The KU women’s rowing team took sixth place in the seven-team Big 12 Championships this weekend in Austin, Texas.

At the boat level, KU took a second-place finish in the level 3, eight-team boat competition. KU’s boat of Rylee Crowell, Mara Evans, Jadyn Jay, Taylor Lindberg, Emma Steiner, Gracyn Rains, Melia Martin, Laine Draper and Riley Shoots edged Tennessee for second place, finishing only behind Texas.

Texas won the league championship, which features a handful of Big 12 schools, but also includes SEC universities Alabama and Tennessee. Kansas finished just ahead of West Virginia, and just behind Kansas State.

KU also won a third place medal with its level 1, four-team boat. That group of Danielle Brunig, Grace Wallrapp, Ava Black, Kara Lyons and Jacie Goff finished third to Texas and Tennessee.

After the league championships, Kansas freshman Katia Ustiuzhanina, from Kviv, Ukraine, was named to the Big 12 all-league team. She was one of only two freshmen named to the squad.

KU’s coaches said they believe the upcoming crop of rowers for KU will be strong.

“We had good focus and executed much closer to our potential,” KU coach Carrie Cook-Callen said after the final meet. “Our upperclassmen provided good leadership, and our newer athletes raced really maturely. We are poised for a great next season.”
