Spodcasters Postgame: Texas Tech
The guys (Tom Keegan, Jesse Newell) analyze what went wrong for KU in its 63-21 loss to Texas Tech. The two also discuss the Jayhawks' chances next week against Kansas State, which also boasts a strong offense.
Justin Thornton said he didn't mind being moved from safety to cornerback Saturday.
He just wished he'd have felt a little more comfortable in his new setting.
"I've just got to get my feet under me," Thornton said after KU's 63-21 loss to Texas Tech at Memorial Stadium. "It's different when you only practice corner for three days and you've got to go out against the No. 1 offense in the country."
With hopes of an improvement from his secondary, KU coach Mark Mangino made quite a few changes to the unit Saturday.
One big switch was moving Thornton from safety to corner and Chris Harris from defensive back to safety.
"We had to do something. We're just really struggling at that position (cornerback)," Mangino said after the game. "Thornton has got quick feet and can play that position. Is that the ideal position for him? No, he's better at the free (safety), but I think our choices are somewhat limited in that area."
Thornton, a junior, hadn't played corner since high school. He had six tackles and two pass break-ups.
"It was a coaches' decision, and I'm just out there to do my best and contribute as much as I can," Thornton said. "I know all the assignments and everything at corner. I feel comfortable with all that. I know what I'm doing out there."
Daymond Patterson, originally a receiver and punt returner, also saw his first action of the year at cornerback. The speedy true freshman recorded one tackle.
"I kind of like him (there). He's young, and we just put him there this week," Mangino said. "I think he'll be OK. I do. I think if he'd been at that position for a few weeks, he would have helped us a little bit more today."
KU safety Darrell Stuckey was impressed with Patterson, especially considering his inexperience at the position.
"I didn't really notice him, so that means he did good," Stuckey said. "There wasn't a time I had to look at him and be like, 'Hey, come on, man.'
"It was a struggle sometimes getting the calls to him. Of course, he doesn't know all the signals or know all the specifics, ins and outs, but I think he did a pretty decent job out there for his first time."
KU linebacker James Holt said the team's plan on defense was to match Texas Tech's speed at the skill positions with quicker players on defense.
The switching didn't seem to do much good. The Red Raiders racked up 418 passing yards and scored on eight of their first nine possessions.
"Any time you put new people out there, confidence is always going to be an issue," Stuckey said. "You've got to give them time to settle. ... It's one of those things where we can't make excuses for switching people. It's one of those things where we've got to be a team regardless of what the adversities are."

Agree with you rockchalkblock, a strange time to make changes like that! Moreover, a major problem lies with the D Line's inability to get anywhere near Harrell this week and Bradford last week. No speed!

the secondary changes were a mistake for sure. they were not warranted, and were not doable. Thornton has NEVER played corner in college....and Harris hadn't played safety. Yes, they are both in the secondary...but totally different reads and coverages. Get Harper back out there, rotate in Barfield (what sin did he commit?) and Powell, and get back everybody back to where they belong. You develop kids...and if you live thru the tough times...and plan for the future. And if we had injuries, that's when you make these desperate moves. But not in the 2nd half of the season. We can beat K-State (which i figured would be a lock a few weeks ago) if we put everyone back where they were. Let's simplify the defense and get up the football field and hit #1 this Saturday a lot....Go Jayhawks!

I completely agree! Now is not the time to try to change everyone's skill position! Not against the #1 passing team in the country. I used to question if the defensive problem was with the personnel or the Bowen's schemes, but now I'm pretty convinced it's Bowen (not that I'm too thrilled with the personnel either). That's absolutely ridiculous! I understanding looking for a way to improve and find an edge, but not to put someone in a position that they haven't played in years since the high school level.By the way, wasn't it Powell who got burned all day (I know everyone did, but more than others)? Is he number 35?

What ever happened to Chris Harris being our next great CB?

Chris Harris is a great tackler that covers the flat really well, but in coverage he tends to be more of a hard hitter that tries to jar the ball loose rather than making a play on it in the air.Last year we were getting a better pass rush. It forced the QB to throw more short routes that played to Harris' strengths. Before everybody jumps on Bowen, consider that these quotes are from Mark Mangino, not Bowen. It sounds like he has stepped in to try and help Bowen fix the issues that we've seen all season.I don't think our secondary as it was last week was going to stop Tech, so the coaches might as well make some changes. We've seen Mangino do this before in past years when we were thin at some position. It usually takes a while for the players to get used to their new spot, but in the end it works out better than doing nothing.I think the players will be more comfortable in their new spots with this game under their belts.Consider this,If you have to make some changes, what other game would have been better for us to make them in?As ridiculous as it sounds, Tech was not a must win game for us to win the North. I think Mangino had an idea that we would probably get torched in this game, but that the returns on his investment may start to come in next week against K-State, and will get the players ready for two more big games in the North against Nebraska and Missouri. You hate to pretty much give up a game like we did yesterday, but I definitely see what Mangino is going for. You can't do the same thing over and over and expect to get different results, and there really isn't any other time in the season that would be better to make these changes.

