KU vs. North Dakota State

Live updates from the Newell Post Live, coming to you from Memorial Stadium where the Kansas Jayhawks are taking on the North Dakota State Bison.

In March, University of Northern Iowa shocked Kansas University’s basketball team with an upset in the second round of the NCAA Tournament.

Saturday at Memorial Stadium, a similarly scrappy North Dakota State University football team handed KU another crippling loss. Hard to believe that a three-pointer — a 32-yard field goal from NDSU kicker Ryan Jastram with 8:04 to play in the third quarter — from a Missouri Valley upstart did the Jayhawks in again.

The only question left to answer now is this: We know the KU basketball team will be back, but will Turner Gill’s football Jayhawks be able to rebound from the 6-3 heartbreaker?

“It’s one game,” a dejected Gill said. “One game. That’s how you have to take it, and (you) move on from there.”

In front of 48,000 football-hungry fans, the Jayhawks laid an egg in just about every sense of the word and, in doing so, dropped their eighth straight game, a streak that dates back to the sixth game of the 2009 season.

They turned the ball over three times on offense, missed two field goals and had a punt blocked on special teams and struggled to create holes for their running game and time for the passing game in the trenches all night.

Perhaps the most clear-cut indication that this was not KU’s night came from the fact that the leading rusher was wide receiver Daymond Patterson, who gained 63 yards on three carries. Patterson also caught four balls for 66 yards.

The junior from Mesquite, Texas, was far from happy with his performance in his return to offense, however.

“There’s no regret or embarrassment,” Patterson said. “If anything was embarrassing, it wasn’t the loss, it was the way we played.”

The Jayhawks took a 3-0 lead on a 25-yard field goal by Jacob Branstetter late in the first quarter. On the third-down play that came before the kick, starting QB Kale Pick nearly connected with senior running back Angus Quigley on a pass in the flat that almost certainly would’ve been a touchdown. Instead, the pass was tipped, the Jayhawks settled for the field goal, and the offense never got back on track.

On one drive, Pick and the KU passing game appeared to click. A seven-yard strike to Johnathan Wilson followed by a pair of completions to Patterson put KU in the red zone. Two plays later, Pick threw an interception when trying to thread the ball into Bradley McDougald in the end zone.

“I didn’t see that guy. He was in line with my guard,” Pick said. “We just had a rough start, never really could get our chemistry going through the whole offense. As a unit, we just didn’t click.”

Pick, a third-year sophomore who finished 13-for-22 for 138 yards in his debut as a starter, was yanked in favor of red-shirt freshman Jordan Webb in the fourth quarter. Though Webb’s appearance inspired the crowd and momentarily gave the KU offense a lift, he fared no better than Pick, finishing 6-for-11 for 59 yards. What’s more, he and Pick now may find themselves navigating their way through a quarterback controversy in the coming weeks.

“It’s definitely not a good start,” Pick said. “Yeah, I’m not very happy now.”

Added Webb, who was asked if he knew where he stood on the depth chart: “I can’t say that I do. That’s the coach’s decision. Whoever we go with, we’re going to run with it, and we’re going to keep getting better.”

Even the Jayhawks’ good moments were riddled with frustration. Junior cornerback Isiah Barfield’s interception in the end zone in the second quarter kept NDSU off the board at the time. However, instead of falling down for the touchback, a jacked-up Barfield ran out of the end zone and was tackled at the one.

KU’s defense limited NDSU to 168 yards of total offense and came up with some crucial stops late when KU was out of timeouts and desperately needed to regain possession.

“I thought they played outstanding,” Gill said of the defense. “I think holding a team to under 200 yards of total offense … you’d take that any day.”

The loss was KU’s second all-time to an FCS (formerly Div. I-AA) opponent. The only other came in September of 1987, when KU fell, 16-11, to Louisiana Tech, which remained I-AA until 1988.

“There’s going to be a lot of people doubting us after today,” Webb said. “But we’re Kansas. People doubt us every day.”

That thought, more than any other perhaps best sums up the fact that the last three seasons of Kansas football truly were unbelievable.

Now all that’s left to see is if this season will be unbelievable, as well, even if for different reasons.

KU (0-1) will play host to No. 16 Georgia Tech (1-0) at 11 a.m. Saturday. Tech rolled over South Carolina State, 41-10, Saturday at Tech.

I agree...can we say 0-12. I'd say we have Baylor on the schedule, but I'm not even sure that will make a difference.

I guess we can give hugs all around.

No yelling though, that would only displace confidence.

Leo Hawkins 11 years, 4 months ago

What does Gray-Little have to do with this loss?

Bob Thompson 11 years, 4 months ago

OK, exactly how long until basket ball starts?

Ryan Mullen 11 years, 4 months ago

This is the reason why most BCS conferences were hesitant to take us.

Andrew Moore 11 years, 4 months ago

you're forgetting the plans that the Big East had leaked out a month ago detailing the addition of KU KSU MU and ISU...

Bad_Brad 11 years, 4 months ago

Sadly, I think even Terry Allen is laughing after this one. And Bob Valesente.

TKHAWK 11 years, 4 months ago

Agreed, Opurem is the best running back at KU! First and goal, he's your man! I think after last night's performance the fans deserve a better explanation as to why he's in Gill's dog house. How do you take your leading rusher from a year ago and move him to 3rd string defense? I don't know what he did that was SO bad, but I wish him well where ever he transfers to next year!

Kyle Crenshaw 11 years, 4 months ago

so we fired mangino because he verbally abused the players?!?! looks like they've gone soft under gill

Jared Grillot 11 years, 4 months ago

They're going to have to start lowering ticket prices again, 'cause the stands are going to start emptying. Bring a Friend free ticket night again, anyone? I MIGHT have said "first game jitters", had we not so thoroughly blown it on every facet of the game... The letdown after Mason left was rough, but this definitely doesn't bode well.

