Each week during the University of Kansas’ winter and spring sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of Feb. 3-9, the selections are Anthony Meacham and Kaelee Washington.
Anthony Meacham, track and field
The junior from Woodsboro, Texas, one key member of KU’s potent men’s pole vault group, cleared a personal-best 5.57 meters at the Steve Miller invite in Manhattan on Friday.
Kaelee Washington, softball
The freshman from Topeka, who attended Santa Fe Trail High School, came ready to play in her first weekend of college softball. She appeared in four of KU’s five games at its season-opening event in Boca Raton, Florida, and allowed just two runs on six hits in 9 2/3 innings of action.
