in end zone. After a pressured Meier threw an interception in the red zone, NSU was three-and-out and lined up to punt from its own end zone. The low snap and heavy pressure doomed the Demons, and Dexton Fields got a clean block. Jeff Foster fell on the loose ball in the end zone. Scott Webb kick (Kansas 21, Northwestern State 6).

6:52 – Brian Murph 15 pass from Kerry Meier. A fumble recovery by Eric Washington gave the Jayhawks a short field to work with, and KU made short work of it. On the first play on offense, Meier found a wide-open Murph in the left side of the end zone and threw a perfect lob pass to him. Scott Webb kick (Kansas 28, Northwestern State 6).

THIRD QUARTER

10:34 – Robert Weeks 36 field goal. Northwestern State slowly sustained a drive that put the Demons in field-goal range. After strong KU defensive pressure stalled the drive, Weeks nailed the field goal. (Kansas 28, Northwestern State 9).

10:02 – Jon Cornish 69 run. KU’s first play on the ensuing drive was a handoff to Cornish, who went off right tackle, broke free to the outside and streaked down the NSU sideline, outrunning all of the Demon defenders for the score. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 35, Northwestern State 9).

1:23 – Robert Weeks 36 field goal. NSU benefited from a favorable bounce from Kyle Tucker’s punt and needed to go only 23 yards on seven plays to get three more points. Weeks set a school record with his fourth field goal of the game. (Kansas 35, Northwestern State 12).

FOURTH QUARTER

12:47 – Kerry Meier 1 run. KU sustained an eight-play, 74-yard drive, mainly on the ground. A 33-yard run by Jon Cornish put Kansas in the red zone, and back-to-back runs by Meier of 10 and one yards gave the Jayhawks the score. Scott Webb kick (Kansas 42, Northwestern State 12).

6:39 – Ben Bailey 3 pass from Ricky Joe Meeks. A 12-play, 80-yard drive helped by penalties and clutch passing finished with a short pass in the end zone for six. Meeks’ attempt at a two-point conversion fell incomplete in tight coverage. (Kansas 42, Northwestern State 18).

3:46 – Kerry Meier 31 run. A seven-play, 74-yard drive ended in impressive fashion, when Meier faked a handoff to Sharp, ran around the left edge, up the left sideline and into the end zone with a leap. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 49, Northwestern State 18).

How they scored

By Staff     Dec 24, 2005

FIRST QUARTER

10:26 — Brian Murph 85 punt return. Houston running back Ryan Gilbert was stuffed on two consecutive carries, forcing Houston to punt. A 57-yard kick was dropped by Murph, but the junior scooped it up and sprinted to the left sideline. He picked up a few blocks there, then cut back inside at around midfield and ran to the end zone on the right side untouched. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 7, Houston 0).

SECOND QUARTER

14:22 — Ben Bell 32 field goal. The Cougars sustained a 17-play drive that started on their own 20, finding most of their success through innovative pass plays. Three consecutive incompletions stalled the drive, though, forcing Houston to boot a field goal to get on the board. (Kansas 7, Houston 3).

12:49 — Jon Cornish 13 pass from Jason Swanson. Kansas needed just five plays to move 60 yards, getting completions to Mark Simmons, Charles Gordon and Cornish. Cornish’s reception was on a shovel pass, and the speedy junior raced around the outside and scored. Webb kick. (Kansas 14, Houston 3).

:57 — Kevin Kolb 1 run. Houston recovered a Swanson fumble and ran it to the KU 42-yard line. From there, the Cougars went 42 yards on seven plays, the last a quarterback sneak by Kolb that was signaled a touchdown. Officials reviewed the play but couldn’t find indisputable evidence to reverse it. Ben Bell kick. (Kansas 14, Houston 10)

THIRD QUARTER

12:43 — Cornish 30 pass from Swanson. On the second play of the short-field drive, Swanson completed another shovel pass to Cornish. The junior running back was flat-footed when he caught it, but recovered his momentum, broke a tackle and ran through a seam for six. Webb kick. (Kansas 21, Houston 10).

8:29 — T.J. Lawrence 44 field goal. Kolb completed passes of 36 and 18 yards to move Houston into field-goal range, but incompletions and immense pressure from KU’s pass rushers forced the drive to stall. (Kansas 21, Houston 13).

4:57 — Mark Simmons 32 pass from Swanson. Houston blitzed aggressively on a second-down play from the 32-yard line, and Swanson threw the ball up the middle just before getting hit. Simmons snagged it and ran between the hashes for the touchdown. Webb kick. (Kansas 28, Houston 13).

FOURTH QUARTER

12:23 — Charlton Keith 14 interception return. KU’s athletic defensive end made a beautiful play on a throw in the flat, reaching behind him as he was rushing the quarterback and snagging a pass in mid-air. He then dove into the end zone as he was being hit for the acrobatic touchdown. Webb kick. (Kansas 35, Houston 13).

9:08 — Murph 48 pass from Swanson. Swanson called an audible at the line of scrimmage and, under pressure from pass-rushers, threw a beautiful pass to Murph, who was five yards ahead of his defender. Murph scooted in untouched. Webb kick. (Kansas 42, Houston 13).

How they scored

By Staff     Nov 27, 2005

FIRST QUARTER

5:04 – Scott Webb 48 field goal. A 14-play, 56-yard drive moved thanks to three third-down conversions, taking KU into the outskirts of field-goal range. The drive stalled, but with the wind aiding Webb, the sophomore easily booted the career-long field goal to draw first blood. (Kansas 3, Iowa State 0).

:44 – Jon Davis 4 pass from Bret Meyer. A backbreaking 42-yard completion from Meyer to Austin Flynn moved ISU to the Kansas 11-yard line. From there, it took the Cyclones three plays before Meyer found Davis in the corner of the end zone for 6. Bret Culbertson kick. (Iowa State 7, Kansas 3).

SECOND QUARTER

10:10 – Todd Blythe 27 pass from Bret Meyer. ISU took to the air often on its next offensive drive, going to Blythe three times in a nine-play drive. The last play found Blythe over the middle a step ahead of Charles Gordon, and the ISU sophomore walked in untouched. Culbertson kick. (Iowa State 14, Kansas 3).

