New Kansas point guard Remy Martin to wear No. 11 during 2021-22 season

Remy Martin, as depicted in this graphic put out by the Kansas Basketball Twitter account after he announced he was returning to school for the 2021-22 season, will wear No. 11 with the Jayhawks.

Tuesday’s news that KU guard [Ochai Agbaji][1] and [Remy Martin][2] were withdrawing their names from the NBA draft pool brought with it the finalization of KU’s roster online.

It also revealed that Martin will be changing numbers for his lone season with the Jayhawks.

After wearing No. 1 for four years at Arizona State, Martin is changing to No. 11 at Kansas.

We have yet to talk with Martin about his decision to stay in school, but it seems possible that he chose his new number for the same reason that another KU newcomer, shooting guard Jalen Coleman-Lands, elected to move from No. 5 to No. 55.

This spring, Coleman-Lands said he was moving to No. 55 to “double down and double up” for his last season of college ball.

In choosing No. 11, Martin will be following in the footsteps of a couple of the greatest point guards in KU history. Jacque Vaughn and Aaron Miles both wore 11 when they ran the show for the Jayhawks. Josh Jackson, Mark Turgeon, Bill Lienhard and Otto Schnellbacher also wore the number during their KU playing days.

Martin’s move from No. 1 to No. 11 also brings to mind the move made by former KU point guard Devon Dotson between his freshman and sophomore seasons at Kansas.

Back then, Dotson moved from No. 11 to No. 1, going the opposite direction that Martin is going today.

The move for Dotson was to get back to the number he had worn his entire life. Dedric Lawson wore No. 1 during Dotson’s freshman season, making the number unavailable in Year 1.

A quick Internet search of Martin’s basketball past reveals that No. 1 has been Martin’s primary number all the way back to his prep days at Sierra Canyon in California.

He did also wear No. 3 with his Oakland Soldiers EYBL squad, but also wore No. 1 with the Phoenix Phamily EYBL team.

After committing to KU in mid-May, Martin told the Journal-World that he did not have much of a relationship with any current Jayhawks and that he was eager to get started building those from the ground floor.

After spending the past couple of months in Las Vegas preparing for the NBA draft, Martin likely will head to Lawrence to get started with his new teammates sometime in the next couple of weeks.
