Each week during the University of Kansas’ winter and spring sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of Jan. 6-12, the selections are a pair of sophomores in KU baseball ace Dominic Voegele and diver Shiyun Lai.
Dominic Voegele, baseball
Voegele became the first KU baseball player ever to receive preseason All-American honors from Perfect Game, it was announced Tuesday. The sophomore from Columbia, Illinois, a second-team selection, is in line to serve as the Jayhawks’ Friday night starter for the 2025 season after accumulating a 3.89 ERA in 81 innings pitched during his freshman campaign.
Shiyun Lai, swimming and diving
KU fell to Houston 215.5-84.5 in its dual meet on Saturday, but Lai provided KU a pair of victories with her first-place finishes in the 1- and 3-meter dives. Lai has already earned a pair of Big 12 diver of the week honors during the 2024-25 season.