I'm sorry, but the defense is lost. The players don't even fully realize how bad their performance has been the last two weeks. It's as though they're in denial. But they're college players, I'll cut them a little slack in interviews. My biggest problem: where are the quotes from Clint Bowen? Was he not even approached for responses? Was he shielded by Mangino?

When I saw that Young left after last year I was really down. Once you have something good, the right people, the chemistry, things just seem to fall in place. It is really hard to get that back. I kept watching for press releases about KU's new defensive guru and finally saw that it was an internal promotion and thought, Oh boy, here we go. My disappointment has exceeded my expectations. I mean we had 9 guys back on defense. I expected us to be as good as last year if not better. Momentum for a program is a powerful thing. Once you lose it it is very hard to get it back. Too much has been made of the pass rush. It is coverage that is an issue. We have enough talent. Last year it was said that the KU football team had a high football IQ. What happened? That is coaching, friends. Coach Young is sorely missed. We need someone with a lot more experience in charge of defense.

Our defense just flat-out sucks!!!!!How can we have such a HUGE drop-off from last year when we lose ONLY two starters?!?! I realize that McClinton was a great asset from a pass rush perspective, but come on!!! We lose an all-American DB, but come on!!! Our secondary is attrocious!!!!!

This is the worst defense I've seen in quite some time. I wouldn't be the least bit surprised to see us lose every game for the rest of the year and miss a bowl game. I know I'm being a negative nancy but that was the sorriest performance by a "ranked" football team that I have ever seen. Next weekend if we are to lose to KSU, we have officially hit rock bottom, and not reaching a bowl game after winning the Orange Bowl last year would be an absolute tragedy.

A tragedy that could very well happen. The defense hass been suspect all year. Mangino better take control or we are going to lose the remainder of the games.

KSU is a toss up. We will lose to nebraska. Then all the talking heads will want to talk about is the beginning of the Nebraska resurgance. F###, I thought we had them burried. NU will beat us and they will beat colorado. The end game is that they finish second in the North. We need to get our heads out of our asswes soon. Coach M needs to be told that he better get his defense together. He is too much of a nice guy. He is too frigin transparent. Lew needs to intervene. It is a money decision.

I actually think we'll squeeze out a win against KState and beat Nebraska in a shootout. But the Texas and Missouri games could get ugly, I hate to say it...We're just not as consistent on offense as we were last year, and of course we can't stop anyone on D. That's a lethal combo. Next year could be a good one, though, assuming some guys step it up.

Hawkish4bigM, I don't fully agree with you on D. It's more our pass rush than our D-backs. I'm not defending our D-back play but any QB in the country can pick any defense apart if they can just sit back and wait for their receivers to get open. I still see us winning next two weeks. We can beat NU.

It doesn't matter how many times you say it.You clowns will just never remember that Bill Young had the 119th ranked pass defense in the nation just 2 short years ago.The problem then1) No pass rush2) One good cornerback, but not two.Sounds pretty familar to me.

I agree with the d-line being the start of the problems...with all the spread offenses we see in the Big XII...the D-line has to find a way to disrupt the QB's timing. Even the best d-backs can only cover for so long against the spread.

It seems as if our D-line was recruited to stop and/or absorb the run, which was the MO for the old Big 12. It will take time for these guys to adopt and for us to recruit the necessary skilled players for the new Big 12. I agree with the majority however, this is absolutely not the right time for us be experimenting and changing the assignments of our defensive skilled players-particulary against the number one passing offense in the nation. I guess this is one of those chances coaches make that have the Sunday/Monday morning quaterbacks say, "he was a genious for doing that!" OR, "what was he thinking, that was *&^%&* stupid!!!"Heads up guys, all is not lost. We still believe!!! Play hard and shock the world.

JBurtin has hit the nail on the head. We have one good corner, although apparently we are trying to make him a safety. We have one good safety, but he can only help on half the field. Tech made a killing on Saturday by throwing away from Harris and Stuckey.

JBurtin has succeeded in changing my mind. I had agreed with the others that it was a strange time to make changes, but I think JBurtin makes an excellent point: that as awful as the game was, it's better to experiment against a team from the south than against the competition in the north. At least the players at new positions have had a week of experience now as they start facing the northern teams.
