There was an icy standoff during the opening coin toss. Some trash talk and unsportsmanlike penalties after plays. But in the end, the result was the same for the Kansas football team as all of its other Big 12 games.

The Jayhawks couldn’t contain a Baker Mayfield-led offense throughout the second half and the offense never had much success in a 41-3 loss in their final home game of the season Saturday at Memorial Stadium.

Mayfield, who came up empty when he reached out for a handshake at the coin toss, continued his Heisman campaign by completing 20 of his 30 passing attempts for 257 passing yards and three touchdowns. It’s the 24th straight game he’s thrown for two scores.

KU’s defense limited the third-ranked Sooners (10-1, 7-1 Big 12) for a majority of the first half in windy conditions. Oklahoma scored once on its first five drives — a 34-yard touchdown catch by Rodney Anderson on fourth down.

The Jayhawks’ offense couldn’t take advantage, only scoring on a 23-yard field goal by Gabriel Rui at the start of the second quarter. Quarterback Carter Stanley was 19-of-34 passing for 123 yards and one interception. The Sooners turned that turnover into a three-yard touchdown run by Jordan Smallwood.

Kansas (1-10, 0-8) only garnered 155 yards of total offense, held to only 32 rushing yards. Khalil Herbert led with 38 yards on the ground in 13 attempts before he exited with an injury in the second half. Evan Fairs and Chase Harrell both recorded six catches.

Here’s a quick look back at some of the action:

The game turned when: On the final drive of the first half, the Sooners started at their own 16-yard line with 50 seconds left before halftime. In a quick three-play drive, helped by a couple of KU penalties, Oklahoma scored a touchdown and increased its lead to 21-3.

Mayfield started the possession with a 30-yard pass to Dimitri Flowers, while the Sooners were given another 15 yards because of a late hit penalty on KU cornerback Hasan Defense.

After Defense committed a holding penalty, pushing the Sooners on the edge of the red zone, Mayfield finished the scoring drive with a 24-yard touchdown pass to Marquise Brown on a screen pass. Brown broke a tackle, cut across the middle and raced the left side of the end zone.

Offensive highlight: At the beginning of the third quarter, Steven Sims Jr. added another catch to his list of highlight reel plays. Stanley fired a fade pass along the left sideline, right in front of KU’s bench.

Sims, in one-on-one coverage, separated from OU defensive back Tre Norwood and pulled in the grab by holding the ball high up on the right side of his shoulder pads for a 34-yard reception. Working to keep his feet inbounds, Sims slid out of bounds. It was KU’s longest play of the game.

Defensive highlight: During the first half, the Kansas defense forced five punts, including four 3-and-out drives. It was the most punts in any game for the Sooners this season, as Mayfield was limited to only 51 passing yards on the team’s first seven drives.

The Sooners were 3 of 14 on third downs (21 percent), their worst conversion rate of the season. Of course, that didn’t stop Oklahoma’s offense from finding a rhythm throughout the second half.

Key stat: Red zone conversions. The Sooners had four drives inside of the 20-yard line and converted three of them into touchdowns. KU only had one drive in the red zone, at the start of the second quarter, but was forced to settle for a field goal after a high snap in the Wildcat formation led to a 10-yard loss.

In the Jayhawks’ last 11 drives into the red zone, they’ve only scored four touchdowns.

Up next: The Jayhawks will complete their 2017 season when they travel to play Oklahoma State next week at Boone Pickens Stadium. Searching for their first Big 12 win of the season, KU will attempt to end a 45-game road losing streak.

My vote also. Spend the money on the update to build 50,000 seat basketball arena lol.

Matt Gauntt 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Great.....and what purpose will disbanding the program serve except for you to beat your chest.

Think, please........before you engage the keyboard.

David Kemp 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Ridiculous radio guys scted like we were still in the game at 28-3. Last time I checked no big 12 team has won a game punting 8 times and scoring 3 pts. Yes we need to recruit qbs because Stanley is barely a serviceable backup .

Barry Weiss 3 weeks, 3 days ago

we suck, we are not getting better. that is all.

David Kemp 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Worst part is how radio praising Bowen defense

Timothy Grillot 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Honestly, making OU punt 4 times in the first half is pretty good defense. Our offense having all 3 and outs for most of the second half didn't help much either. It is a wonder it wasn't 80 to nothing.

David Kemp 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Problem is Bowens defenses are notoriously bad and keeping him on staff Continues to perpetrate bad play

Marc Frey 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Players dropping passes when our QB is on target more than usual, calling a wildcat play ( low chance of success), stupid penalties, trash talking a team kicking your ass, etc..... Our season wrapped up today in one game.

