Each week during the University of Kansas’ winter and spring sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of Jan. 13-19, the selections are Zeke Mayo and Emmaculate Jemutai.
Zeke Mayo, men’s basketball
The Lawrence native has been KU’s most reliable perimeter scoring option throughout the season, and this past week he turned in both his best road performance of the year (17 points in a loss to Iowa State) and a memorable Sunflower Showdown debut (24 points with four first-half 3-pointers in the victory over Kansas State). He is now averaging 15 points per game through 17 contests after transferring from South Dakota State during the offseason.
Emmaculate Jemutai, track and field
The sophomore distance runner from Eldoret, Kenya, was the top scorer on the women’s side of KU’s triangular meet against K-State and Wichita State. She won the 800-meter and 1-mile runs with times of two minutes, 10.96 seconds and four minutes, 51.29 seconds, respectively. The Jayhawks finished in first place in the women’s event, which took place in Manhattan.