THIRD QUARTER

5:58 – Scott Webb 33 field goal. Kansas moved the ball 64 yards after getting the football back off a punt. Kansas converted first downs on pass plays of 17 and 16 yards, but couldn’t move the ball closer than the 16-yard line. Webb booted the field goal with the wind at his back. (Iowa State 14, Kansas 6).

FOURTH QUARTER

11:28 – Brian Luke 1 run. A Jason Swanson completion to Derek Fine put KU 10 yards from the end zone, but Swanson appeared to injure his left knee on the play and was taken out. Luke came in, ran twice for seven yards, then handed off to Clark Green for two yards. On fourth down, Luke tried a sneak, and after an instant-replay review, it was determined he barely crossed the goal line. Luke pass to Fine for the two-point conversion. (Kansas 14, Iowa State 14).

8:41 – Ryan Kock 1 run. ISU marched right downfield on the ensuing drive, benefiting from a Nick Reid late-hit penalty on Meyer. Meyer completed a 38-yard pass to Blythe on the next play, and the Cyclones were within striking distance. A nine-play drive was finished off by Kock bullying up the middle for the score. Culbertson kick. (Iowa State 21, Kansas 14).

1:05 – Dexton Fields 15 pass from Luke. Luke moved 58 yards in 44 seconds, completing all four of his passes. On third down, Luke found Marcus Henry for a 35-yard gain, and Luke then found Fields between the hash marks for the touchdown on the next play. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 21, Iowa State 21).

OVERTIME

KU – Scott Webb 34 field goal. After ISU’s Culbertson missed his overtime field-goal attempt, KU knew it only needed three and ran its offense conservatively. Three runs gained eight yards before Webb booted his attempt through with no problems. Webb’s teammates and fellow students mobbed him on the field after the referee’s signal. (Kansas 24, Iowa State 21).

How they scored

By Staff     Nov 13, 2005

FIRST QUARTER

7:53 – Limas Sweed 45 pass from Vince Young. Two runs totaling 20 yards by Ramonce Taylor started the drive, and a well-executed play-action ended it. Young dropped back after faking the handoff and threw a jump ball toward the end zone. KU corner Theo Baines covered it well, but Sweed’s height advantage allowed him to pull the ball down. David Pino kick. (Texas 7, Kansas 0).

7:40 – Jamaal Charles 10 run. Greg Heaggans never gained control of the ensuing kickoff and bobbled it away right into the hands of UT’s Robert Killebrew. On the very next play, Charles bruised his way to the end zone, fending off several Jayhawks on the way. Pino kick. (Texas 14, Kansas 0).

5:49 – Quan Cosby 64 pass from Vince Young. Charlton Keith started the drive stopping Ramonce Taylor for a five-yard loss, but pass completions of 32 and 64 yards gobbled up all the real estate. The second, while being interfered by Rodney Fowler, was caught by Cosby, who broke away and danced into the end zone. Pino kick. (Texas 21, Kansas 0).

2:29 – Aaron Ross 71 punt return. A Kyle Tucker punt was returned for minimal gain, but KU was called for holding and had to punt again. This time, Tucker booted one 55 yards, but Ross weaved his way upfield between the hash marks before finally breaking to the left and sprinting in nearly untouched. Pino kick. (Texas 28, Kansas 0).

SECOND QUARTER

12:13 – Ramonce Taylor 8 run. Texas again had an easy time moving the football, picking up 87 yards in nine plays, mostly by running the ball. A pass-interference penalty on Aqib Talib put Texas inside the 10, and Taylor changed directions and rumbled in on the right side for six. Pino kick. (Texas 35, Kansas 0).

10:19 – David Thomas 29 pass from Vince Young. Texas started on KU’s side of the field and needed just three plays – a two-yard scamper by Vince Young, a 16-yard run by Selvin Young and a 29-yard touchdown pass from Young to Thomas, who broke a tackle and rolled in. Pino kick. (Texas 42, Kansas 0).

4:13 – Peter Ullman 3 pass from Vince Young. The short field was the only thing stopping a long Texas drive. Aaron Ross intercepted a Jason Swanson pass and returned it to the 3-yard line. On UT’s first play on offense, Young bootlegged right and found Ullman in the back of the end zone. Pino kick. (Texas 49, Kansas 0).

:55 – David Pino 35 field goal. Texas almost coughed the ball up when Vince Young fumbled and lost 16 yards. Texas stayed in field-goal range, though, and Pino booted it through to give Texas 52 points before halftime. (Texas 52, Kansas 0).

THIRD QUARTER

14:14 – Jon Cornish 59 run. The second play of the second half was the first positive sign for KU all day. Cornish took a handoff, ran left of the line and up the field, where a seam allowed him to sprint free for the score up the left side. Scott Webb kick. (Texas 52, Kansas 7).

6:41 – Taylor 12 run. Texas started eating clock on its first possession of the second half, choosing to run the ball for most of it. Six first downs and 80 yards later, Taylor ran into the right side of the end zone for the score. Pino kick. (Texas 59, Kansas 7).

3:34 – Brandon McAnderson 15 run. KU had prime field position thanks to a Kevin Kane interception of backup quarterback Matt Nordgren’s pass. Clark Green had a 13-yard gain, then McAnderson sprinted in from 15 out for KU’s second score. Webb kick. (Texas 59, Kansas 14).

FOURTH QUARTER

14:53 – Selvin Young 21 run. Texas stopped passing altogether, but it didn’t stop the Horns from moving the ball. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Young ran through a seam on the left side and scored untouched. Pino kick. (Texas 66, Kansas 14).

How they scored

By Staff     Nov 6, 2005

FIRST QUARTER

10:45 — Mark Simmons 40 pass from Jason Swanson. Facing third down and 10 yards to go, Swanson found Simmons going right to left across the middle of the field. Simmons caught it, broke right and found nobody in his way en route to the end zone. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 7, Nebraska 0).

7:05 — Safety, Jason Swanson sacked in end zone. A Nebraska punt was downed at the three-yard line, and after Clark Green ran for a loss of a yard, KU tried a play-action. The heavy Nebraska blitz was all over Swanson, who was sacked in the end zone. (Kansas 7, Nebraska 2).

