It was supposed to be a close game, one that would leave the 50,000-plus spectators turning their heads back and forth as if watching a tennis match. They were supposed to be treated to a pair of great passing offenses. The last team to score wins. That sort of a game.

That game still might happen, but not until next weekend, when Kansas State brings its pass-happy offense and slapped-silly defense to Memorial Stadium for what suddenly seems like a tough game to forecast, the way Texas Tech-Kansas shaped up as a difficult call, at least until the second quarter arrived.

KU's 13-game homefield winning streak was going to end sometime, but did anyone really think it would be by a 63-21 score Saturday? Kansas quarterback Todd Reesing didn't think so. Why would he?

He never had been on the receiving end of anything like that.

"It is tough because you move the ball effectively on the first two drives and get two scores and are right there with them," Reesing said. "We figured we could do that all day. Then we lost momentum, lost focus or whatever it was."

The way the Red Raiders so easily scored on their first two drives, it was evident Reesing would have to work his magic again, keeping the less talented team in it, thriving when falling behind, feeding off the challenge.

Tech scored, Reesing tied it. Tech scored again, and Reesing responded again. By the end of the first quarter, Reesing had completed nine of 10 passes for 98 yards and two touchdowns and the scoreboard read Kansas 14, Texas Tech 14.

Then the rout was on, and most of those holding tickets didn't bother to stick around to watch it through to its brutal ending.

A junior, Reesing suffered through his toughest day as KU's quarterback, throwing for just 154 yards and tossing three interceptions.

Offered the excuse that the heat he faced from the defense could be blamed, at least in part, for his interceptions, Reesing wanted no part of it.

"I'm not sure it was the pressure they were putting on me," said Reesing, 17-4 as a starter at Kansas. "The first one was just a bad throw. Dexton (Fields) was open, and I was throwing on the run and just couldn't get a good ball out there to him. The next one, I was just unsure of what to do with the ball, and the guy made a good play. The last one was the same thing, the guy just made a good play. I've never had that happen to me in a lot of years of football to have back-to-back mistakes like that. Sometimes when things go bad, they can get real bad. You can't really sugar-coat that."

No sugar-coating just how superior the high-end Big 12 South teams are compared to the North, either. Their rosters are bigger, faster and deeper. That never was more evident than in a third quarter in which Kansas ran five offensive plays. The results: interception, Jake Sharp for no gain, interception, incomplete pass, interception.

The last visiting team to leave Memorial Stadium smiling about such a one-sided game was Kansas State, which bullied Kansas, 64-0, Nov. 2, 2002.

That won't be the score Saturday on the same field. Maybe 64-63, but certainly not 64-0.

I've been at every home game this year. As bad as the team played yesterday, I would have to say the home crowd was even WORSE.How can you have an undefeated Top 10 team come to town on Homecoming and not have a crowd that is geeked up? I swear going to KU games is like going to a polo match or a baseball game. The crowd has no football IQ whatsoever. When the opponent has the ball, there is no disruptive crowd noise until it's 3rd down. Then, if the other team strings together a few first downs, any hope of crowd noise disappears with the fickle KU fans. God forbid KU gets down by a couple of scores because then the "fans" start to head for the exits in droves.KU deserves better.

The problem is we stop running the ball. I guess for Werner 6 yards a carry isn't enough. Its a joke, and our defense is so horrible i think K-State can put up the kind of yardage OU did against us. They should just look at some film from last year (except MU game) and look at what they did well, try to do it in practice, and if it works against the offense, how can anyone stop it. Hell, we only lost 2 players on defense but we lost our weaknesses. We don't have a shut-down corner and our DTs are just blobs in the middle without Blakesly. and if they aren't going to play Patterson at WR, might as well make him a CB.

I also agree with the person above me...whats with the fans?!?!?!?! We have a decent team and we don't even make some noise when they are on defense. Where i sit, there only about 3 other ppl who make noise...its ridiculous!

I'd rather see KU man up on defense and get beat for a long TD once in a while than watch them lay 10 yards off in a zone and get picked apart for 10-15 yards per play down the whole field.

I agree with a lot of the comments I have seen. About the crowd: I have been to both KSU and KU games numerous times and the difference is amazing. I think the kinds of alum that KU has with public admin types, doctors, lawyers, (the scum of society) it is not proper deportment to get loud at football games. Maybe like the ancients used to hire mourners, KU should hire fans.Just kidding, but seriously the solution is the long-term improvement of the program that attracts more fans than alum. I suspect that is the big difference. I remember years ago KSU used to be similar at football games, just not as bad. I had to educate my best friend who was going there at the time that it was okay to yell. Let's face it, we the fanatics, are in the minority right now. Only time can change that. Now, on the defensive front I agree with man to man coverage, smacking players around, getting in their face and taking chances. If that is now what you are seeing, there is a coaching problem.

I agree it is time to man-up.We have given up almost 100 points in the last two games by laying back. We need to bring some blitz packages and be more disruptive on defense. I would rather give up 50 points per game by roughing up the quarterback than let him have all day to throw and pick us apart. We just don't have the personnel to give a quarterback 4 seconds to find a target.bring it on defense!!!!

It's sad when you're around a bunch of quiet fans that are sitting on their hands, and when you start jumping up and getting loud----everyone looks at you like you are either rude or nuts! It's sad being an outcast at your own team's game because you're being too loud..WTF?!?!? This is football people! Why don't we all at least stand up and yell a little? It pumps the team up!

Do they sell beer at the games? Of course, for KU it would have to be wine. That just might help.

Boys, yes our crowd could have been louder, but our defense took the crowd out of the game. Still, we are filling the stadium, which is a huge improvement over a few years ago.