Gerry Butler 3 weeks, 3 days ago

These kind of plays is what separate us from even being average. - Random false starts at crucial times. - stupid penalities helping opposition maintain drives, plays 1st & goal from the 2 and your center snaps a ball 10 yards over your QB head, receivers dropping sure catches - -just a small sampling of why we are not even average

Suzi Marshall 3 weeks, 3 days ago

It's been really hard trying to support this team, coaching staff and athletic department. The bush league antiques (not shaking hands), cheap shot by Defensee and earlier sideline goofing around by players during beatings...make it impossible.

What's going on here? Is the coaching staff teaching this kind of stuff?

David Kemp 3 weeks, 3 days ago

This coaching staff has the participation trophy attitude and there is obviously no dicipline. Yet they say they run a clean program in spite of all these bush league antics.

Suzi Marshall 3 weeks, 3 days ago

lol... perhaps these antics are antiques that should be long gone.

Gerry Butler 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Or how about the class act of Baker Mayfield grabbing his Crotch and smacking his a - - while looking at the Ku sideline and saying F- - - Y - - nothing but class act

Suzi Marshall 3 weeks, 3 days ago

We initiated the sorry saga. I'm much more concerned about our side.

David Kemp 3 weeks, 3 days ago

One disrespect to another. Difference is you can't do that when you are 1-10 trying to gain some humility

Suzi Marshall 3 weeks, 3 days ago

...plus trying to raise $320 MM to rebuild a stadium for a bunch of ....you know whats.

Gerry Butler 3 weeks, 3 days ago

What part of that is in true there sparky? - -The worst 1st half performance by Mayfield since 2015 -- Most time Oklahoma has had to punt this year. - -like 200 yds less then their average on offense for the year. - -THIS game wasn't lost by the Defense - -If you can't get an offense that can do no better then 2 yds per possession - -you don't have receivers that an catch balls when it hits them right in the hands. - Let me have some of that crap your smoking- -your not blaming this on the defense. - I don't care who's defense is playing when you only get 0:45 seconds 1:00 in between possessions - - your gonna wear down - nice try but THIS game WAS NOT ON THE dEFENSE

Rick Meyer 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Last time I looked our wonderful defense gave up 41 points.

Mike Hart 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Rick Meyer: You clearly didn't watch the game. Yeah.. OU had 41 points on the scoreboard, but the offense turned the ball over (3 yard line)... and KU stopped them many times, particularly in the first half. If you won't admit that...then you lose any and all credibility. You fellow KU fans disgust me. Bitch and complain all the time...and give absolutely no credit to any progress on the field. If you can't see that the defense played better today than earlier ... then you don't know the first thing about football. Beaty is back next year... and all the whining isn't going to change that fact. Either support the team... or go away...and come back when there is a new coach.

Chris DeWeese 3 weeks, 2 days ago

There is nothing wrong with holding this coaching staff accountable. Bowen's defenses are nothing to brag about. He has NFL caliber talent at his disposal, and he's never been able to put a respectable product on the field. While I agree that our offense is inept and impotent, our defense isn't anything special. They are perennially ranked at the bottom of FBS. It's time to say goodbye to Clint Bowen.

Lee Henry 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Been following the Hawks since the 50's...really sad to watch such a team so unready week in week out... no discipline on side line during game stupid mistakes every week during game. ..And I was really saddened by the not respecting OU at the coin toss...but the news just shows Mayfields little side line jester and not mention our being disrespectful to OU at the coin toss...

Gerry Butler 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Little? - -Little sideline jesture? roflmao - -good looking our holy crap what game you watching - and this is a kid that is being show cased for Heisman? - -The commentators had it EXACTLY right this kid is nothing more then a punk

John Brazelton 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Football is a games of inches. Defense could have had two interceptions and wide receivers missed about 4 long balls. QB threw a 90 mile an hour fastball at Fears right behind the defensive line. What this shows is players trying too hard and not relaxing during plays. Relaxed players make good plays because they believe that they're going to do it..

Charlie Gaughn 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Sitting here reflecting on how I feel about the KU football program at the end of this year compared to last:

  1. Last year we had just come off a surprise win over Texas and played competitively in several other games. It appeared we had finally solved our QB issue for the next several years. This year we’ve had our heads handed to us for ten straight games and it’s obvious that we’re still, after almost ten years, without a QB solution. All indications are that we’re once again going to try the juco transfer route.

  2. Last year we had made great strides throughout the season on the defensive side and had a number of promising starters returning such as Armstrong, Wise, Dineen, and Loneker. This year we again (after being absolutely horrible in the first 5 or 6 games) have shown great strides on the defensive side. However, there’s a high likelihood that Armstrong and Wise will leave early and Dineen and Loneker will be senior’s, so they will depart the following year.