@ bobku1967: 58 days, 21 hours, 22 minutes.

ltownatrain 11 years, 4 months ago

well about 58 days till first basketball exhibition game against Washburn....good thing turner isn't coaching we'd probably lose

bradynsdad 11 years, 4 months ago

wow. i hate to say it, but i dont see us winning any games this year. it really doesnt get a whole lot easier from here. good luck gill.

Wildhawk2198 11 years, 4 months ago

How was the game badly coached? Unfortunately, we had dropped balls, fumbles, and missed kicks. How does that have to do with the coaching? We had more yards in every thing. Please explain to me how the game was badly coached.

flowmaster 11 years, 4 months ago

10 men on the field during a special teams play, switching out quarterbacks in the second half, lineman goofing off on the sidelines while getting their ass kicked on the field.

That is the definition of bad coaching. No organization, no leadership, no discipline. THAT is bad coaching.

ltownatrain 11 years, 4 months ago

For the gill lovers that say give him three years before judging I will say this now.....KU is getting a new AD next year....more losses like this and gill is gone in two

Danimal 11 years, 4 months ago

With loses like this I wouldn't give him that long. It looks like Turner Gill along with the revised schedules for next year will drag KU back to being a bottom dweller in college football.

jcrawford12 11 years, 4 months ago

That does it for me. Ready for bball season.

We got strait ABUSED out there. The worst part was though, the mental mistakes. Dear lord, how many fumbles/penalty's/dumb plays can we make ? I thought we were going to play "free" now ?

I want mangino back

kugrad93 11 years, 4 months ago

Yeah, sure. It's Gill's fault that the kicker choked and the tight end dropped everything. For the record, Mangino lost his first game 45-3.

Kip Reiserer 11 years, 4 months ago

I agree. Bad performance, but I think everyone needs to chill before we talk about him getting fired or what not. Everyone has known since spring our quarterback position is bad and Gill can help with that in time. The defense played well. And Tim Biere was terrible, dropped passes and two fumbles. Not Gill's fault. The truly bad thing about this is that they are about to tell the world about how us and Ole Miss lost to FCS schools on Sports Center.

Nick Cole 11 years, 4 months ago

How is Biere dropping passes and fumbling not Gill's fault when Gill is the one who kept allowing plays for him to be put into action. Did Gill make him fumble, no, but I could see that Tim was off from the start of the game. If a guy is off, try someone else, like say Patterson, who was having a decent game. It all falls back onto the shoulders of the coach.

Steven Mathew 11 years, 4 months ago

Near the final drive (if not) of the game for KU, Tim Biere dropped a pass and the whole crowd booed him. Turner Gill then sent A.J. Steward to replace Tim Biere. When the student section saw Tim Biere walking off and A.J. Steward walking on, there was a huge applause from the student section. That was hilarious!

Scott Perlmutter 11 years, 4 months ago

41 days until Late Night. I want back the verbally abusive overweight coach back. At least he wins the easy games and took us to a BCS game.

Cary Ediger 11 years, 4 months ago

Mangino's first year at KU: Record 2–10 Conference 0–8

Perhaps Turner needs more time than 1 game.

Ryan Mullen 11 years, 4 months ago

Well that better than the 0-12 season we are going to get.

Christopher Hauser 11 years, 4 months ago

Mangino was 2-10 with absolutely no talent from the Terry Allen era. You are forgetting that we have better athletes than we did then.

Travis Shinkle 11 years, 4 months ago

He didn't lose to a I-AA school his first time out...this is pathetic and embarrassing...we won the ORANGE BOWL three years ago! And now this?!?

Sam Constance 11 years, 4 months ago

How many FCS teams did Mangino lose to at home by a score of 6-3?

Look, I was a Mangino critic and wanted him gone, so it means a great deal when I say that this first showing by Gill's team has me wanting him back.

This is the lowest KU has been since the Terry Allen days.

I will be downright shocked if KU wins a single game.

bleed_BLUE 11 years, 4 months ago

Rock Chalk Saturdays, huh??? WHAT A JOKE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

JBurtin 11 years, 4 months ago

Good on defense, but in serious need of an identity on offense. From what I saw late it looks like Webb will end up being the better in game QB. I pulled for Webb before the Spring game, but I thought that Pick's performance earned him a chance to start. I'm hoping the staff will give Webb a shot to start the next game as Pick just seemed to freeze in a real game situation. A big problem that he and Webb both had some trouble with was simply throwing the ball a bit too late. This cause our receivers and TE to get hung out to dry and resulted in some dropped passes and a couple of fumbles. Unfortunately that's an issue that will only be fixed with experience and currently neither QB has any.

It looks like we need to put much of our emphasis into getting the ball to Patterson and Beshears as much as possible as the both have the speed to get outside and get upfield quickly. Our line still just doesn't look gelled enough to give us a consistent run game up the middle at this point and those two athletes can help to alleviate that problem.

I wasn't expecting them to be world beaters this year but losing this game will definitely put this staff behind the eight ball as it has gotten the negativity train rolling. They've got a tall order ahead of them to find an offensive identity quickly and sneak in a few wins.

Troll harder.

Bob Thompson 11 years, 4 months ago

I think what we are looking for is continual improvement all season long. At least we started so low that the only way to go is up.

ltownatrain 11 years, 4 months ago

KUgrad93 yes Mangino did lose his first game 45-3......TO IOWA STATE A D I TEAM who finished 7-7

kugrad93 11 years, 4 months ago

That 2002 team also lost to UNLV, Bowling Green and a a terrible Baylor team. Mangino lost his last seven games at KU and 11 of his last 14 Big 12 games, and you all expect Gill to clean up that mess overnight. What a joke.