1:16 — Darren Rus 20 blocked punt return. KU forced a three-and-out late in the first quarter. Ronnie Amadi slipped through the middle of the line and blocked the kick, which deflected to Amadi’s right. Rus caught it in midair and ran in untouched. Webb kick. (Kansas 14, Nebraska 2).

SECOND QUARTER

4:46 — Scott Webb 21 field goal. The Jayhawks ate six minutes of clock during a 13-play drive, in which they amassed 73 yards passing and running. A 30-yard shovel pass to Clark Green on third down put the Jayhawks in NU territory, and a 17-yard run by Jon Cornish made it goal to go, but KU couldn’t score from five yards out. (Kansas 17, Nebraska 2).

1:47 — Terrence Nunn 30 pass from Zac Taylor. A six-play, 64-yard drive was plagued with coverage breakdowns, leading to a third-down conversion to Grant Mulkey and a 30-yard strike to Nunn, who was wide-open and ran in the left side of the end zone. Jordan Congdon kick. (Kansas 17, Nebraska 9).

THIRD QUARTER

6:19 — Cory Ross 1 run. A Mark Simmons fumble gave Nebraska the ball inside the red zone, and the Huskers needed four plays to move 16 yards into the end zone. The two-point conversion failed when James McClinton intercepted the pass. (Kansas 17, Nebraska 15).

5:35 — Jon Cornish 72 run. Cornish ran for eight yards before he took a draw play up the gut on second down from the 28. Cornish ran cleanly through a seam and was touched just once on his way to the end zone. Webb kick. (Kansas 24, Nebraska 15).

FOURTH QUARTER

14:45 — Safety, Zac Taylor sacked in end zone. Kyle Tucker had a beautiful punt go out of bounds at the five-yard line, and a false-start penalty pinned NU to the two. On the next play, Eric Butler broke through and sacked Taylor for the safety. (Kansas 26, Nebraska 15).

8:33 — Mark Simmons 12 pass from Jason Swanson. KU marched downfield during a six-minute drive, prolonging the session thanks to a 37-yard completion to Simmons on third down. On third-and-goal, Simmons made a diving catch on a lob pass in the left side of the end zone. Webb kick. (Kansas 33, Nebraska 15).

5:23 — Kevin Kane 40 interception return. Pass-rusher Brandon Perkins entered and gave Zac Taylor immense pressure from the right side. Taylor threw as he was getting hit right to Kane, who rumbled up the left sideline for the score. Perkins’ block of Cory Ross allowed Kane to fly untouched. Webb kick. (Kansas 40, Nebraska 15).

How they scored

By Staff     Oct 30, 2005

FIRST QUARTER

5:55 – Adam Crossett 39 field goal. Missouri started the drive in Kansas territory after a Jason Swanson fumble and really had just one productive play – an 18-yard reception by Martin Rucker on third down. After missing his first field goal, Crossett nailed his second. (Missouri 3, Kansas 0).

SECOND QUARTER

6:05 – Clark Green 1 run. Kansas benefited from runs of nine and 16 yards by Green, boosted by a facemask penalty. KU converted two third downs on the drive, the second a one-yard run up the gut by Green for six. Scott Webb kick blocked. (Kansas 6, Missouri 3).

THIRD QUARTER

No scoring.

FOURTH QUARTER

12:59 – Jon Cornish 10 run. After Aqib Talib forced a turnover by snatching an option pitch from Brad Smith, KU moved 42 yards on six plays, all runs. Cornish had 22 yards on the last two plays, the second getting into the end zone behind the blocking of Cesar Rodriguez and Charles Gordon. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 13, Missouri 3).

How they scored

By Staff     Oct 23, 2005

FIRST QUARTER

9:35 – Quinn Sypniewski 20 pass from Joel Klatt. After a fourth-down conversion failed when Brian Luke was sacked, Colorado took over with a short field and needed just three plays to reach the end zone. On second down, Klatt found Sypniewski wide open on the left side thanks to mixed up coverage, and Sypniewski walked in for six. Mason Crosby kick (Colorado 7, Kansas 0).

8:12 – Colorado safety. Kansas was three-and-out again, after Luke was sacked on third down to pin the Jayhawks deep. A bad snap on the punt was mishandled by Tucker, and rather than risk getting tackled in the end zone and fumbling, Tucker threw the ball out of the back of the end zone. (Colorado 9, Kansas 0).

3:07 – Scott Webb 25 field goal. Jason Swanson’s first action of the season at quarterback produced a 9-play, 75-yard drive all the way down to the CU eight. The big play was a 40-yard completion on a deep ball to Charles Gordon, but the drive stalled after that, and Webb booted the field goal. (Colorado 9, Kansas 3).

SECOND QUARTER

14:06 – Joe Klopfenstein 40 pass from Joel Klatt. KU again failed to pick up the tight end in pass coverage, and Klopfenstein was wide open for the pass reception. Klopfenstein bulled over Rodney Fowler to break the tackle and scooted into the end zone for the score. Mason Crosby kick. (Colorado 16, Kansas 3).

8:14 – Scott Webb 28 field goal. Colorado’s discipline problems helped KU drive downfield. Three CU penalties resulted in 33 yards of free field, but Kansas couldn’t get any closer than 11 yards away. A Jason Swanson pass to Charles Gordon in the end zone was overthrown, so Webb had to finish the drive with the field goal. (Colorado 16, Kansas 6).

1:44 – Charles Gordon 7 pass from Jason Swanson. Swanson looked sharp leading Kansas on a 46-yard, 12-play drive. He completed five passes in eight attempts, converting all four third-down plays. The same play Swanson failed to connect with Gordon on the last scoring drive was on target this time, and Gordon made an over-the-shoulder diving catch for six. Scott Webb kick. (Colorado 16, Kansas 13).

THIRD QUARTER

12:03 – Dominique Brooks 28 blocked punt return. KU moved just one yard on a three-and-out, and a heavy CU blitz on the punt was successful, as Brendan Schaub blocked the punt, Brooks scooped it up at the 28 and ran in untouched. Mason Crosby kick. (Colorado 23, Kansas 13).

