Game balls and gassers: KU vs. Rhode Island

Game Balls

Midway through the first quarter, defensive lineman Daniel Wise came back to the play and reached out to grab a Rhode Island ball carrier, which gave Damani Mosby time to poke the ball out and force KU’s second takeaway of the day.

LaQuovionte Gonzalez’s touchdown grab midway through the second quarter showed that the KU junior is much more than just a burner as he leapt and reached back over the defender to snag an under-thrown ball from Ryan Willis.

Tyrone Miller’s pass interference penalty early in the second quarter not only negated a Tevin Shaw interception, but also kept alive Rhode Island’s first scoring drive. Later in the quarter, Miller was flagged for an unsportsmanlike conduct penalty following a Bazie Bates interception.

Montell Cozart spoiled a great night with one bad decision late in the third quarter. With the Jayhawks knocking on the door for more points, Cozart tried to force a throw to an open receiver in the back of the end zone by rifling it between two Rhode Island defenders. It didn’t even get by the first and was easily intercepted.

If we are going to spotlight the kids for gassers, let's put the coaches in there too....

Delay of game on first snap of the game....Ineptitude on the 4th and 1 when we couldn't get a play called.....Not giving Neal another chance to catch a punt after the fumble....

Ashwin Rao 5 years, 11 months ago

Wasn't the 4th & 1 situation with too many men on the field?

Brett McCabe 5 years, 11 months ago

We had 12 men on the field after a timeout was used, after we couldn't get the play in. It was actually worse than what I wrote...

Damian Glaze 5 years, 11 months ago

We called two timeouts before the illegal substitution penalty, then missed the field goal. Can't happen.

Jay Scott 5 years, 11 months ago

Yes Brett.... We all get that you hate Beaty because he doesn't play your favorite guys enough. Those of us that coached remember the nutcase parents like you.....

Brett McCabe 5 years, 11 months ago

Stalk much? How'd "we" get that I hate Beaty? Because you said so? Sorry, that doesn't fly.

Beaty went 0-12 last year, but I believe he is the right guy for this job. However, everybody has to Earn It, including the coaches.

Brett... I like to mock people who make comically stupid comments.

It just happens that you're far and away the best source.

Jay Scott 5 years, 11 months ago

.... the best source of stupid comments.. .. and also the person with the least self control.

Micky Baker 5 years, 11 months ago

Jay, you are stalking him. How about posting some input of your own if you don't agree with Brett, or are your comments really not that intelligent?

Jay Scott 5 years, 11 months ago

I don't have an endless list of things to nitpick and whine about, because I trust the coaching staff to decide who should play, unlike our little friend.

With all due respect Mick, my mocking of infantile Chicken Littles is fairly well documented and evenly distributed based on content.

Brett just happens to be the perpetual poster child for all that is Chicken Little.

Micky Baker 5 years, 11 months ago

You're not helping yourself here. You can post your input, even if it isn't what someone else agrees with or that someone else might think is a dumb comment. You can have your opinion too, but you have to have to courage to post it about the team.

Jay Scott 5 years, 11 months ago

Being a Chicken Little takes "courage"? Right...

Bryce Landon 5 years, 11 months ago

Setting that aside, the fact that he has a Hill-Rod avatar is reason enough to mock him.

Dirk Medema 5 years, 11 months ago

All stalking aside, you forgot to mention the delay of game to start the game. To start the game. Thought for sure you would have had a comment about the QB's on the sidelines playing rock-paper-scissor to decide who would start.

That was scary inept IMO. Reminded me of a previous regime/TG, but at least their's was in the middle of the game after a timeout or something like that in their first year. This definitely is not me hating on the coaches, but calling a spade black. Can't think a a bigger possible gasser.

Micky Baker 5 years, 11 months ago

I probably should have been a gasser on the player who wasn't supposed to be in on the play. Someone wasn't paying attention during the second timeout. I don't have a problem with the two timeouts being used. They did come out in a different set after the first timeout after seeing what RI was in. I think the second timeout that late in the half when you don't get to carry it over was perfectly fine.

Ashwin Rao 5 years, 11 months ago

I believe Stanley's two throws were accurate & beautifully thrown. He definitely has some potential. The top 2 QBs had some bad throws to start off with, but at the end, Cozart seemed to throw much better!

Brett McCabe 5 years, 11 months ago

Agreed that Stanley looked good. It will be interesting to watch as he develops.

Things to make a KU fan smile 1) the recievers showed great separation and ball catching skills. Made all of the QB's look good. Hope this translates into BigXII games. 2) the offensive line kept a clean pocket for most of the game. 3) the running backs rarely were stopped by the first contact. Tough running. Very exciting - coach just needs not to forget the running game during future BigXII games where controlling the clock will be important to keep the scores closer. 4) defensive backs looked faster and for the most part covered well. Bates' interception was impressive. 5) kick offs and coverage on punts and kickoffs was great. Things that could be a concern to KU fans when the competition improves. 1) the middle of the defense line looked porous. Too many, 5, 7, 8 yard runs between the guards. If this had been a more competitive game, URI could have amassed a lot more rushing yards. Last year they averaged less than 100 yards a game and nearly doubled that last night. 2) personnel and clock management. Delay of game on the first possession. Illegal substitution after two consecutive time outs by KU, potentially contributing to missed field goal.

Overall a fun night and thank you students for listening to the announcer indicating this is the begginning of a new era of KU football under Beaty and leaving the posts alone.

Richard Duran 5 years, 11 months ago

You are spot on. the defense should not have been gouged the way they were. They better get that solved PDQ or the BIG12 won't have to throw on us!

David Robinett 5 years, 11 months ago

Special teams not there yet - missed FG and I believe extra point. Muffed punt reception. All the things that tear at we, the ever faithful.

Seriously, after the hole these coaches accepted and the progress made in about one year...there is criticism of the 55 points put up Saturday?

We could have easily scored 72, and last year we couldn't score against air.

Yes, BTW it was Rhode Island...the school that beat Paul Pierce and Raef LaFrentz in 1998 in basketball.

If you can't see the difference, objectively, in the talent on the field vs. the prior regimes, then you're blind or just want to criticize.

As a supporter of the program for over forty years, I am very excited with direction the program is headed.
