K-State ‘expects’ to end Jayhawks’ run

— Men's basketball fans in the Sunflower State have come to expect one thing, and one thing only, when Kansas University plays Kansas State in the Little Apple.

That's a KU victory, of course.

"It's a tradition for us to lose, it seems like," K-State junior guard David Hoskins said, quickly adding, "I think this year is a little different. We've got fans expecting us to win, and we go into this game expecting to win."

Yes, at 8 tonight in front of ESPN's Big Monday cameras, Kansas State (19-8 overall, 8-4 Big 12 Conference) fully expects to put an end to a 23-game home losing streak to rival KU (23-4, 10-2).

That's because first-year coach Bob Huggins guaranteed a victory on Oct. 15 at the Wildcats' season-opening "Madness in Manhattan" at Bramlage Coliseum.

"Remember, Feb. 19 is when we beat 'The Streak.' Then we will have a rivalry," Huggins said.

"I think this is the year we can possibly do it," noted KSU senior Jermaine Maybank, who scored 26 points in KSU's 97-70 loss to KU 12 days ago at Allen Fieldhouse.

"You try to stay away from it and take it one game at a time, but when you hear about a streak like that, you want to be a part of the team that ended the streak. That's a great team they have down the road, but we're pretty good when we're playing confident. We have to defend our court."

KU has won 18 straight games at Bramlage after closing old Ahearn Fieldhouse with five straight wins.

"I think it will be crazy, especially with coach Huggins promising a win at their Late Night and all that," KU sophomore Mario Chalmers said. "We've just got to stay focused on the game."

Chalmers was asked if Huggins' guarantee might motivate KU, as well as a promotion that will have all fans wearing black shirts in a Bramlage "blackout" for the rivalry game.

"Yes, because we are trying to keep the season sweep. Last year they got us (at Allen Fieldhouse). This year we're trying to get them twice," Chalmers said.

KU coach Bill Self said it's important for his team to focus on only one thing - tonight's game. The Streak, he says, is as "irrelevant" as Huggins predicting victory.

"Danny (Manning), Paul (Pierce), Raef (LaFrentz), Richard Scott, those guys : it was a totally different era," Self said of past players who had much to do with the streak. "As far as I'm concerned Sherron (Collins) and Shady (Darrell Arthur) are 0-0, and Mario, Brandon (Rush) and Julian (Wright) are 1-0, down the line. That's the extent of it.

Kansas State coach Bob Huggins provides some encouragement during the first half of the Wildcats' 65-47 victory Saturday over Iowa State. Tonight, Huggins will try to end K-State's 23-game losing streak in Manhattan to Kansas University.

"It (streak) has been going on a long time. It's a remarkable deal. It will end. It will end someday. Hopefully, we can prolong it another year."

Of putting an end to the streak, Huggins said: "I want to win them all. I've never looked at a schedule and said, 'Man, if we can win this many.' We've got to line up and play and win."

He said the 'Cats must play much better than the initial meeting to stand a chance.

"We didn't do anything we were supposed to do," he said. "I'll look to see if we can figure something out. Dalonte (Hill, assistant coach) has a pretty good handle on it (scouting report). We were going to guard ball screens a certain way, and I don't think we guarded them that way once."

Self believes the Wildcats will stick to the Jayhawks tonight.

"We will find out how tough we are (in Manhattan)," Self said. "Certainly the first game was not a true indication of how competitive this rivalry is going to become. I know they'll play great. We'll have to play very well to win. There will be no in-between. If we don't play well, we won't win. I'm sure their crowd will be into it."

Self thinks the crowd will provide "a fabulous atmosphere. So much interest has been generated by Bob's hiring. Oklahoma State my first year at their place, Missouri every year : this will be as good an atmosphere we've played in since I've been here."

The KSU fans may remember KU's student section chanting "DUI, DUI" at Huggins and displaying newspapers of Huggins behind bars with the wording "Hugs and Thugs."

"It'll be crazy. We expect the fans to be as mean as possible," junior Russell Robinson said. "We've got to handle the pressure of the road."

"It will be up there with the level of Missouri, the same level as Missouri," Rush said. "We have to stay focused, keep our blinders on, not look to the left or right."

¢ On Maybank: Former St. John's player Maybank hit seven of 10 shots and 12 of 15 free throws in the first meeting in Lawrence.

