Norman, Okla. KU junior Travis Releford hurt his shoulder in the second half. He left the game for a minute or so before returning.
“I went body-to-body with one of their players. It was a stinger,” he said. “I got it checked and went right back in.”
Flagrant foul: Jordan Juenemann clipped James Fraschilla with an elbow late in the game. Juenemann was whistled for a flagrant foul. Juenemann was not ejected from the game by the refs, but Self removed the senior guard from the contest.
KU’s Oklahoma pros can’t attend: Former KU and Free State High guard Brady Morningstar, who is a first-year player with the NBA Development League’s Tulsa 66ers, had a home game against Maine on Saturday, thus was unable to attend the KU-OU contest in nearby Norman.
Morningstar, who has started eight of 14 games, averages 11.3 points, 2.3 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 30.5 minutes per outing.
Overall, he has hit 57 of 141 shots for 40.4 percent. He’s made 12 of 37 threes for 32.4 percent. He’s also cashed 32 of 37 free throws for 86.5 percent.
Former KU big men Cole Aldrich and Nick Collison of the Oklahoma City Thunder also were not able to attend the KU game.
The Thunder, who had a home game against Houston on Friday, played at Houston on Saturday night.
Veteran Collison is averaging 5.6 points and 3.5 rebounds while logging an average of 19.9 minutes in eight games. Second-year pro Aldrich has averaged 4.0 minutes a game in four games. He has scored two points and has three boards total.
Tubbs in the house: Former OU coach Billy Tubbs attended and spoke to the fans before the game.
“Sooner nation: Let’s be loud today. Are you ready? Lights, please,” he said as the arena lights were darkened for introductions.
Producing points: Future KU guard Conner Frankamp exploded for 47 points in Wichita North’s 61-56 overtime victory over Wichita South on Friday.

No worries on Frankamp's defense. He is much quicker and more disciplined than Jimmer on the defensive end of the court. If he can bring Jimmer's offense, he will be an All-American. KU hasn't had a shooter like Frankamp in a long, long time. 47 points and he was double- and triple-teamed all night, even on the perimeter. He is impressive.

The stinger on Releford's shoulder came as a result of a well-placed elbow. Just saying. That one was not reviewed for the benefit of the broadcasting crew either. It was just intended to hurt a key player.

Met Conner for the first time last week. He's got a great head on his shoulders... he just needs more shoulder! Very small upper body and he'll need some time with Hudy in order to achieve at the D1 level. I see it happening. Very focused and quality young man! Can't wait to see him develop as a Hawk!

Don't touch.......I repeat don't touch that shooting arm, Hudy! Touch everything else just don't touch that shooting arm. It's platinum!

Juenemann couldn't help that foul. The kid is so short that he was below elbow level without trying and got in the way of an elbow. Nothing flagrant about it.

Well, it wasn't enough to be thrown out of the game, but it was a Flagrant one foul (Intentional Foul) by rule.
That rule isn't going anywhere either. Flying elbows are part of the game, but they will either be a violation (No contact), Flagrant 1-Intentional Foul (Unintentional contact but excessive contact) or Flagrant 2-Technical Foul (Intentional contact and unsporting conduct).

This rule change really upsets me. As a MS BB coach it is one of the basic fundamentals of BB that I try to teach. Every time Cole Aldrich got a defensive rebound, he could have been called for this. All a defensive player has to do is stick his face in the area, and create contact, and the player with the ball will be called for the foul. We had a similar thing in the KSU game on spradling. The next time down the floor, Spradling did the same move, only no contact was made with the d player. How the he!! is a player (who has the ball on his right side) supposed to drive to his left? If he brings the ball across his body, the d player can just slap it out of his hands.

He scored 47 of their 61 points? Seriously? Was anyone else playing?

The thing I don't understand about this elbow rule is, why not warn the victims? I'm going to show my age here, but when I played, players simply wouldn't stick their face right up in a guy's kitchen. It's just stupid. Now I see players trying to get elbowed and showing how proud they are that they got that call. It's counter productive. Yes, a flagrant elbow is potentially a huge injury, but when a player has his face in your arm pit, and your arm happens to bend at the elbow, how do you turn around without bumping him? Players are getting called for hitting other players with their triceps because these guys are literally sticking out their necks. I'm reminded of the scene from Field Of Dreams: "Hey Ump, how about a warning." "You're right, kid, watch out you don't get hurt."