6:47 – Joe Klopfenstein 3 pass from Joel Klatt. Colorado appeared ready for a 41-yard field goal by Mason Crosby, but a fake was called instead, and holder Nick Holz ran 21 yards for the first down. On the next play, Klatt found Klopfenstein open for the score. Crosby kick. (Colorado 30, Kansas 13).

FOURTH QUARTER

13:36 – Dusty Sprague 62 pass from Joel Klatt. Hugh Charles kept the drive alive on third down, scampering for a 27-yard run on third-and-nine. On the next play, Klatt found Sprague two steps ahead and streaking right to left, hit him with a strike and watched as Sprague sprinted in untouched. Mason Crosby kick. (Colorado 37, Kansas 13).

9:40 – Stephone Robinson 81 punt return. KU managed just one first down on a five-play drive, forcing Kyle Tucker to punt. The punt was decent, but Robinson found several holes, picked up several blocks and used a burst of speed to sprint into the end zone. Mason Crosby kick. (Colorado 44, Kansas 13).

How they scored

By Staff     Oct 16, 2005

FIRST QUARTER

13:33 – D.J. Wolfe 65 interception return. Kansas advanced 25 yards on the first two plays of the game, on a Derek Fine completion and Brian Luke run. On the third play, Luke’s ankle was wrapped up by an OU lineman, and the quarterback tried to make an off-balanced completion anyway. It was intercepted, taken across the field and returned for the score. Garrett Hartley kick. (Oklahoma 7, Kansas 0).

9:58 – Garrett Hartley 40 field goal. Luke’s second interception in a span of nine seconds gave OU great field position, and the Sooners ate up enough field to get in field-goal range. Hartley booted the 40-yarder with plenty of leg. (Oklahoma 10, Kansas 0).

1:06 – Scott Webb 32 field goal. Kansas finally held on to the ball, moving 49 yards on five plays before the drive stalled. Brandon McAnderson had a 15-yard run, and Luke found Mark Simmons for a 20-yard completion on third down. After the drive stalled, Webb booted it through the uprights. (Oklahoma 10, Kansas 3).

FOURTH QUARTER

10:17 – Malcolm Kelly 25 pass from Rhett Bomar. Oklahoma hit the air for a majority of its 92-yard drive. A third down conversion of 40 yards put the Sooners within striking distance. On another third down, Bomar found Kelly in single coverage against Ronnie Amadi. Amadi appeared to stop covering Kelly five yards short of the end zone, and Kelly caught the ball in the corner of the end zone for six. Kick failed. (Oklahoma 16, Kansas 3).

4:01 – Garrett Hartley 40 field goal. A worn-out Kansas defense was battered for another fourth-quarter drive, as Oklahoma slowly moved the ball downfield. After stalling, Hartley booted the 40-yard field goal with plenty of leg. (Oklahoma 19, Kansas 3).

FIRST QUARTER

No scoring.

SECOND QUARTER

3:48 – Scott Webb 28 field goal. A play-action pass to Mark Simmons resulted in a 50-yard gain, moving KU into prime field position. The drive failed to move enough after that, forcing Webb to kick the first points of the game. (Kansas 3, Kansas State 0).

THIRD QUARTER

10:54 – Jeff Snodgrass 38 field goal. A four-play, minus-seven yard drive almost put the Wildcats out of field-goal range after KSU recovered a fumble just 14 yards from the end zone. Runs for losses of four, one and two yards made Snodgrass’s boot a little farther, but he still nailed it. (Kansas 3, Kansas State 3).

FOURTH QUARTER

14:55 – Jordy Nelson 8 pass from Allan Evridge. K-State moved the ball downfield effectively for the first time all game, going 75 yards mainly through the air. A 15-yard facemask penalty on Tim Allen propelled KSU even further, and once inside the 10, Evridge floated one to Nelson, who dove in on the right side for six. Snodgrass kick. (Kansas State 10, Kansas 3).

3:39 – Kansas State safety. After a KU player ran into Charles Gordon as he was attempting to fair-catch a punt, the ball rolled to the one-yard line before KSU downed it. After a one-yard sneak and incomplete pass, Luke was knocked off balance by Tearrius George, and fell down in the end zone for the sack. (Kansas State 12, Kansas 3).

FIRST QUARTER

11:12 – Jarrett Hicks 4 pass from Cody Hodges – Texas Tech moved downfield on the opening drive seemingly at will. A 12-play, 80-yard drive moved nowhere but forward save two incompletions. Facing second-and-goal, Hodges found Hicks on a slant route in the middle of the end zone for six. Alex Trlica kick. (Texas Tech 7, Kansas 0).

SECOND QUARTER

10:52 – Alex Trlica 41 field goal. A questionable unnecessary-roughness penalty on Jerome Kemp boosted Tech’s first drive of the second quarter, and the Red Raiders moved downfield into the red zone. On 3rd-and-1, Nick Reid tackled Danny Amendola for a six-yard loss, forcing Tech to boot the field goal. (Texas Tech 10, Kansas 0).

10:48 – John Saldi fumble recovery in end zone. KU’s drive started at the 20, but a delay-of-game penalty followed by a false start put KU on the 10. On the first play, Luke tried to option left to Clark Green, but the pitch was off-target. Saldi fell on the football in the end zone. Trlico kick. (Texas Tech 17, Kansas 0).

:28 – Alex Trlica 39 field goal. Two consecutive sacks by Brandon Perkins and Charlton Keith put Tech at third-and-31, but Tech remarkably completed a 45-yard pass to prolong the left-for-dead drive. Tech didn’t move the ball much further. (Texas Tech 20, Kansas 0).

THIRD QUARTER

12:52 – Jon Cornish 11 run. Cody Hodges coughed up the football without contact, and Kansas was in great field position after Charlton Keith picked it up and ran to the 11-yard line. On the first play from scrimmage, Cornish ran into a logjam at the line of scrimmage, and slipped through to score the touchdown. Scott Webb kick. (Texas Tech 20, Kansas 7).

10:20 – Cody Hodges 5 run. Tech plugged away on its next drive, completing passes of 5, 10 and 12 yards before a Danny Amendola completion put the Red Raiders five yards from the end zone. Hodges was flushed out of the pocket and dove to the near pylon on the left side for six. Trlica kick. (Texas Tech 27, Kansas 7).