"We'll respect him. I doubt he'll get another (game) like that, but he is capable," Robinson said, adding, "we need to limit his touches."

¢ KSU's Wright expects better: Akeem Wright didn't score in 10 minutes in the first meeting.

"Things went poorly, but we just didn't execute our offense as well as we should and we didn't play defense at all," he said. "We've just got to study film this time around and when the game comes, bring it to them in the opening minutes. That's a good team coming off a huge 53-point win over Nebraska. But when they come in here they're definitely going to see a different ballgame."

¢ KU's Rush on the streak: "I didn't have a part of it. Well I had one part of it, last year. I don't pay attention to it. We'll try to keep it going."

¢ Self on having just one day to prepare: "We play four Big Monday games. Our guys are used to one-day preparation. The NCAA Tournament is one-day 'prep.' This is what you will have to go through if you are successful in the postseason.

"What we'll do is study our first game. Since then it's hard to change a lot when you only have one hour to work on it (Sunday). They won't practice long and we won't. Our package is in. I don't know if there is time. I would think we'll have a decent book on them and they on us."

¢ Freshman Darrell Arthur on tonight's atmosphere: "I heart it will be loud. The fans get into it like at Missouri. It'll be tough trying to get a win."

¢ Regular road schedule: The Jayhawks, who practiced Sunday and caught part of KU's women's victory over K-State, traveled to Manhattan on Sunday night and will hold a shootaround in Bramlage today.

This game has more implications than "the streak", keeps em tide with A&M for first, keeps them in running for a 2 seed in the big dance. The streak is nice, but cmon lets worry about this season and the final three games before the tournys begin.

With all of the highly ranked teams faltering recently (UCLA and Florida both have recent losses, too.) and both Wisconsin and Ohio State having to face off soon, the Hawks may be playing for a number one seed if they win out. Carolina still has to face Duke and a couple other solid ACC teams. UCLA doesn't have an easy road. If KU wins the Big XII outright (or ties and then wins the tournament), they could catch the #1 vacated by whichever team stumbles down the stretch. A loss puts them on the 2-3 line. A win keeps them on the 1-2 line.

You should treat every oponent and every game with respect. Anyone can lose to anyone at any time. If you don't believe me, just look up utep, oru, Richmond, DePaul, Texas Tech, Texas A&M, URI, Bucknell, Bradley... need I go on?

KState is a threat as long as they are standing on the court. This game needs to be dealt with like it is in the way of a national championship (because it is). KU would be wise not to overlook their foe and take it to them.

From what I have been reading in regard to the players' comments, they are planning on doing just that. One game at a time.

Theres no need to take the boards down a negative road. While I think your last post may give a hint of an inferiority complex, I dont think youre an idiot. Jaybate and I don't call each other and dream of ways to persecute you. It's not a vast right-wing conspiracy. If we or anyone else disagrees with you it should be on the merits of what you put in these posts. More to the point, I think most posters here are tired of the negativity...I really do! Ive never thought disagreements on content should end up being personal. There's a fat lot of things Im more concerned with in life than picking on you...like winning the damn game tonight. The take-home message is that if you will not take disagreements here personally and get your feathers ruffled, we can perhaps have a constructive dialogue on KU hoops.

PS. Dont get bent out of shape over the tone of this post. I've had to be reminded myself on occasion.

McKay suspends UNM's Giddensposted: Monday, February 19, 2007 | Feedback | Print Entry

Somehow, no one should be surprised that New Mexico coach Ritchie McKay suspended J.R. Giddens essentially for being selfish. This is the same player who was pushed out at Kansas, not just for his role in a fight at a bar but also because of his inability to mesh with the Jayhawks and the staff.

When McKay took on Giddens, he was certain that Giddens would be a new man, a player who wouldn't be all about himself. He even pumped him up to be an NBA lottery pick. Well, that Giddens is still lost somewhere between Lawrence and Albuquerque, because the one that arrived didn't measure up to all the hype.

"I just felt like we needed to continue to emphasize the important parts of our program and [one of those is] being a good teammate," McKay said Sunday night about his decision to remove his leading scorer. Giddens missed four other games this season due to injuries.

There has been a party planned in this building on this date since Bob Huggins announced that the streak would end tonight. I hope that there is a party and the Jayhawks are the ones who are jubilant. The confidence that KSU students and fans in general have displayed is quite odd to me. They got beat by 27 in Lawrence but they still guarantee a win tonight. It could happen, yes, but it will be a huge upset if it does, which is why their confidence baffles me. There is no reason that KU should lose if they play well. But, you never know.