  3. Last year we consistently showed signs of being a team without player development or discipline. This was demonstrated weekly by the false starts and other silly penalties at crucial points in games. This year we consistently showed signs of being a team without player development or discipline. This was demonstrated weekly by the false starts and other silly penalties at crucial points in games.

  4. Last year we knew we had an AD that was incompetent, but we had hopes that HCDB was a man of integrity and could eventually get us back to a competitive state. This year we still know that we have an AD that is incompetent (but a really nice guy who can suck up to big donor’s) and HCDB has proven to be somewhat of a tale teller and cheerleader without a clue how to coach at this level.

So tell me, is this progress…..?

David Kemp 3 weeks, 3 days ago

I agree, particularly that Stanley is a fair backup not a starter. Armstrong and Wise stock have dropped significantly from last year so I am not convinced they will leave. Unfortunately we still need to dip heavy into juco market to fill vital roles and I must agree with trying to find yet another qb since we have gone thru. 2 this year who are not the answer.

[''] 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Meachum is getting paid $400K & Bowen $500K for offensive & defensive units each ranked in the 110s out of 130 FBS teams. Our head coach has ONE FBS victory in 3 years despite having two players that will leave early for the NFL Draft. 33 losses include 4 losses against MAC teams.

Chris DeWeese 3 weeks, 2 days ago

Dorance and Daniel aren't going anywhere. They play for a terrible team and a terrible defensive coordinator. No NFL team would take a chance on them now.

Jeff Coffman 3 weeks, 3 days ago

David Beaty should be suspended for a game. Dr Zenger do your job. We have a primetime game and it starts with 2 children standing on the Jayhawk and the top team in the conference with the Heisman hopeful standing across our team, and our Captains refuse to shake his hand. The embarrassment is on the Jayhawks, I expect a suspension of David Beaty, most embarrassing thing that has happened to the Jayhawk team this year.

Chris DeWeese 3 weeks, 2 days ago

While I agree that suspending Beaty is a bit over the top, I don't blame Jeff for wanting to hold Beaty accountable for our players' antics. It was clearly poor sportsmanship and has no place in this program. If the captains don't receive some form of punishment for that stunt (e.g. extra sprints or something) then I will have lost even more respect for this coaching staff.

Jeff Coffman 3 weeks, 2 days ago

Maybe so...ive seen this coach go from not being able to coach on the field to one that isn't in control of the football field. I also see a front page news story on the news about KU team not being sportsmen. Beaty is getting worse... four years left on his contract and it will only get worse if Zinger doesn't do something about it.

Drew Doerfler 3 weeks, 3 days ago

i'm sorry, but this team is just sad......they can't even get the handshake at the beginning of the game down without making KU look like blank! KU ended up looking bad...again....yes Mayfield retaliated...but hey..i love him! he plays with emotion...piss him off and he retaliates....and he actually backs it up on the field! I didn't like the handshake snub at ALL! If you want to have attitude, here's an idea..do it through your play on the field.....this entire team and coaching staff are sad...i'm sorry

Kevin Robert Fest 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Wash rinse repeat. There will be the same complaints next week. Same dropped passes, bad penalties and missed tackles. This is the middle of the process? Ok when they are 1-11 next year what will Beaty say then? They make every team they play look like Alabama. How can a 1-9 team talk trash? What could they possibly be saying?Total embarrassment. Hey mercifully it will all be over next week. In the off season we can listen to Coach Carnival Barker tell us how the team is improving and that they are a bowl team. Whomever thinks that this team will win more than 1 game next year is crazy. CRAZY C. R. A. Z. Y.

Theyweren't close in any Big 12 game this year AND IT IS NOT BECAUSE OF THE SCHOLARSHIP NUMBERS!!!

Mike Hart 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Kevin, call me crazy, because they will win more than one... and if not, Beaty is gone... and you all will have your wish. Then in 2 years, when new coach is not successful... you same putzes will be on here bitching and calling for his head too. And I will just laugh and shake my head.... because this is exactly the kind of results "fans" like you deserve. I look forward to you being here next year when KU is performing better. I'm going to screen shot all this negativity. Who are they going to get for 2018? Let me hear the candidates... I mean... the candidates... who will actually COME to KU.

Gerry Butler 3 weeks, 2 days ago

Like Einstein said. - - -Wash Rinse Repeat, that is what these idiots like doing, they think if we keep firing Coaches every two-three years then sooner or later they might find somebody roflmfao. these people are really sad. - Damm the hell with getting any continuity, your going to have all kinds of recruits wanting to come not knowing if the Coach that recruited them will be here the following year or not. - -Ya lets just keep Washing - - Rinsing and repeating - -oh dam been two years time to fire the Coach again ya that works for me lol. - How many Seniors we have leaving this year again? - - The SURE FIRE solution for all the let's fire the Coach AGAIN bandwagoner's is get together see how many of you can fit into your little VW beetle drive down to the AD office and tell them you want to take over the Coaching position. - -Tell them how your un-defeated from your Recliner spot and have never made a wrong call I'm sure they will welcome you all with open arms. - -Can't wait to see how that turns out

David Kemp 3 weeks, 2 days ago

We do have great continuity 0-12, 2-10, and 1-11 probable. Take that along with the expectation of 0-12, 1-11, or maybe 2-10 next year. Yes you are right we need to maintain continuity?

