Each week during the University of Kansas’ sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of Feb. 9-15, the selections are Mathis Nayral and Alice Lindgren Engelblom.
Mathis Nayral, baseball
The French pitcher, a JUCO transfer from Cochise College, helped KU earn its first win of the season on Saturday at UTRGV. Nayral pitched seven innings and allowed one run on two hits and no walks, setting up the Jayhawks for a 10-3 victory.
Alice Lindgren Engelblom, track and field
On a split-squad weekend for the KU indoor track and field teams, Lindgren Engelblom earned her first collegiate victory at the Ichabod Invite in Topeka. The freshman from Stockholm, Sweden, won the women’s long jump with a personal-best mark of 6.18 meters.