1:13 – Mark Simmons 17 pass from Brian Luke. KU finally got its passing game in gear, driving 73 yards on seven plays mainly through the air. Luke and Simmons found each other three times, including a TD-scoring pass in the back of the end zone up the middle. Webb kick (Texas Tech 27, Kansas 14).

FOURTH QUARTER

14:45 – Scott Webb 27 field goal. Charles Gordon forced Hodges to fumble in Texas Tech territory, and Eric Butler recovered on the 38-yard line. A long run by Cornish put the Jayhawks within striking distance. (Texas Tech 27, Kansas 17).

4:44 – Alex Trlica 46 field goal. Texas Tech appeared ready to ice the game with a late touchdown, but an unsportsmanlike-conduct penalty moved Tech out of the red zone. Trlica connected on his career-long attempt with plenty of leg. (Texas Tech 30, Kansas 17).

How they scored

By Staff     Sep 18, 2005

FIRST QUARTER

:48 – Charles Gordon 14 pass from Brian Luke. An excellent punt by Kyle Tucker pinned Louisiana Tech inside its own one-yard line, and after three plays, the Bulldogs were forced to punt, only managing a 27-yard quick kick. Luke found Brian Murph for a 13-yard gain, and on the next play Luke found Gordon on a swing pass out of the slot position, and after avoiding one Bulldog, Gordon scooted in for six. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 7, Louisiana Tech 0).

SECOND QUARTER

7:24 – Anthony Harrison 3 pass from Matt Kubik. The Bulldogs orchestrated an 11-play, 78-yard drive with positive yardage on every play. An 11-yard scramble by Kubik put Tech within three, and a play-action pass to Harrison put Tech on the board. Danny Horwedel kick. (Kansas 7, Louisiana Tech 7).

THIRD QUARTER

6:33 – Derek Fine 4 pass from Brian Luke. With the run game continuing to sputter, KU took to the air. Luke found Mark Simmons for completions of 28 and 23 yards, and once in the red zone, Luke found Fine in the right side of the end zone for the score. Webb kick. (Kansas 14, Louisiana Tech 7).

FOURTH QUARTER

14:03 – Brian Murph 6 pass from Brian Luke. A Theo Baines interception, coupled with a Louisiana Tech penalty after the play, started the Jayhawks’ lightning-quick drive just seven yards from the end zone. After a one-yard gain by Clark Green, Luke found Murph in the back of the end zone on a quick pass for six. Webb kick. (Kansas 21, Louisiana Tech 7).

12:57 – Jon Cornish 1 run. Credit another timely takeaway for another score. A Kubik pass was deflected by Gordon and picked by Aqib Talib. Just 30 yards away from the end zone, Luke found a wide-open Simmons for the first 29, then an option right to Cornish made for an easy one-yard touchdown. Webb kick. (Kansas 28, Louisiana Tech 7).

10:06 – Freddie King 15 pass from Kubik. Louisiana Tech marched 80 yards downfield on just eight plays to answer KU’s scoring splurge. The last play was a bullet pass between the hashes that King caught while falling in the end zone. Horwedel kick. (Kansas 28, Louisiana Tech 14).

4:52 – Scott Webb 47 field goal. A 12-play, 50-yard drive progressed with two shovel passes to Jon Cornish of 14 and 18 yards, and a screen pass to Clark Green for 10 yards. The Jayhawks were going to go for on fourth-and-one, but a false start penalty moved them back five yards. Webb kicked the career-long field-goal, barely getting it over the crossbar. (Kansas 31, Louisiana Tech 14).

1:41 – Scott Webb 24 field goal. A Rodney Fowler interception put KU in great field position again, and after two strong runs, the drive sputtered, allowing Webb to boot his second field goal. (Kansas 34, Louisiana Tech 14).

How they scored

By Staff     Sep 11, 2005

First Quarter

:32 – Clark Green 4 run. Kansas needed just six plays to move 90 yards late in the first quarter. The big play was a play-action in a two-tight-end set, where quarterback Brian Luke found Brian Murph for a 59-yard gain down the middle of the field. A personal-foul penalty on ASU prolonged the drive again, and Green rushed in up the middle for six on second down. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 7, Appalachian State 0).

Second Quarter

10:14 – Jon Cornish 9 run. Kansas chugged its way downfield a bit slower this time, covering 58 yards in 10 plays. Most of it was done through the air with Luke’s arm, but Jon Cornish had three carries for 24 yards, the last up the middle and into the end zone as he was being hit. Webb kick missed wide right. (KU 13, ASU 0).

Third Quarter

7:49 – Brian Luke 1 run. A huge drive spanning 7:11 culminated with KU going for it on fourth down from the one-yard line. The long play was a shovel pass from Luke to Clark Green that went 15 yards, but otherwise, it was a workmanlike 14-play drive. Luke scampered in on an option to score six. Webb kick. (KU 20, ASU 0).

2:40 – Jon Cornish 1 run. An interesting drive which saw two quarterbacks – Marcus Herford and Brian Luke – ended with a one-yard dive by Cornish. KU started from the ASU 31 after a nice punt return by Charles Gordon, then had 18 yards rushing by Herford before Luke finished the drive. Luke pass to Russell Brorsen incomplete (KU 26, ASU 0).

Fourth Quarter

14:57 – Daniel Bettis 6 pass from Richie Williams. The Mountaineers had two 16-yard plays to move swiftly downfield, and a pass-interference penalty on Gordon put ASU within striking distance. On the first play of the fourth quarter, Williams found Bettis in the end zone. Bettis pass from Williams for the two-point conversion. (KU 26, ASU 8).

14:07 – Jon Cornish 5 run. It was all Cornish in a four-play, 75-yard drive. The junior showed impressive quickness on the drive, and it led to a 58-yard gain on one play, falling out of bounds at the five-yard line. He finished the job on the next play. Webb kick. (KU 33, ASU 8).

9:15 – Webb 34 field goal. Herford took the reins at quarterback again, using his legs and feet to advance KU into field-goal territory. The drive stalled, though, and Webb booted a field goal to put the Jayhawks up 28. (KU 36, ASU 8).