[''] 3 weeks, 3 days ago

OU started TWO true freshmen CBs today. We still could not score a TD. Pathetic. We did not score a TD in FOUR different Big12 games (ISU, Baylor, TCU & OU).

Gerry Butler 3 weeks, 2 days ago

Ya and our Defense sucks right? - - don't worry that they are on the field 3/4 of the game. they can't stop a cold right? - You people suck

Bryan Schmiedeler 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Not shaking hands during the coin toss was idiotic and it made KU look petty. We are playing a potential national playoff team and before the snap we pull a stunt like that to, I guess, fire up our team?

The coaching staff should concentrate on getting the team to execute the basic skills in football - tackling, executing your assignment, avoiding penalties and miscues, etc. Those are the foundations for a successful program and can be taught to college calibre players regardless of talent. Enough with the bizarre play calling (wildcat at 1st and goal at the one!!!) and very questionable motivational techniques.

Those are the things I look for when evaluating progress in a rebuilding program.

The one area where (amazingly) I don't see backsliding is effort. Under Weiss you could see that the team would mentally check out about half way through the game. You could smell that they didn't believe in their HC just watching the game from your coach.

My fear now is now is that Beaty doesn't seem to be able to coach the fundamentals, meaning even if somehow we improve our personnel we will STILL play unsound football. We could win 3-4 games next year (highly unlikely) and it will be seen as progress, but it will be an illusion.

Forget the scores (easier said than done I realize). At the end of 3 years we continue to play fundamentally unsound football. To me that is on the coaches, not the players, and I don't see that the coaches will improve in this area.

Kevin Robert Fest 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Ok Mike name one game besides the first one next year they will win? They weren't competitive in ANY Big 12 game this year. So where are the wins coming from. They weren't competitive against C Michigan nor against Rutgers a few years ago and they are the worst team in the Big 10. So tell me genius where are these wins magically coming from?

Jeff Coffman 3 weeks, 2 days ago

The real question is whether Nicholls state will beat us.

Jim Keen 3 weeks, 3 days ago

Like others here, I was sickened to see the coin toss non-handshake. It made me ashamed to be a Jayhawk. There is absolutely no excuse for a bush league poor sportsmanship gesture like that. And, on national TV no less. Unforgivable. If coach Beaty knew about that plan ahead of time and didn't stop it, he should be fired TODAY! Pathetic!

Jeff Coffman 3 weeks, 2 days ago

And if he didn't, what kind of credibility does he have.

Mike Hart 3 weeks, 2 days ago

Right... I'm sure there was a locker room conversation where Beaty asked: "Hey guys, what are you going to do for the handshake today?". Give me a break. How the F would he know about that? "if coach Beaty knew about.that plan ahead ofttimes and didn't stop it, he should be fired"... talk about blatant speculation, Jim and Jeff?!! "If he didn't know, what kind of credibility does he have". As if any coaches ever talk to their players before the game about the stance/attitude they are going to take at the coin flip. He's back for at least one more year, folks.. either support the team or go away. I'll choose Option 2 for any of you who are indecisive.

Gerry Butler 3 weeks, 2 days ago

Lol Love your humor - you must work in the Comedy field right? - - -Yet we have a punk that is surpose to be in the running for Heisman going and grabbing his Crotch on National TV and pointing to his a- - that's all good right. - -Boy his mama ought to be really proud of those action - -you want to talk about class - that's class. - -Don't be coming at me with WELL HE CAN BACK IT UP. - -get that crap out of here, you can take that somewhere else, he is a total classless punk. - You don't know of anything of what of what of taken place in pregame warmups between Mayfield/Oklahoma - -and KU - -who knows what could of been said BEFORE the game even started lol - -ya ok you got that one lmao

Barry Weiss 3 weeks, 2 days ago

Beaty has turned our football program into a national joke on TV. He should be fired. What a disgrace to the University.

Mike Hart 3 weeks, 2 days ago

Barry, please go away.. and support another team. We don't need this kind "support". You guys can criticize the program..and complain about Beaty.. but to act like Beaty KNEW they were going to do this... and that he is a disgrace to the University: You are an imbecile...and that's the politest spin I can make on that assessment.
