Recruiting updates on Marques Bolden, Thon Maker and Jarrett Allen

— Marques Bolden, a 6-foot-10 senior forward from DeSoto (Texas) High, who is ranked No. 16 in the recruiting Class of 2016 by, has visited KU, Kentucky, Duke and Oklahoma, and also has TCU on his list.

Bolden has said immediate playing time is a huge factor. ...

• Jarrett Allen, a 6-9 senior forward from St. Stephens Episcopal School in Austin, Texas, recently told recruiting analyst Evan Daniels he is not close to a decision.

Allen has visited KU, Houston, Notre Dame and Kentucky, and is still considering Texas and perhaps others.

• Thon Maker, a 7-foot senior center from Orangeville Prep in Mono, Ontario, is planning on visiting St. John’s, Arizona State, Kansas, Indiana and Notre Dame.

ASU recently received a commitment from Class of 2017 forward Daniel Mading, who is Maker’s cousin. That shouldn’t affect Maker’s decision, considering he is an almost certain one-and-done.

Maker hopes to hear from the NCAA Clearinghouse about his chances of being eligible by April.

Maker has said he won’t attend college if his status is up in the air.

NCAA, pay heed. Recruits are beginning to see how many good players your dallying is hurting and they will not put themselves through that.

I rarely read these, and I wish I hadn't read this one. If that's not the most depressing recruiting update I've ever seen..... One guy wants guaranteed playing time, one guy has no idea what he thinks and one guy wants a package deal.

Meanwhile, somewhere there are some extremely talented 3-5 star recruits who would love to come to KU, and who could help us win a championship in their sophomore, junior and - yes I'll say it - senior years.

Rodney Crain 6 years, 11 months ago

Not for next year. The 3-5 stars are mostly gone.

We might get one of the few remaining but it looks like we will need to find help from some lesser known international players or grad transfers. Been a very poor year for us considering how many recruits in the top 20 and top 100 signed early.

Agree this is a very weak update. Maybe Bolden, maybe.

Not a big fan of Thon Maker.

Bolden may go to TCU if his main thought is PT. The OAD is such a trap sometimes. I mean how many are really "that" good? Ten a year? How many rely on the juniors and seniors to make it possible to be effective? I was on the Thon comet tail but now it is another, I'll be great, maybe. The 2017 center Ayton is strong towards KU but who knows.

No reason to be depressed, Brett. Given that Diallo is likely to come back for year 2, we really only need one quality post commit to replace the Mickleson/Traylor committee. Good news is, Lucas is starting to shape up as a decent bench option for next year. I'd expect sophomores Bragg and Diallo to start next season. Add Allen, Azibuike, or Bolden and we're golden with Coleby for depth.

Maybe Jarrett Allen. We have a solid shot for him. Bolden at the 5 would get a lot of PT at KU but Self rightly says "NO" to guaranteed PT.

Here is a list of players who KU offered scholarships for 2016:

Now THAT is depressing.

For people who have been concerned that the Maker recruitment would be a replay of the Diallo situation, Ive been saying for a while now that it wouldnt be. The information has been available for a while now that Maker would not attend college if his status for eligibility would be unknown. If there is any fear at all in recruiting Maker, it is whether or not Coach Self can get him to produce in one year's time. It's not a knock on Coach Self to say Cal and Coach Konsonants do that a bit better. Yes...Self can do it. Embiid is the proof. It's just not very common.
