Each week during the University of Kansas’ winter and spring sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of Jan. 20-26, the selections are Rylan Griffen and Gracie Mulville.
Rylan Griffen, men’s basketball
The transfer from Alabama played his best offensive game as a Jayhawk in KU’s double-overtime loss to Houston on Saturday. Griffen scored a season-high 17 points as he connected on five 3-pointers, four of which came with eight minutes left in the second half or later.
Gracie Mulville, tennis
Playing at both No. 1 singles and No. 1 doubles for the Jayhawks, Mulville didn’t drop a set during KU’s 3-0 weekend to open the spring. In singles, she beat her Kansas City opponent 6-2, 6-2; her Creighton match went unfinished when she was leading 6-3, 4-1; and her Iowa match went down as a 7-5, 6-3 victory. In doubles, she partnered with Heike Janse van Vuuren for 6-1, 7-5 and 6-3 victories.
