The Kansas baseball team fell short on Sunday in its effort to pick up a key Big 12 series victory against Oklahoma.
KU lost Sunday’s game 7-4, and lost the series against the Sooners 2-1.
KU fell behind by five runs in the first inning. The Jayhawks tried to bounce back with two runs in the second on a two-run home run by redshirt sophomore Michael Brooks. But KU couldn’t keep the momentum. The Sooners put the game away by the third inning when they went up 7-2
Ethan Bradford took the loss for KU. His record fell to 2-5 for the season. Brooks’ home run in the second was his fourth of the season.
KU now is 6-12 in Big 12 Conference play, and sits eighth in the standings in the nine team conference. The weekend series was a chance for KU to gain valuable ground on OU, which finished the weekend with a 9-9 conference record.
The Jayhawks, however are within striking distance of a several Big 12 teams above them. KU is just one win behind TCU and three wins behind both Texas Tech and Oklahoma.
But Kansas will have its work cut out for it to make up any ground. The Jayhawks have two Big 12 series left, and the’ll likely have to do some damage in a series this week with Texas . KU and Texas square off Friday, Saturday and Sunday in Lawrence. The Longhorns are fourth in the conference with a 10-7 record.
KU finishes Big 12 regular season play against Texas Tech, which currently sits at 9-9 in Big 12 play.
Up first for the Jayhawks, though, is a cross border showdown. KU on Tuesday will travel to Columbia to take on Missouri in a 6 p.m. contest that will be broadcast on the SEC network. KU comes into the game 21-23 overall, while Missouri has a record of 24-19 overall, but is just 5-16 in SEC conference play. KU in March lost to the Tigers at Kauffman Stadium 8-3.