If you are "present" but not present, it does no good. Filling a seat does not make you a fan. Being there is not "being there". Enough?

few comments. If you don't like lawyers and doctors just don't use them.If you want noise, it usually starts with the students. they were not making much. Sit close to them and you can feel at home making noise. The noise factor has risen 500% in the last 5 years, just in case you don't have a frame of reference. We couldn't even fill the stands unless there were red or purple people buying our tickets, even during the seasons of the great teams of 92 and 95. In 95 we were top 10 and only lost to NU and ksu. We have way more fans now and they are indeed noisier consistently. Perhaps not this game, but usually. On to the ku-ksu game. KU is ranked 88 in total defense. Ksu is ranked 109...that is 11 from last. We should not be stopped in this game! Not at all. And we should run over them with the run game, letting our o-line the the pounding work of run blocking. Pound them into the ground, playing like you want to be ranked. The extremely low defense rankings do remind me somewhat of the dog days of both schools, one time playing to a tie when both were the worst in college football. Many refer to that game as the toilet bowl. In think it was in 83, not sure. Fortunately our team is not that bad overall. It reminds me more of the "call the bomb squad" days of Frank Saurer and Mike Norseth, and their explosive offenses and penchant for throwing the bomb. Those were fun teams. I miss the 2005 defense...Reid, Kane, Floodman... bad. I would so like to throw that defense at ou and tech. There is no doubt who would win. That was the greatest D. Now I think you need to recruit about 8 safeties with the speed of cornerbacks each year.Time to forget everything else and whip KSUcks. You know their fans always felt it was a success if they beat KU. Same as MU. We should be plenty ready to make noise like Jayhawk fans. The team will be ready to get bowl eligible this week! I think the stink of the chiefs kind of tainted to fan pool, but we must rise to this occasion. There will be a lot to cheer about. We own this d... game!

"I'd rather see KU man up on defense and get beat for a long TD once in a while than watch them lay 10 yards off in a zone and get picked apart for 10-15 yards per play down the whole field."That is precisely the reason that changes were made to the defensive lineup.Thornton is the best player on our team at making plays on the ball. He tied Aqib Talib in interceptions last year, and he has quick enough feet to play corner. Harris is a good tackler, but not great at coverage, so they put him at safety. We played lots of man coverage in that game to free up our linebackers for blitzing. Unfortunately our linebackers were often mistiming their blitzes and would show them too early. This told Harrel and the rest of their offense exactly what they needed to know before the play ever started. Their backs did a great job of picking up the blitzers, and Harrel knew exactly who was most likely to be open.If he saw a blitz, he'd throw a quick slant;if he didn't see a blitz, he'd throw the bomb. Our linebackers had the same problem in 2006 and it bit us hard then too. For some reason they've gone back to old habits. I think they are all just too anxious to try and make a play, so they end up making a mistake that insures that they won't.If you're going to complain about the coaching, it would at least help if you knew something about what you are complaining about.

Hawkish4bigM,Wow. Clearly you aren't a doctor, lawyer, wine drinker or much of a thinker for that matter. I'll remind you that every college basketball analyst in the country will tell you that Allen Fieldhouse is one of the two most intimidating environments to play college hoops in. Granted, the student section helps that (as every student section around the country does), but don't kid yourself into believing that those of us who are non-students dont make noise at basketball games.Surely you've paid close enough attention to understand that with the price of men's basketball tickets (and the underlying point donations) that there are a lot of doctors, lawyers and businessmen in the crowd at men's home games. So please don't embarrass yourself by maintaining that just because you make more money in your career you cannot get loud at a sporting event.

LakeShawnee,I'm pretty sure Hawkish4bigM was talking about football! I think he/she & everyone on this site is aware of all the accomplishments our basketball team has made, and about how intimidating Allen Field House is to play in, for an opponent. Remember this is a football article, not basketball. Great comment!

Yes, of course Hawkish4bigM was talking about football. That is what this article is about. However, its not like our football fans are different people from our basketball fans. I think he/she is wrong in saying all KU grads/fans are snobs and dont know how to be loud when in fact they are VERY loud at other KU sporting events. Instead of saying KU fans sat on their hands last Saturday because we are wine & cheese snobs he/she should realize that we weren't sitting on our hands, we just had nothing to get loud about. Recall: their second play from scrimmage was a touchdown pass. Recall: the only time we stopped their offense in the first half was their last drive before halftime, and that was only because Tech ran out of time to score on us again.

Now now...dont get down on the home crowd. Like the Mizzu sign said last year "KU football, a tradition since September". Having a decent team is new, you gotta work into this thing. Once you recruit a few dozen more Texas kids you'll see what its all about. And then you schedule homecoming against the Mighty South?? Iowa State...that is homecoming.

But I suppose you're the exception to a fan, right? I guess my family is the exception to both. They consist of doctor's and lawyers who GASP! are honest people that serve the public interest, and they've been getting season tickets next to the student body for at least four decades. On top of that, they drive halfway across Kansas for every single football and basketball game, including the ones on weeknights. We and the student body were cheering our throats sore up until Reesing threw 3 interceptions in about 5 plays. Funny how that quiets a crowd down. And yet we stayed till the end. But we weren't waving the wheat, as someone else mentioned (KU has to actually score for the crowd to be able to do that). And afterwards, we went back down to our tailgate to down some cheap beer and BBQ.I'm not kidding and I am serious. Your comment was very naive. All the fans that quieted down and then left had every right to do so. There just wasn't much left to cheer for. Also keep in mind that there is no drinking in the stadium.

I'm old enough to remember what KU powerhouse football looked like (Hadl, McClinton, Coan et al.) Throughout the 50's KU was a dominant football power. One season does not dominance make. Just another lawyer chiming in and waiting for Nov. 4.
