Each week during the University of Kansas’ winter and spring sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of May 12-18, the selections are Dominic Voegele and Emmaculate Jemutai.
Dominic Voegele, baseball
KU’s ace lived up to billing on Thursday and set the tone for a dominant three days in Morgantown, West Virginia, for the Jayhawks’ pitching staff, in which they only allowed five combined runs. Voegele, for his part, gave up none at all in seven innings, allowing six hits and zero walks and preventing the Mountaineers’ potent offense from gaining any significant traction in a 3-0 victory for KU.
Emmaculate Jemutai, track and field
The sophomore from Eldoret, Kenya, won the Big 12 title in the women’s 1,500 meters with her time of four minutes, 8.60 seconds, which was also a meet record and KU record. As if that wasn’t enough, she set a second school record when she finished third in the 800 meters at 2:01.83 later on Saturday.
