Bob Valesente: 1986-87

By Staff     Sep 9, 2002

In December of 1985 KU athletic director Monte Johnson moved quickly to name assistant coach Bob Valesente to replace his outgoing boss, Mike Gottfried.

The career assistant had been toiling under head coaches at six colleges, dating back to 1962 and spent 1982-83 as secondary coach with the Baltimore Colts.

Just as his predecessor was hired by an incoming athletic director trying to shake up the program, Valesente was fired by incoming AD Bob Frederick seeking to put his stamp on the program.

Under Valesente’s leadership, the team compiled a 4-17-1 record and the Jayhawks failed to win a Big Eight game in 14 tries, and won only one game against a major college team (Utah State in 1986).
