Each week during the University of Kansas’ winter and spring sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of March 3-9, the selections are Hunter Dickinson and Olivia Bruno.
Hunter Dickinson, men’s basketball
Dickinson turned in one of the best performances of his career in his final game at Allen Fieldhouse, racking up a career-high 33 points on 15-for-23 shooting to go with 10 rebounds. It was his second game with 30-plus points in the span of 12 days and came one night after head coach Bill Self challenged him in a team meeting to carry the Jayhawks down the stretch.
Olivia Bruno, softball
The senior Topeka native played a key two-way role in KU’s first conference victory on the road at Baylor on Saturday. She hit the first-inning two-run home run that included the Jayhawks’ only two RBIs of the afternoon in a 3-2 result, and also served as the winning pitcher, allowing two earned runs in 6 2/3 innings in the circle.