Chad Sandwell 11 years, 4 months ago

Hey, Jackass.....Lew was there the whole game. He may not have been smiling, but he was there the whole game!

flyingfinn 11 years, 4 months ago

You can blame it on the kicker or the tight end, but ultimately it's the coaches job to get a team ready to play and this coaching job was a disgrace

Dan Harris 11 years, 4 months ago

lets all jump off the cliff together, ready? 1 2 3 GO!!!!

William James 11 years, 4 months ago

I jumped off the cliff several months back.

KGphoto 11 years, 4 months ago

I'm sorry Gill. I can't support this. Hopefully you can get your job back at Nebraska, which will never happen. Your boys were unprepared. No excuses.

Stop preaching morals and start kicking some ass. Oops. Did I swear?

kualuminohio 11 years, 4 months ago

I got to say this is rediculous, The Orange Bowl year was so exciting. To think the head coach of that year would be removed or run out of town still shocks me. You didn't have to love Mangino but most people respected the mans ability to coach. Look at where we are at, I dont care if this is only the first game, you dont lose to North Dakota State period... If you didn't support Mangino you are not a Jayhawk, your a fool. Good by Lew... Good ridance...

bleed_BLUE 11 years, 4 months ago

The only reason they had a good year in 08 was because they didn't play the three best teams in the conference (Texas, Oklahoma, Texas Tech). Mangino, AT BEST, is a below average coach. Look at the records of the other seasons. Mediocre is being kind.

Jeff Coffman 11 years, 4 months ago

This basically is the same schedule (win one harder non-conference foe), and we are looking at a 0-2 win season, compared to 12 wins that year.

OSU, TA&M, and Nebraska were all beaten that year, and don't forget we beat Virginia Tech. So don't even begin to knock that year.

Fact is we couldn't score against a DII team.

Mark Mangino left with a winning record at KU. And remember also that Operum (who is now on defense or something), was the running back when we were 5-0 last year...he got hurt and Reesing got hurt, and the rest is history...and so was the best coach we've ever had.

Chad Dexter 11 years, 4 months ago

Ok, this is completely incorrect and, quite frankly, retarded.

First, KU did play OU, Texas, and Tech in 08. They lost all 3 of those games. All 3 of those teams were great that year each finishing with just 1 loss. Still, KU finished 8-5 with a victory in the Insight Bowl. That's a good season for KU. I would gladly take that right now.

Or perhaps you were thinking of 07. And if that's the case, you're an idiot. I don't care what anyone says, going 12-1 and beating the #3 team in the country to win the Orange Bowl is quite an accomplishment. If you don't think so, you don't know s#@t about college football.

bleed_BLUE 11 years, 4 months ago

Why would ANYONE intelligent want to know ANYTHING about college football. Those people are idiots. But, you just showed your true, IMMATURE colors, childish, dumb, lost.......but, living in Lawrence, all you hear about is KU sports CRAP!!!!!!!!!! So I may have been off by a year. Big deal. If I actually was STUPID enough to follow this "sport", then I would have gotten the season correct. Besides...the INSIGHT.COM BOWL???? How ridiculous of a bowl game is that??? Most bowl games are ridiculous, just like college football fans such as yourself. You aren't smart enough to be able to follow the ONLY sport on the planet, played on ice. It's too fast paced and complicated for your small mind. :)

Michael Bratisax 11 years, 4 months ago

Yeah..They always give 'Coach of the Year' awards to below average coaches.

bleed_BLUE 11 years, 4 months ago

Look at his career record. Is it a winning record???? ONE season doesn't make someone a good or great coach. Again, like I correctly stated before, "BELOW AVERAGE COACH". Just waiting for the next idiot on this forum to try and outwit me. That won't happen.

Sam Constance 11 years, 4 months ago

Sorry, this game was terrible, but Mangino had one great year in which the schedule lined up just right (and he should have gone undefeated).

Did you already forget the 1-7 Big 12 showing with a team that was loaded (by KU's standards) with talent?

Mangino was not the answer.

Unfortunately, it seems as though Gill might not be either.

tjamz 11 years, 4 months ago

I kind of take offense to the "you don't lose to North Dakota State period..." comment.

Yes, NDSU had a HORRIBLE season last year, ending at 3-8 but it's not like they haven't beaten D1 FBS teams before. Minnesota, Central Michigan come to mind. And the 3-8 season they had last year a lot of those losses were by 1 TD or less, but just like KU just found out, a loss is a loss is a loss.

You didn't see NDSU fans clamoring to fire coach Bohl after last season....even though just 2 years prior he took the team to an 11-1 record and "f'ed up last season" . Why? Because the fans at NDSU knew it was just a hiccup year for the program. They know that NDSU can contend with a number of FBS teams and will once again be a team to beat in FCS.

Here is one NDSU fan that hopes your team keeps getting better. Keeps fixing it's mistakes. And hopes that your current coach proves you all wrong.

Yes, it was an embarrassing loss, but at the end of the day it was only one loss in a long season. A good coach will find a way to right some of the wrongs. You just need to give him time to do so.

FinalFinal 11 years, 4 months ago

What did everyone expect? The man came from Buffalo! He takes names off jerseys.

And Mangino took over a program that was in its worst shape EVER and that is saying something in Kansas football.

We are two years removed from a BCS win. Gill is so over his head...and Chuck Third and Long is BRUTAL.

Ryan Mullen 11 years, 4 months ago

What did everyone expect. All of the Gill articles this summer were about how good of a man he is and much of a family man he is. I don't remember reading one on how good of a coach he is. Don't get me wrong love family, love God, but I want to win.

TJWhatleyLives 11 years, 4 months ago

As I stated earlier. I wonder how long it will be before Gill starts cussing?

kualuminohio 11 years, 4 months ago

Dont get me wrong I will support Gill but for how long...

