Kevin Young earns top billing in season-opener

1. Kevin Young: Had three of KU’s 12 dunks and in just 14 minutes stuffed the box score with 13 points, seven rebounds, two assists, two blocked shots and two steals.

2. Thomas Robinson: Needs to learn that avoiding technicals is more important than getting the last word. Also, his coach said he’s trying but hasn’t gotten the hang of understanding that the best way to stay out of foul trouble is to guard his man before he catches the ball. Still, he contributed 18 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, two steals and a blocked shot. Showed some guard skills handling the ball on the break and punctuating it with a terrific pass for an easy inside bucket.

3. Elijah Johnson: Made just 2 of 7 three-point shots, but other than that had a terrific night. Kept the ball moving and had eight assists, no turnovers and three steals.

4. Tyshawn Taylor: Never tried to force it and contributed 12 points and four assists with just one turnover.

5. Travis Releford: Had just one rebound in 25 minutes, but otherwise played well with 14 points, three assists and two steals.

6. Conner Teahan: His jumper is a thing of beauty. Made 3 of 4 three-pointers and had three steals and four boards on an 11-point night.

7. Naadir Tharpe: Smart offensive player for a freshman. Had six points and four assists and didn’t turn it over. He, Johnson and Taylor combined for 16 assists and one turnover.

8. Jeff Withey: The No. 1 culprit in KU losing the battle of the boards, Withey had more rebounds on his own misses than on Towson’s misses. Had just one defensive board in 18 minutes, but did have 10 points, four blocks and three assists.

9. Justin Wesley: Had six points but just one rebound in 16 minutes.

10. Merv Lindsay: Logged a minute.

I know this is nitpicking, but why does Lindsay get the 10th spot for having "logged a minute"? Juenemann logged 4 minutes and scored the bucket to get the score to 100. I know it's a small thing, but Juenemann should have gotten it over Lindsay.

As per the old Keegan ratings rules, only scholarship players are eligible for the ratings.

Put him on a scholie. Then, no need to split straws.

I'm sorry, but I don't see the logic in that. It's not like he's on JV or something. He's a full member of the team. His stats count just like anyone else. Maybe if he were to earn some points on the Keegan Rankings, people might start to take notice of his value and contribution to the team.

Come on, Tom, it'd be no skin off your nose. Do the right thing! Besides, the 9th or 10th spot might be difficult to fill this season with our thin lineup.

Well, "old rules" become an issue the first night that a walk-on scores in double figs...not that this post-game fanalytical fluff matters...

Most promising stat: 3 lead guards (TT, EJ, Naadir) combine for 16 assists/1 turnover. Wow!

Why only Scholarship Players .. They are all Team Players.. They all get the same chance to contribute when they are on the floor ... If a non-Scholarship players plays better then give him the credit he deserves... That only Scholarship Players is stupid in my opinion and I hope you change it ..

What really is stupid, is recognizing 10 of 14 when 10 of 50+ football players are named.

Ditto. Taylor < EJ < Tharpe.

Yeah, Keegan, it is time to revise your ratings rules. Juenemann deserves mention here. The kid played very well in the exhibition games, then brought his experience to the closing minutes of this contest.
If Young were paying his own tuition as a trial transfer player this season, would have been horrendous to have left him off these ratings.

Just another layer of B.S. (NCAA-style...) as someone finds a way to make some KU player "ineligible" to be on this list...

Its early in the season...include ALL KU players, and post a revised Keegan rating, and move forward with every player who wears the uniform and plays, to be able to be "eligible" for this fluff 'rating'. Geez, do we really have to hunt and find ways to be discriminatory??? That's a pretty anti-team/anti-unity concept. Take a nanosecond to think about it...

I would agree with Young being at the top of the list.

Congrats to Kevin. He had a great game and deserves some attention for it!

This is one game I think I'd give the game ball to the game ball! The ball seemed to not slip out of our passers' hands and did a bit of self-directing to avoid turnovers.
