Each week during the University of Kansas’ winter and spring sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of April 14-20, the selections are Alex Breckheimer and Ebba Cronholm.
Alex Breckheimer, baseball
In a big week for a slew of Jayhawks as KU went 4-0 against in-state foes, “Breck” was one of the standouts in relief. The 6-foot-5, 270-pound fireballing closer from Chilton, Wisconsin, allowed just one hit and zero walks in three combined appearances for a total of four scoreless innings. He earned saves in KU’s first and second victories over Kansas State. His ERA is now down to 3.08 on the season.
Ebba Cronholm, women’s track and field
Cronholm, who also plays on the women’s soccer team, competed in the 1,500-meter run for the first time as a collegian and finished in first place at the Kansas Relays with a time of four minutes, 24.25 seconds.
