By Journal-World Sports Staff     May 17, 2026

Each week during the University of Kansas’ sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.

For the week of May 11-17, the selections are Will King and Emmah Jemutai.

Will King, men’s golf

On Monday, King was named the Big 12’s scholar-athlete of the year for the second consecutive season. The Jayhawks’ “number one player and team leader,” as head coach Jamie Bermel calls him, is also a 4.0 student who majors in molecular, cellular, and developmental biology.

Emmah Jemutai, track and field

The junior from Eldoret, Kenya, shone as bright as anyone at the Big 12 Outdoor Championship in Tucson, Arizona, where on Saturday she won conference titles in both the 800-meter and 1,500-meter runs, with times of two minutes, 5.90 seconds and four minutes, 9.66 seconds, respectively.
