Each week during the University of Kansas’ winter and spring sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of April 7-13, the selections are Gunnar Broin and Kyoka Kubo.
Gunnar Broin, men’s golf
Through two rounds of the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa, on Sunday, Broin had shot back-to-back 5-under 67s to lead the individual field at 10-under, helping the Jayhawks to an overall team lead as well.
Kyoka Kubo, tennis
In KU’s resounding Sunflower Showdown victory on Sunday, the Japanese sophomore Kubo claimed victories in doubles, partnering with Anna Putilina to take down Kansas State’s Veronika Kulhava and Tereza Polakova by a score of 6-2, and in singles, where she beat Kulhava 6-2, 6-2.
