Each week during the University of Kansas’ sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of Jan. 19-25, the selections are Elmarko Jackson and Ryan Johnston.
Elmarko Jackson, men’s basketball
With Darryn Peterson out with an ankle injury, the redshirt sophomore Jackson stepped up in KU’s 86-62 rivalry win at Kansas State on Saturday night. He scored a career-high 19 points off the bench, with two 3-pointers and 7-for-7 shooting at the free-throw line, plus five rebounds.
Ryan Johnston, swimming and diving
One of numerous standouts in the Jayhawks’ 163-137 victory over Arkansas on Friday — their first against the Razorbacks in six years — Johnston, a junior from Denver, was part of the 200-yard medley relay team that tied the facility record at one minute, 39.58 seconds. She then went on to claim individual wins in the 100- and 200-yard breaststroke (at 1:00.89 and 2:12.72, respectively). The 100-yard time was her lifetime best.