I think it's good that Self downplays the streak. We don't need to put added pressure on the KU players. Just let them approach it like another tough road game against a good team, and stay focused. It's certainly worked for most of the season. What bugs me is that this streak has gotten NO attention from the national media. Can you even begin to imagine the attention it would be getting if UNC had won at Duke for 23 consecutive years???

The "streak" is only relevant in terms of how it is played to the players and coaches, and the psychological impact it has on each individual and team, which, based on the statements coming out of both camps, should be a non-factor for KU, and a slight motivator for KSU. I'm sure that behind closed doors coach Huggins is using a different ploy from the one in which he engages publicly.

At any rate, as a fan, all I can do is hope that the 'Hawks are not overconfident and come to play with the same intensity and "want to" as they have in recent contests. I'd imagine coach Self is preaching something along those lines, but young men do not always listen to the wisdom of their elders.

I certainly hope the players are not reading these boards and buying into all of the unrealistic predictions for the slaughter of the Mildcats tonight. Let's face it, nobody expected KU to lose to KSU at AFH last year, but it happened, and that was coming off a 15 point loss to a bad Nebraska team.

Yeah, the poll situation kind of irks me as well.

Duke moved back up primarily because everyone below about #15 loses every week, so if you win a couple games, you're guaranteed to move back up, but...

The UNC b.s. is just that. The pollsters refuse to move those top 5 teams out of the top 5, period. If you look back over the past month-and-a-half or so, it's been the same teams, just shuffled around.

If you look at resumes, KU's is solid for a 2-seed, and competitive for a 1 if we win out in the regular season. The RPI is completely meaningless. Luckily, the committees rarely stick to polls when seeding the tournament. Still, it would be nice for KU to be rewarded for their solid play as of late. how did we lose to a&m?

That being said its not like it should make the rivalry that much better seeing as even if they have the best freshman in the country we will most likely be returning our top 8 scorers next season ( if Rush doesn't leave) and gaining a 5 star center that should greatly improve our lineup seeing as Kaun hasn't been playing to nearly the potential we thought he would and another great guard ( which i can't see getting to much playing time since we already have an amazing back court...

oh and p.s. those one and done players u are talking about are at so many of the top schools now, and most of the players that we all thought would be one and done end up sticking around for an extra 1 or 2 years because they realize that they have so much more to work on look at how young so many of the teams are this year that are in the top 10 in the nation right now

Now all that being said I for one would love to see KSU become a great basketball team (as terrible as that sounds) b/c all the announcers and talk show hosts are right, this isn't a good rivalry right now between KU and KSU, it isn't really a rivalry, you can't have a good rivalry when a team has won 32 of the last 33 meetings, look at the UNC Duke rivalry, now that is one friggen sweet rivalry, wouldn't it be awesome if Kansas could be involved in something like that, now I'm definatly not saying that I hope it becomes a rivalry by KSU beating Kansas anytime soon, especially this season but i would love to have a rivalry worth actually talking about

He actually guaranteed a victory? Maybe he tanked it in Lawrence just to give us a false sense of security. I'm kidding::.sort of.

Mildly interesting story in the Star. Leads me to believe this game is much more important to k-state than to KU. Have to believe the crowd will be a big factor but playing in columbia each year should be adequate preparation. I have every reason to believe we will come away with a win but won't go so far as to guarantee one.

As Charles Dickens might note re: K-State, "great expectations" sometimes lead to great disappointment.

Now shut up state fan ... at least for a couple of weeks. I hope our paths cross yet again in Oklahoma City so I can listen to more of your rationale on how you're going to beat the Hawks. The crap you were spewing last week and weekend sure didn't pan out now did it? Now you want us to 'wait until next year'? I can't wait that long to hear how you're going to pull off the victory. We must meet again in the Big XII tourney!!

As it now seems, I would "expect" the streak to continue Hugs 'n Thugs...hahaha! Now maybe those kittens out west will sit quiet and drink their milk from the bowl. Once again the 'Hawks dug deep and put K-state in their place in the prairie. Best get back to harvesting those fields. Also, when the game is at home isn't it usually a "white out" and not a "black out?" How retarded was that?

Rock Chalk Jayhawk KU!!!