How they scored

By Staff     Nov 21, 2004

First Quarter

8:04 — Clark Green 12 run. The Jayhawks rolled downfield on their second possession, a seven-play, 56-yard drive with both passing and rushing. The drive was fueled by Green, who had three rushes for 25 yards and caught a pass for a first down. On his last run, he bolted through a thin seam, then bulled over a defender while diving into the end zone. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 7, Missouri 0).

Second Quarter

9:56 — Brandon Rideau 8 pass from Brian Luke. KU’s quarterback orchestrated a 12-play, 82-yard drive brilliantly, completing all six of his passes for 66 yards during the series. Three of his completions were to tight end Lyonel Anderson for 30 yards, but the last was a slant route by Rideau that was caught at the goal line. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 14, Missouri 0).

3:42 — Austine Nwabuisi 1 run. KU relied on the run the next time it got the ball, rushing six of its eight plays in the 54-yard drive. The key play, though, was a 24-yard completion from Luke to Rideau, which was lengthened by a nifty spin move that nearly allowed him to score. Two plays later, Nwabuisi bulled in for the touchdown. (Kansas 21, Missouri 0).

Third Quarter

11:13 — Anderson 30 pass from Luke. KU once again marched downfield, picking up 80 yards on 11 plays, most of them passes. The Jayhawks converted all three of their third downs, all by pinpoint passes from Luke. The last, on third and nine, was a completion to a wide-open Anderson, who rumbled into the end zone untouched. Webb kick. (Kansas 28, Missouri 0).

Fourth Quarter

12:36 — Sean Coffey 34 pass from Brad Smith. Luke threw his only interception of the day, and Missouri took over at KU’s 34-yard line. On the first play, Smith found Coffey a step past his defender on the right side, and nailed a strike for the score. Brad Ekwerekwu’s end-around pass fell incomplete for the failed two-point conversion. (Kansas 28, Missouri 6).

11:10 — Coffey 11 pass from Smith. A 46-yard completion from Smith to William Franklin put the Tigers back in striking distance almost immediately after taking possession. The third play of the drive was a shovel pass to Coffey, who wove through defenders and into the end zone. Nash run for two-point conversion. (Kansas 28, Missouri 14).

1:51 — Johnny Beck 35 field goal. A Charles Gordon interception was returned 23 yards into Mizzou territory, and seven KU plays — mostly runs — put the Jayhawks in field-goal range. Beck’s last boot as a Jayhawk was a successful one. (Kansas 31, Missouri 14).

How they scored

By Staff     Nov 14, 2004

First Quarter

:08 — Johnny Beck 39 field goal. KU started in great field position, thanks to a Kevin Kane interception returned 27 yards to the Texas 46. A 21-yard completion from John Nielsen to Marcus Henry put the Jayhawks in field-goal range, and Beck booted a perfect kick through the uprights three plays later. (Kansas 3, Texas 0).

Second Quarter

8:45 — Cedric Benson 16 run. Texas found Benson’s powerful legs to be the key to success. An eight-play, 70-yard drive was finished off by three straight Benson runs for 18, two and the 16-yard touchdown run to the left side. Dusty Mangum kick. (Texas 7, Kansas 3).

2:25 — Johnny Beck 29 field goal. Brian Luke came in as a replacement while Nielsen was being attended to by trainers, and the junior connected with Brandon Rideau on the first play of the drive for a 36-yard gain. After working its way to the 12-yard line, KU’s drive stalled, and Beck booted the field goal. (Texas 7, Kansas 6).

:00 — Beck 36 field goal. A blatant fair-catch-interference penalty gave KU 15 fewer yards to conquer to start the last drive of the half. Two straight completions from Luke to Lyonel Anderson, and a seven-yard run by Clark Green, put the Jayhawks in Beck range. The senior nailed his third field goal of the day. (Kansas 9, Texas 7).

Third Quarter

10:06 — Dusty Mangum 32 field goal. A 46-yard completion from Vince Young to Tony Jeffery put UT within striking distance, and though the Longhorns couldn’t find the end zone, Mangum’s first field goal of the day gave UT the tiny lead. (Texas 10, Kansas 9)

5:53 — Mangum 50 field goal. Besides one 14-yard gain by Benson, the Jayhawk defense stuffed the UT running back for no gain three times in four plays, and a Young incompletion forced Mangum to test his leg strength. The senior booted it through with ease. (Texas 13, Kansas 9).

Fourth Quarter

11:42 — Austine Nwabuisi 1 run. A shanked punt by Texas’ Richmond McGee put KU in great field position at UT’s 39-yard line. A 17-yard completion from Luke to Gary Heaggans gave KU life, and a dazzling 21-yard reception by Charles Gordon in traffic put the Jayhawks within a yard of the score. Nwabuisi finished the drive off, running up the gut and in. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 16, Texas 13).

7:41 — Anderson 1 pass from Brian Luke. A nice catch and subsequent stroke of luck sent KU on its way to a double-digit lead. On third down, Luke found Mark Simmons for first-down yardage, but Simmons found himself open after his defender fell to the ground. Simmons ran for 73 yards to the UT one-yard line before Luke found Anderson on a jump ball for the score. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 23, Texas 13).

4:12 — Young 18 run. Young efficiently moved the offense downfield, orchestrating a 13-play, 87-yard drive with a combination of run and pass. The last was an 18-yard scramble by Young, who found the right corner of the end zone after eluding several Jayhawks. Mangum kick. (Kansas 23, Texas 20).

:11 — Tony Jeffery 21 pass from Young. Young executed on a do-or-die, fourth-and-long play, scrambling for 22 yards when he needed just 18. That prolonged a make-or-break drive, and with time running out, Young found Jeffery on a lob pass in the left side of the end zone for the game-winning touchdown. Mangum kick. (Texas 27, Kansas 23).

How they scored

By Staff     Nov 7, 2004

First Quarter

12:28 — John Randle 2 run. KU’s offense was surprisingly explosive in the game’s opening drive, going 80 yards in just eight plays. Quarterback Jason Swanson had completions of 33, 15 and 19 yards, and Randle had 10 yards rushing. His last two yards were into the end zone. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 7, Colorado 0).