KU_FanSince75 11 years, 4 months ago

Again, like I said, I am still behind Coach Gill. But this will get real ugly, real fast if we don't improve from this game. Georgia Tech is like a Tiger lickin' its chops. I rearranged my schedule for next Saturday so I could watch the game at 11 am, against the Yellow Jackets. Maybe I should not have done that.

It didn't help that Gill ran out of timeouts before the fourth quarter, I believe. That really made him look bad. And now, who will start at quarterback against Georgia Tech? Kind of a mess right now. We'll see what happens!

Jack Wilson 11 years, 4 months ago

cediger: Stupid, stupid analogy. We are three seasons removed from an Orange Bowl and the cupboard was not bare. Mangino came to a program that was at the bottom and turned it around. 3 freaking points vs. ND State? Witch-hunts have their price.

FinalFinal 11 years, 4 months ago

Chainsaw has been in Lawrence too long. His staff's payroll is $2.5M,,,,and that is his KUAD staff.

He was drunk with power when he passed on interviews from legitimate big named coaches and went with Gill. Drunk on ego and political correctness. Gill is not ready for this job.

Travis Shinkle 11 years, 4 months ago

Is this a shock? Gill's overall record, at BUFFALO, was under's like the Royals who like to hire bad managers and still wonder why they lose. 0-12? After today's game, what other outcome is possible? The Big 12 is going to kill us...

areyouserious 11 years, 4 months ago

best comment on the board.......

Fulmer, Tubberville, Harbaugh..................and Lew gives the whole farm to Turner Grill from bufoonville?

so sick

jhawkroger 11 years, 4 months ago

You might be dreaming if you think Fulmer, Tubberville, or Harbaugh would show up at KU. Fulmer was no great shakes without Cutliff and recruiting at TN, Auburn, or Stanford is a total no brainer compared to Kansas. KU is my school, always will be but take off the rose colored glasses and understand that no matter what, we are not a football school, never have been and never will be.

ltownatrain 11 years, 4 months ago

Lets all hope Gill turns this around cause if he doesn't I think he will be run out of town by a new Athletic Director next year sometime.

Kevin Heath 11 years, 4 months ago

Let's look on the bright side. There is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY the football team will be fighting the basketball team about who the girls on campus want. The football team will not be thinking they are the big shots. Even though the basketball team lost to UNI in the NCAA tournament last year, this is worse without question.

I guess if you don't buy it then maybe the two teams can have the fight about which team had the uglier loss.

jayhawkintx73 11 years, 4 months ago

No it isn't. It was in the NCAA tourney. This is week one against a team we should have routed.

Ryan Mullen 11 years, 4 months ago

We all knew we were going to suck this year. In the tourney we were the #1 over all seed. How can you say this game was worse. Plus the tourney game we had more to play for.

Kip Reiserer 11 years, 4 months ago

Yeah, think about how you felt after UNI. I'm upset, but I was downright depressed and miserable after that one.

Kyle Crenshaw 11 years, 4 months ago

How can you say that!? UNI was a D1 team...and they won a tough Missouri Valley Conference! NDSU is a 1-AA crap school that makes even Michigan fans laugh when compared to Appalachian State!

Sam Constance 11 years, 4 months ago

Yeah, must agree that NDSU in football is WAY worse than UNI in basketball.

UNI finished the regular season ranked #12 Pomeroy and #29 RPI.

The only reason it looks so bad is because it happened in the 2nd round, which KU fans remember for the likes of UTEP, Rhode Island, etc... But truth be told, the Big East obsessed seeding committee did a terrible job of seeding UNI--they should have been in the 3-5 seed range instead of a 9 seed.

To put it in perspective, Kentucky only played 2 teams all year who had a higher Pomeroy/RPI rating than UNI: Tennessee and West Virginia. They went 1-2 in three games against those two opponents.

I'd say the loss to NDSU is infinitely worse. Especially when you take the way it happened (6-3, really?!?) into account.

Markstaff 11 years, 4 months ago

This was a sad day for KU football. I hope its the low point of the Turner Gill era. Concerned it may not be. KU deserves better. This was a pathetic loss.

William James 11 years, 4 months ago

In my mind, you reap what you sew and Kansas is getting exactly what they deserve. When you pass up a man who has legendary status down at Auburn (Tommy Tuberville), who publicly said he wanted to come to Kansas and take over the program, and go with a guy who has no career victories against any BCS schools, because he's a good guy and a minority, there are going to be consequences.

truefan 11 years, 4 months ago

I don't know why KU has to switch between good offense and good defense. We have great defense for a few years and have to struggle through watching Adam Barman take away any chance of scoring. Then we get Todd Reesing and our defense falls off the face of the Earth minus maybe the 07 team which was only okay, but not great.

Tonight our defense looked shaky to start and then forced multiple three and outs and kept us in the game, but of course we couldn't have even a respectable offense to take the victory. False starts, dropped passes, fumbles, multiple time outs to avoid delay of game penalties. I know we had question marks, but that was pathetic.

Tyler Bruce 11 years, 4 months ago

i dont want to be the big downer here.. but that Defense you're speaking of that forced mutlitple 3 and outs was playing against Division II Offense.. the D did what they were SUPPOSED to do..... to a DIVISION II team

JBurtin 11 years, 4 months ago

"i dont want to be the big downer here.. but that Defense you're speaking of that forced mutlitple 3 and outs was playing against Division II Offense.. the D did what they were supposed to do..... to a division ii team"

The most important part of your post was: "the D did what they were supposed to do"

He didn't say that they would have done the same thing to Alabama, simply that they did what they were supposed to do. Can you ask for more?

