Each week during the University of Kansas’ winter and spring sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of March 17-23, the selections are Kannon Carr and Kori Randle.
Kannon Carr, baseball
A junior out of Jefferson College who started KU’s season coming out of the bullpen, Carr made a Saturday night start on the road and helped the Jayhawks snap a three-game losing streak by going seven innings — he had pitched 17 combined in eight prior appearances — while allowing three earned runs on five hits and a walk.
Kori Randle, track and field
Randle started her outdoor career with the Jayhawks in style. She had been a North Carolina state champion in the long jump and triple jump in high school, and in her outdoor debut at KU she jumped 6.19 meters to take first place at the Jayhawk Spring Fling at Rock Chalk Park on Saturday.