11:15 — Randle 1 run. The Jayhawks continued to click, getting the ball back in great field position after Colorado’s first offensive play was intercepted by Rodney Harris. An end-around rush by Mark Simmons went for 19 yards, and after an eight-yard run by Austine Nwabuisi, Randle rushed in behind the right tackle for the score. Webb kick (Kansas 14, Colorado 0).

8:39 — Dominique Brooks 41 fumble return. After Swanson appeared to have hurt his shoulder after getting hit, John Nielsen entered the game. On his first play, a shovel pass to Randle went for a decent gain, but Randle fumbled, Brooks scooped it up and followed blockers into the end zone. Mason Crosby kick. (Kansas 14, Colorado 7).

Second Quarter

13:36 Crosby 19 FG. Colorado slowly moved downfield after starting the drive on its own 45-yard line. KU often forced the Buffs into third-down situations, but CU prevailed every time but its last, when a Joel Klatt pass fell incomplete in the end zone. Crosby effortlessly nailed the short field goal. (Kansas 14, Colorado 10).

Third Quarter

11:36 — Joe Klopfenstein 4 pass from Klatt. An eight-play, 70-yard drive was dominated by Colorado’s passing attack, most notably a 34-yard completion from Klatt to Lawrence Vickers that put the Buffs in Jayhawk territory. On third and goal, Klatt found Klopfenstein in the left side of the end zone for an easy touchdown. Crosby kick. (Colorado 17, Kansas 14).

6:19 — Brandon Rideau 19 pass from Nielsen. The short passes went for sizable gains throughout the 80-yard drive. Nielsen hooked up with Randle several times on shovel and screen passes, one of which went for 21 yards. On third down, Nielsen found Rideau on the right sideline, and Rideau broke a tackle and pounded his way past two more defenders into the end zone. Webb kick. (Kansas 21, Colorado 17).

:12 — Stephone Robinson 48 punt return. A great punt by John Torp put the Jayhawks on their own one-yard line. After a three-and-out, Kyle Tucker punted to Robinson, who broke one tackle, cut back to the other side of the field and streaked up the right sideline for the touchdown, thanks in part to great blocking by the Buffalos’ special team. Crosby kick. (Colorado 24, Kansas 21).

Fourth Quarter

3:27 — Vickers 4 run. By this point, KU’s defense was obviously exhausted, and Colorado used its running game to make things even tougher. Seven straight runs in a 51-yard drive culminated with Vickers rumbling into the end zone for the score from four yards out. Crosby kick failed. (Colorado 30, Kansas 21).

How they scored

By Staff     Oct 31, 2004

First Quarter

1:13 — Bret Culbertson 22 field goal. Kyle Tucker’s punt deep in Jayhawk territory was blocked by Iowa State’s Todd Blythe, setting up first-and-goal for the Cyclones from the KU nine-yard line. ISU was unable to pound it in, though, and a third-down play was stopped for a loss by Rodney Harris. Culbertson nailed the short field goal to put the Cyclones up. (Iowa State 3, Kansas 0).

Second Quarter

6:17 — Brent Curvey 30 fumble return. After Adam Barmann left the game because of an injury to his right arm, Luke came in for four plays to finish a drive in the second quarter. His last two were fumbles, thanks in part to Iowa State’s massive pass rush. On third down, Luke appeared to try to throw under pressure, but the ball squirted out of his grasp, and Curvey picked it up and ran for the score. Culbertson kick. (Iowa State 10, Kansas 0).

Third Quarter

2:27 — Bret Culbertson 34 field goal. Iowa State moved the ball efficiently on the ground, but as with the theme of the game, couldn’t produce an offensive touchdown out of it. A six-yard pass from Bret Meyer to James Wright put the Cyclones at the nine, but they got no further. (Iowa State 13, Kansas 0).

Fourth Quarter

3:06 — Mark Simmons 20 pass from Jason Swanson. KU’s third quarterback of the day finally found his form with the air attack, completing three passes for 48 yards in a seven-play, 52-yard drive. The junior found Lyonel Anderson for a 21-yard gain and Brandon Rideau for a seven-yard gain on fourth down, then threw a strike to Mark Simmons in the back corner of the end zone for KU’s first — and only — score. Scott Webb kick. (Iowa State 13, Kansas 7).

How they scored

By Staff     Oct 24, 2004

Second Quarter

14:14 — Mark Clayton 61 pass from Jason White. KU stifled Oklahoma’s powerful ground game in the early going, but was equally ineffective in stopping the pass. Completions of seven and eight yards kept the drive alive after a first-down incompletion, and White then found Clayton streaking left to right a step ahead of KU’s Tony Stubbs. Clayton secured the ball and ran in untouched. Trey DiCarlo kick. (Oklahoma 7, Kansas 0).

13:31 — Brandon Rideau 79 pass from Adam Barmann. After a one-yard gain by John Randle, Rideau found himself surprisingly open up the right side. Barmann sent a strong throw his way, and despite OU safety Brodney Pool trying to intercept the pass, Rideau hauled it in and scored untouched. Scott Webb kick. (Kansas 7, Oklahoma 7).

3:26 — Travis Wilson 41 pass from Jason White. OU’s quarterback continued to take advantage of Oklahoma’s speed advantage out wide, completing passes of five and 13 yards to start the drive. After two Adrian Peterson runs and a penalty, White saw Wilson a step ahead of Ronnie Amadi and nailed a strike for the touchdown. Trey DiCarlo kick. (Oklahoma 14, Kansas 7).

:00 — Johnny Beck 43 field goal. Oklahoma dropped the snap while trying to punt the ball out of dangerous territory, and KU took over on the OU 36-yard line with 46 seconds to play. Quarterback Jason Swanson put KU in field-goal range with a seven-yard scramble for a first down. Two plays later, Beck booted a 43-yard kick against the wind that was barely long enough and right down the middle. (Oklahoma 14, Kansas 10).

Third Quarter

11:36 — Brandon Jones 69 pass from Jason White. With the Jayhawks still shutting down OU’s running game, White once again relied on his arm to move the ball. Two straight passes for 17 yards set up a second-and-one, where White found Jones on a deep route for the score. Trey DiCarlo kick. (Oklahoma 21, Kansas 10).