Further, they did it under circumstances where the offense played tight and nervous the entire game and put them in bad situations.

jayhawkintx73 11 years, 4 months ago

Absolutely pathetic. Did anyone say he's actually a coach?

jayhawkintx73 11 years, 4 months ago

One good thing about this. There won't be any more articles about parking for a football game being limited.

Fruity22 11 years, 4 months ago

Haven't been this embarrarsed since loosing to Oral Bobs in Allen. Offense was an absolute disgrace. Defense not bad, only giving up 6 points to an inferior opponent is acceptable. On the plus side leg room is offically returning to Memorial Stadium if you want to watch the hawks get beat by 3 or 4 touches. When will the next sell out be now that Nebraska is leaving the conference? Circle the wagons for New Mexico State hawk fans, it is your one chance for a win this year.

Mike Gammill 11 years, 4 months ago

Nowhere to go but up, I guess. But, I don't even want to watch us play anyone in the Big 12 right now. Could be a LONG fall season.

Cora Smith 11 years, 4 months ago

Losing is one thing. Looking disorganized, not knowing plays and being out of position so badly you have to get a penalty trying to help is another. This team was in no way ready to play.

flowmaster 11 years, 4 months ago

Well said. Talent, size, and speed mean nothing with players don't even know if they're supposed to be on the flippin' field.

Fruity22 11 years, 4 months ago

Who is number 72 by the way? His scholarship should be pulled.

kualuminohio 11 years, 4 months ago

This team was in the Orange bowl, 2 years ago. How do we get to this, I understand this is a very different team but how do you get to this, horrible... Good Grief... Support the Football team folks, we need a strong football team at KU.... Lets hope Gill turns this garbage around...

jhawkazmars 11 years, 4 months ago

WOW what a game, beaten by div 2 school. I am not sure who lost the game for us because there WERE NO NAMES ON THE JERSEYS..thought for a minute we had been dropped to div 2 school, or maybe junior high.
Was Pick injured? or was he just pulled to boost his confidence. Worse announcers and TV coverage, didn't tell us several of the penalties called, kept saying players names but NO NUMBERS. I am sure MM is in Florida LHAO, wish he was on the sideline yelling tonight instead. Miss you Mark!!! When is Perkins leaving town?? 0-12 I really miss Todd, Kerry and Dez. Maybe Todd could sneak in and quarterback a few games....

Mike Gammill 11 years, 4 months ago

Kind of reminds me of the Valsente (remember him?) days. I believe we lost to Louisiana Tech at home during one of his two seasons. I do remember a 71-10 loss to OU and 70-0 to Nebraska during his run.

God, let's hope that doesn't happen this time around.

JayCat_67 11 years, 4 months ago

I was in the band for both of those losses. That really sucked because we couldn't even leave early. The "Toilet Bowl" tie against KSU the following year was a classic too. Only good thing to come out of that one is I'm still married to the girl I met at a party afterward.

JCat, awesome "good thing" story. That is classic. I recall that tie, listening by radio - which is something we may have to endure again this season if we don't get better soon. Was it 17-all? Neither team was good enough to win. Fortunately KU got a guy to block an almost certain fieldgoal by KSU with the clock running out, if memory serves. The rest of us were kissing our sister, and you were working the long-range plan. Nice.

hawkaholicmaniac04 11 years, 4 months ago

This is bad but not as bad as Jacksonville State over Ole Miss.

oregonjhawk 11 years, 4 months ago

At least Jacksonville State is from Florida...

CatsEatBirds 11 years, 4 months ago

How is it not as bad as JS over Miss? You are supposed to be a division I program and represent a tough conference. Everyone else in the Big 12 won, and some over major conference opponents. How can you justify this?

Having a good Bball team does not make up for embarrassing an entire conference in the more important sport. ISU would've beaten NDSU by 20. There are several high schools in KC that could've beaten NDSU, how is that not bad?

There is no greater embarrassment than what KU put on their home field yesterday. It would be smart to petition the ACC for an invite and drop the football program in honor of women's lacrosse.

There is currently no worse division I football team than the Jayhawks. Congrats.

kugrad93 11 years, 4 months ago

Let me say it again. Mangino lost his last seven games and 11 of his last 14 against Big 12 teams. This program already was in decline, and it's going to take time to fix it. It's going to be a rough, transition year. Grow up and deal with it.

Jeff Coffman 11 years, 4 months ago

Operum the running back went out after game 5 and Reesing was injured. We were competitive in all of the games.

I guess you could say we were competitive against a Div II team at home, if you want to count that.

KU_Alumn_2000 11 years, 4 months ago

kugrad93 - Are you kidding me ? We just got beat by NDSU...a team that went 3-8 last season.

Sorry dude but Mangino didn't lose games like this...and he didn't leave this program in shambles like you're saying.

flyingfinn 11 years, 4 months ago

Totally agree guys, kugrad93 you are in lala land if you think that this was a team prepared by a good coach

FTC_Jayhawk 11 years, 4 months ago

You all are missing kugrad93's point. He is just telling all the Mangino missers that Mangino wasn't a good enough football coach. Regardless of what we have now, Mangino's days of success here were over. Don't you all remember how he seemed to go out of his way last year to try to lose games?

This game sure makes Turner Gill look sucky, but the previous seven games made Mangino look sucky. Stop pretending like everything would be fine if only Mangino hadn't been run out of town because he was such a meany.

ltownatrain 11 years, 4 months ago

Most people expected it to be rough.....however, we weren't playing a Big 12 team now were we.....No we were playing a Div I AA school

Annette Lee 11 years, 4 months ago

I think this is as bad as bad as Jacksonville State over Ole Miss.

ltownatrain 11 years, 4 months ago

No it's not Jacksonville State was 8-3 last year whilst North Dakota state was 3-9

Tyler Bruce 11 years, 4 months ago

last year, ole miss played in the cotton bowl.. we didnt make one

overall, they're equal.. know why? because they're both losses to 1 AA teams! PATHETIC

Jeremy Shank 11 years, 4 months ago

Leading rusher was a wideout? I seriously can't believe that Opurum would not have done better than Sands' 1.7 or Quigley's 2.1 per rush. Losing faith in this coaching staff's abilities pretty quick.

