Each week during the University of Kansas’ sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of April 13-19, the selections are Luke Honner and Mason Meinershagen.
Luke Honner, men’s golf
Honner, a senior from Sioux Falls, South Dakota, who began his career at South Dakota State, posted his best performance as a Jayhawk during the weekend’s Hoosier Collegiate Invitational in Indiana. He shot a 1-over 214 in three rounds to tie for second and help lead KU to the team title, which was its first of the season.
Mason Meinershagen, women’s track and field
The junior pole vaulter from St. Louis broke her own school record in the event by clearing 4.57 meters on Saturday at the Bryan Clay Invitational in Azusa, California. She became the first woman in NCAA history to reach marks of both 15 feet in the pole vault and 6 feet in the high jump.