7:42 — Lance Mitchell 28 fumble return. Facing second down and eight yards to go, Jason Swanson dropped back to pass. He took too long, though, and the pocket collapsed on him. As he cocked his arm to throw, the ball was stripped and rolled outside of the pocket, where Mitchell picked it up, avoided a few Jayhawks and scored the defensive touchdown. DiCarlo kick. (Oklahoma 28, Kansas 10).

Fourth Quarter

9:25 — Peterson 11 run. Peterson finally had success running the ball, rumbling around, past and through KU defenders in the fourth quarter. After a pass to John Randle was bobbled and subsequently intercepted by Rufus Alexander, Peterson led the drive into the end zone, breaking three tackles on the touchdown run. DiCarlo kick. (Oklahoma 35, Kansas 10).

:35 — Mark Bradley 8 pass from Jason White. Keuan Jones and Peterson combined to move the ball downfield against KU’s tired defense. Peterson broke off gains of 17 and 21 yards, while Jones had three carries for 12 yards. White dropped back on third and goal and found an open Bradley for the score. DiCarlo kick blocked. (Oklahoma 41, Kansas 10).

How they scored

By Staff     Oct 10, 2004

First Quarter

5:48 — Lyonel Anderson 2 pass from Adam Barmann. KU did better on its third-down conversions, prolonging the drive with a 15-yard Mark Simmons reception on third down, then getting a pass-interference call in the end zone on a third-down play. Scott Webb kick (Kansas 7, Kansas State 0).

Second Quarter

13:14 — Joe Rheem 49 field goal. Darren Sproles got the quick drive off to a good start, running for nine and seven yards and catching a pass for two more. But the Wildcats went backwards after that. (Kansas 7, Kansas State 3).

2:01 — Joe Rheem 37 field goal. A struggling K-State offense got a gigantic boost when Webb found Yamon Figurs for a 48-yard gain on second-and-21 to put the Wildcats in striking distance. K-State didn’t get another first down. (Kansas 7, Kansas State 6).

Third Quarter

10:45 — Johnny Beck 27 field goal. Sproles fumbled a punt return. KU recovered on K-State’s 33, and got just one first down on a pass-interference penalty. (Kansas 10, Kansas State 6).

8:55 — Randle 24 pass from Adam Barmann. After Charles Gordon returned a punt 49 yards to the K-State 24, KU worked a razzle-dazzle play to perfection. Barmann found Brandon Rideau on an apparent screen pass for no gain, but Rideau immediately pitched it to Randle streaking up the left side. (Kansas 17, Kansas State 6).

2:20 — Dylan Meier 2 run. A colossal 15-play, 85-yard drive was marred with KU penalties, keeping the Wildcats alive to bring the game close. (Kansas 17, Kansas State 14).

Fourth Quarter

13:20 — Tony Madison 86 pass from Dylan Meier. Meier dropped back and fired a bomb in stride to Madison, who was about seven yards in front of cornerback Gordon. Madison sprinted the rest of the way without a threat. Rheem kick. (Kansas State 21, Kansas 17).

5:28 — Mark Simmons 31 pass from Jason Swanson. A sputtering drive received a huge boost when Simmons snagged a one-handed catch on third down. The Jayhawks were helped by a 15-yard penalty before Simmons grabbed the pinpoint pass under tight coverage. Webb kick. (Kansas 24, Kansas State 21).

3:16 — John Randle 42 run. Easily the most amazing run of the night, Randle broke five tackles on a toss sweep to the right side. Webb kick. (Kansas 31, Kansas State 21).

2:06 — Brian Casey 8 pass from Dylan Meier. A desperate Wildcat drive received a huge boost when Meier found Figurs on a 51-yard completion on fourth down. The drive was extended, and Meier found Casey on an eight-yard bullet pass. Rheem kick. (Kansas 31, Kansas State 28).

How they scored

By Staff     Oct 3, 2004

First Quarter

14:48 — Team safety. Facing second down at the eight-yard line, Nebraska’s Joe Dailey had an errant toss back to Tierre Green on an attempted sweep play that rolled into the end zone. Dailey recovered the ball near the back of the end zone, but was pushed out of the back by two KU defensive linemen. (Kansas 2, Nebraska 0).

Second Quarter

10:47 — Johnny Beck 36 field goal. Kansas started the drive at its own 26-yard line and moved downfield thanks to three consecutive completions to Gary Heaggans (15, 23 yards) and Mark Simmons (nine yards). (Kansas 5, Nebraska 0).

2:57 — Cory Ross 18 run. KU’s run defense struggled during a short drive that started at KU’s 47-yard line. Ross picked up gains of seven and nine yards, while Brandon Jackson added an eight-yard carry to set up first-and-10 at the 18-yard line. There, Ross scooted through a small hole and bolted toward the right corner of the end zone for the score. Sandro DeAngelis kick. (Nebraska 7, Kansas 5).

Third Quarter

6:59 — Johnny Beck 39 field goal. KU slowly worked its way downfield after starting the drive at its own 27. The series was barely surviving until a 29-yard run by John Randle put KU in field-goal range. The Jayhawks lost yardage after Randle’s big gain, but KU was still in Beck’s range. (Kansas 8, Nebraska 7).

4:12 — Cory Ross 14 pass from Joe Dailey. The Huskers moved the ball swiftly downfield, the biggest dent a 37-yard reception from Dailey to Ross Pilkington. Facing third down at the 14-yard line, Dailey found Ross on a screen pass to the right side, and Ross bolted in the end zone for the score. Sandro DeAngelis kick. (Nebraska 14, Kansas 8).

First Quarter

9:59 — Team safety. KU’s first possession stalled at its own 10-yard line, and punter Kyle Tucker couldn’t get a hand on Kevin Kane’s short snap, which bounced out of the end zone. (Texas Tech 2, KU 0)

6:01 — John Randle 36 pass from Adam Barmann. Rodney Harris returned an interception 52 yards to the Texas Tech 36. On first down, Randle caught a short pass from Barmann and took it to the end zone. Scott Webb kick. (KU 7, Tech 2)

2:48 — Randle 1 run. KU took over at Tech’s 40 after a short Tech punt, Barmann completed a key third-down pass to Mark Simmons, and Randle had a 14-yard reception and a 12-yard run to set up his second TD. Webb kick. (KU 14, Tech 2)