Marc Frey 11 years, 4 months ago

Funny how many of you called out Keegan this morning for his 4-8 prediction. I for one thought we would win this game. Hard now to find another 4 wins. I guess the QB situation was not who was the best QB, but who wasn't the worst. But, hey, I will make the nine hour drive to Lawrence next Saturday. I and am still and always a fan. I just many not have as much as a myopic opinion as some of you. Rock Chalk!

d2psugrad 11 years, 4 months ago

This is 10X worse than the Ole Miss loss unless we can somehow become a division 2 school in football. When was Ole Miss in a BCS Bowl? We went from that to not being able to hang in NCAA II tonight. I hope they turn it around, but we lost to a team that was D2 less than a decade ago. This may be the biggest upset in FBS history. Until they prove different, KU football is the laughing stock of FBS football.

JayCat_67 11 years, 4 months ago

I don't know. Appalachian State over Michigan at Michigan a couple years ago was probably worse. Face it, KU isn't exactly a traditional football powerhouse.

d2psugrad 11 years, 4 months ago

ND State recently "stepped up" to the FCS level. From someone who who watched Pittsburg State beat this team not that long ago, this was like watching Emporia State get a win against KU.

JayCat_67 11 years, 4 months ago

Oh OK, I'll settle for a draw on this one and simply agree that things are pretty stinky in Hawk Land right now.

Jeff Coffman 11 years, 4 months ago

North Dakota State was 3-9 last year with 11 starters returning. They can only offer 65 scholarships.

App St was the Div II champion returning several starters. I agree that was a worse loss, but if you are trying to sugar coat this isn't working.

JayCat_67 11 years, 4 months ago

Nope, I don't think Mary Poppins would have enough sugar to keep this medicine from been puked all over the bathroom.

kckmedic 11 years, 4 months ago

Appalachian State is in the hunt for the FCS National Championship every year so I would say that this is worse than that game.

Nathan Mattison 11 years, 4 months ago

Can we pay NDSU with athletic equipment to diminish the humility of paying a FCS team to beat our tails at home.

Travis Shinkle 11 years, 4 months ago

For all of the "it's going to be a rebuilding year, blah, blah blah" people out there: November 12, KU hosts Longwood in basketball. KU basketball is in a "rebuilding" year too, so would that be an acceptable loss too?

ltownatrain 11 years, 4 months ago

No cause I think Bill Self would kill himself and the Fieldhouse would swallow itself whole if that happened

Travis Shinkle 11 years, 4 months ago

Exactly, there'd be a riot. Could you imagine if that would have happened on Coach Self's first game after Roy left? There was no way KU would have let that happen! When Roy left, the AD went out and got the best available coach in the country, taking him from another BIG TIME school...when Mangino was fired, the AD/school went out and, as some have already pointed out, got the "hottest coach who's actually done nothing" from a small conference...

JBurtin 11 years, 4 months ago

Bringing in the #1 recruit on the nation and returning nearly everybody qualifies as a rebuilding year?

Not sure how you came to that conclusion.

flowmaster 11 years, 4 months ago

Not sure where you're going with this... Do you realize the night and day different in KU basketball vs. football? Talent? Tradition? Support? Do you think the football team has 1/4 of the talent as the basketball team? (Even in Self's first year)

You aren't comparing apples to oranges, you're comparing apples to cow dung.

kureader 11 years, 4 months ago

Markstaff, it's not just the loss, it's how game was played/coached. Turner Gill stood 150 feet from me on the sidelines ... barely communicated with his team/players/coaches. There was no "fire" on the sidelines. I've listened to the guy at every opportunity. He can barely complete a sentence. He's a nice guy and a great athlete ... who's dumb as a board. Our athletes should have won this game without coaches, plays or a home field advantage. Half the team from North Dakota State played 9 man high school football in North Dakota. They outhustled us on our own field in front of 50,000 of our own fans. That's pathetic, "Terry Allen" coaching. Our guys weren't ready to play. Our coach doesn't make $500,000 any more. Now that our coach can make a couple million, we should expect to beat North Dakota State. We were 27 point favorites today. After we all hold hands, say a prayer, and sing "Kumbyya", we should send Gill back to Lincoln, Nebraska where people don't care that he's dumb as a board.

whats_going_on 11 years, 4 months ago

Apparently, Terry Allen has been the only one in several coaching reigns to actually win his first game.

So, cool it.

d2psugrad 11 years, 4 months ago

Kale Pick did not play terrible, and neither did Webb. Webb has a strong arm and this team is capable beating big 12 teams, but this staff has to put them in a position to win, and that obviously did not happen against what was supposed to be a patsy to get to bowl eligibility.

xdisciple 11 years, 4 months ago

It's a new system, people!! We lost Reesing, Briscoe, Meier-- basically our whole offense, and let's face it, even Mangino was never known for his defense. You're acting just like KSU wants you to act-- doing the Jayhawk Walk. We're becoming known for saying you don't care about football, the way NU says it doesn't care about basketball. Well, if you haven't figured out yet how stupid that is with the way the conference shuffle went this summer, don't fool yourself you're a winner because you're a loser. NU has NO BASKETBALL and just went to the Big 10. We're top five basketball and didn't get a DAMNED BITE! NOBODY wants JUST a great basketball program. IT MEANS NOTHING. If we're not a football school too, basically we're nothing. Maybe you whiners deserve to be nothing, but I don't. Those fans over in Manhattan, who everybody in Lawrence wants to lord over and laugh at, at least they sold out their stadium, stayed til the end, and spanked UCLA. They support their football program win or lose. They didn't walk out after Prince. Maybe we can get Mangino back like they did Snyder. If Perkins is gone, he might come back.
Because if you haven't noticed, KSU is back in basketball, it's no fluke, and they're liable to beat us this year at least once. THINK about it. If you want K-State to be acknowledged by the whole country as the flagship D-1 sports school in Kansas, then walk out like you always have and do your little "I don't care about football because we rule in bball" BS dance. Good god. Grow up or get out. Supporting one sport is no longer an option.

