Each week during the University of Kansas’ sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.

For the week of May 4-10, the selections are Anthony Meacham and Ava Wallace.

Anthony Meacham, track and field

After resetting KU’s pole-vault record by clearing 5.81 meters at the Rock Chalk Classic in Lawrene, the senior from Woodsboro, Texas, became the first men’s athlete ever to win three weekly Big 12 awards during a single outdoor season.

Ava Wallace, softball

The sophomore outfielder had the biggest single swing in KU’s 6-5 comeback victory over UCF at the Big 12 tournament when she sent a 1-1 pitch over the wall for her third home run of the year, a two-run shot that cut the Jayhawks’ deficit to one. The game also included just her fifth walk of the season.
