Kansas hadn’t lost to Colorado College in its history in four tries and it certainly didn’t buck that trend Sunday.
The Jayhawks poured in three goals in each half, with junior Raena Childers scoring her first career brace along the way, and stayed unbeaten in nonconference play with a 6-0 win at Rock Chalk Park.
KU sent 25 shots at the Tigers’ goal, including 13 on target. Magali Gagné and Lexi Watts led the way with four shots each for the Jayhawks, but Childers, Hallie Klanke, Brie Severns and Avery Smith all scored, after a Colorado College own goal had opened the floodgates in the seventh minute.
“The group is playing well and I think this is going to give us a lot of confidence heading into next week,” head coach Mark Francis said in a press release.
A well-placed cross from Klanke looking for Watts instead bounced off the head of defender Emma Smith, and the Tigers’ keeper Regan Wallace couldn’t corral the ball, allowing KU to take an early lead. Klanke got her first of two assists just moments later when she got Wallace in an awkward position and passed to Brie Severns, who couldn’t line up a shot right away but forced the ball in from the ground while battling with Tiger defenders, thus scoring her first goal since last year’s season-ending injury.
The Jayhawks extended their lead to 3-0 on a long-distance lob from Klanke in the 20th minute, then settled for a quiet remainder of the first half, including two saves from keeper Melania Pasar.
KU then scored its last three goals in the final 21 minutes, including the pair for Childers and Smith’s header off a Moira Kelley free kick.
The Jayhawks will continue their four-game homestand when they take on Arkansas State on Thursday.