Travis Shinkle 11 years, 4 months ago

Dude...I think the complaints SHOW THAT WE CARE! We're NOT happy, it's embarrassing, it's pathetic, and it shouldn't have happened. Now you can continue to drink the kool-aide and be happy about this and try to connect the dots from KU back to K-State--which I'd like to remind you that the Kitty Kats LAST YEAR didn't sell out most of their home basketball games...

xdisciple 11 years, 4 months ago

I'm not happy. I didn't like the Gill hire. I didn't like the Mangino fire. But I do remember last fall when we were 5-0, people talking about Reesing for Heisman, ranked in the top 20, holding a slight lead in our conference opener against Iowa State, and I watched WITH MY OWN EYES half the student section disappear at half-time. Then we went 0-7.

You can argue we just sucked, and that was a coincidence, but the players noticed it, and it took away some of their fight, and the way the Burge Union debacle shook out, they lost the rest of it. I'm not drinking any kool-aide, dude. Man, I'm wide awake. But I also care about football, and have never bought the crap about how good we are in basketball. Kool-aide? Where did basketball alone get us this summer? Basketball alone is the kool-aide.

roadwarrior1969 11 years, 4 months ago

I couldn't agree more. You wait til basketball people need to go away. I heard at least a dozen people say that leaving the stadium. I would have punched them all in the mouth, except I was with my wife and 3 kids.

I can't stand the "wait til hoops crowd" because you give Jayhawk fans a bad name, but you just don't care.

xdisciple 11 years, 4 months ago

Right on, brother!! Truly a roadwarrior you are. I'd be willing to go WINLESS in basketball for five years to get a football program going. And last year was the year we could have done it, but in spite of how everybody knows things really went down the bball boys walked and Mangino got fired. As long as these talk talk talk p____s represent KU and all the administration can see are basketball tickets that ain't going to happen. I'd like to punch a few of them (administrators) too.

Sam Constance 11 years, 4 months ago

I understand the frustration with the "wait until basketball" crowd, but...

Today's showing DESERVES that kind of attitude. We don't have the same margin of error as traditional football powers do--when they lose a head-scratcher like this (once every 20 years), it's a fluke. When Kansas loses one like this it looks like our program is reverting to it's ways of old. It's far more embarrassing, imho, to the program than some fans who prefer basketball to sub-par football.

Kansas fans have certainly shown over the past couple years that if you give them something to be proud of, they will support the program. Heck, I think most would be happy to make a bowl game on a fairly regular basis.

babyjay1 11 years, 4 months ago

Agreed... not sure how I feel about Gill.. the team looked very unorganized last night. However, I will go to every game, yell loud and be supportive (although, my husband will get tired of my cussing when things start to fall apart). I love football and LOVE KU but last night made me sad....

Michael Leiker 11 years, 4 months ago

Mangino was never known for his defense? Were you watching in 2006, 2007, 2005 even? Those teams were great defensively, played in the opposing team's backfields, forced turnovers. Mangino took undersized high school quarterbacks and made them Big XII players of the year at middle linebacker.

KSU had 40000 there for the KU game last year with entire empty sections.

I do agree, KSU taking control is a serious possibility.

Chad Dexter 11 years, 4 months ago

KU was very good on defense in 2005 and 2007. The problem with 2005 was that their offense wasn't that great (3-12 loss at KSU). 2007 I'll give ya. It was pretty good. But you're high if you think the 2006 defense was good. If memory serves, we were close to the bottom in pass defense that year.

gardenjay 11 years, 4 months ago

What a bunch of frowny-faced fans. Booing, acttually booing our team. Did you see what happened when the crowd actually backed the defense after being appealed to do so by the defense? They sacked their q-back for a massive loss. Why should our team have to appeal for support? Bleah!

I have observed a relationship in young athletes: Support, then, results. Support, then, results. I guarantee that if the stands are packed next time, with double the fan noise and enthusiasm, that the players will respond in kind.

While booing a KU team may seem appropriate, given the corporate nature of the KUAD, it is really the direct opposite of what college athletics is supposed to be. Student athletes, as opposed to the one-and-done professional KU basketball students, are trying their best to make the field and make it in the classroom.

I saw a few student fans in the stands who fit what I would call relational fans. That is, fans that relate to the players they are cheering for as students at a University they chose for their mutual future. Kudos to you, young men and women of KU.

I'm not even anywhere near Lawrence, but I watched the game to the last dying second. I am excited about the upcoming game. I don't bet on KU to win, but I enjoy the excitement of watching raw young quarterbacks, and thought it was thrilling to see the arm of Jordan Webb, and all the potential this team has once the kinks are worked out.

Besides, a loss like this helps bring the college back into football. Rock Chalk! Put on a smile, everything will be OK!!!! :) :) :)

Travis Shinkle 11 years, 4 months ago

And of course, you know how well a loss like this HELPS recruiting more of those raw talent, student athletes...

FTC_Jayhawk 11 years, 4 months ago

I stayed until the bitter end tonight, and was booing the overpaid, professional coaches many times throughout the last quarter-and-a-half.

I booed the coaches for leaving Tim Biere in the game, I booed the coaches for calling Sands' number into the teeth of the defense, for the terrible plays that they designed that left so many NDSU defenders unblocked, and for the way they had the team poorly prepared to play tonight.

I felt bad for the players for the position that the coaches put them in. Since I have so much love and appreciation for the players, that pi$$ed me off and I booed the coaches again.

Can you imagine how much revenue this showing will cost the University?

Mangino_Maniac 11 years, 4 months ago

I was expecting some tough transitions with a new staff, new quarterback, etc, but where was the fire?? We have too good a group of athletes to perform four quarters like that... reminded me of a game at SMU during Terry Allen's last tour of duty... eeesh.

Michael Leiker 11 years, 4 months ago

I was close to the bench tonight and really felt like there was a ton of fire the first quarter. The speed with which it turned into throwing helmets and faces looking at the ground after making mistakes was staggering.

Ryan Mullen 11 years, 4 months ago

I just read an article that there was an earthquake in Florida. As it turns out it was just Mangino jumping up and down laughing. This is a direct quote from the article " Neighbors felt tremors some few houses down from former Kansas head basketball coach Mark Mangino house, scientists were baffled as to how the seismic meter could have gone up to a 5".

flyingfinn 11 years, 4 months ago

You're a lucky only had to listen to it some of us watched this disaster

Mangino_Maniac 11 years, 4 months ago

JHinMullen... Mangino coached basketball? ;-)

Ryan Mullen 11 years, 4 months ago

I know the guy who wrote the article does not know alot about sports.

d2psugrad 11 years, 4 months ago

I definitely agree with KUreader, this staff needs to drop th nice guy BS and demand performance. Mangino may have not been politically correct all the time, but a D1 athlete should be able to handle being poked in the chest and cussed at. It's freakin football and no successful coach in D1 programs is a self proclaimed kumbaya lets all hold hands it will be ok candy ass. I'm not saying you have to an a-hole to win football games, but it is war - and if you aren't playing with emotion and fire in your belly, your getting your but whipped by a less talented team that is playing like they have a set!

whats_going_on 11 years, 4 months ago

there have been plenty of legendary coaches who don't batter the players.

Look at all of you pathetic f*cks who called for Mangino's head, and after ONE game, are begging for him back.

JayCat_67 11 years, 4 months ago

Looks like there's going to be some quality football in town this year anyway. It's just on Friday nights.

Brandon Meek 11 years, 4 months ago

I think that performance was as pathetic as anyone, but remember this...this was essentially Mangino's pitiful team from last year minus its four best players.

Brandon Meek 11 years, 4 months ago

And #86 should give his scholarship back...

jhox 11 years, 4 months ago

I liked the defense. Granted, we should shut down a D1AA team, but I liked the way the corners pressed and how close the safeties plyed ot the line of scrimmage. It beat watching teams beat us with 5 and 6 yard unchallenged passes like they did last year.

Linebacker Stephen Johnson (I believe) looked good and showed some speed.

The offensive line got their butts kicked all night long. The couldn't open a hole for the backs and they couldn't protect the QB. The play calling was poor. We didn't pass on first down much early, so they stacked against the run, and then late in the game abandoned the run too quickly. And the Tight End dropped everything thrown his way, but when he didn't drop the pass, he fumbled it after he caught it.

I'm not ready to give up on the season just yet. I definitely don't see a bowl game, but could see this team winning 4 or 5 games if the offense comes around, because the defense showed some promise. This is a big "if", I realize. The offense has to do a lot of coming around...

If Torbush had been the Defensive coordinator last year, we probably would have won 8 games.

d2psugrad 11 years, 4 months ago

Defense wasn't all that bad, but a D Back getting tackled on the one after picking a pass i the end zone is indicative of a player not being coached up on knowing the situation. That great play turned into 3 very valuable points for the Bison because we started drive from our end zone instead of the 20.

Kevin Heath 11 years, 4 months ago

The football team was supposed to be down, but not be terrible. A "down" school in a BCS conference still scores a touchdown against North Dakota State. Heck, a "down" school beats North Dakota State by 3 touchdowns.

I would say one of the following statements must be true:

1) The coaching staff didn't get the team motivated to play. Yes, I know it was the first game for this staff, but if you can't get a team motivated to play the season opener at home with a new system in place, there is a problem. Heck, the fans were motivated for this game with the new staff, and 99% of us have never spoken a word to Turner Gill. If they weren't motivated, that is a serious problem

2) Someone cannot judge talent. They made bad decisions about who plays where and when they play (i.e. moving our best running back to defense).

3) The players just choked. If this is the case, this is a combo of 1 and 2...players not ready to play, and not having the right players in the right place at the right time.

4) North Dakota State is now a football powerhouse.

I'm not any football guru, I'm a fan. However, I didn't and still don't believe our talent was so depleted. We will never know because Gill can't tell us. I haven't heard anyone who supposedly "knows" football screaming that the talent at KU is just poor right now so they will be terrible. My point here is that it looks like the fault for this is pretty much on the coaching staff. I don't see how we can point to the players at all in this one. It would be different if one player fumbled or there was an interception or one key dropped pass. Everyone makes mistakes, some are just bigger than others. Tonight KU looked inept in every facet of the game to me, and that is all a reflection of the coaching.

I'm not going to start screaming for the coach to be fired after one game...but I think it is safe to say after tonight this coaching staff lost a year of opportunity. There will be no third year unless there is significant improvement. This was the absolute worse I've ever seen a KU team play since I've been old enough to have something of a clue.

To all the people saying "there is no place to go but up" I completely agree. The only problem is that from this loss we could go up about 10 steps on the ladder and still be in the sewer over our heads in you know what. We are in it deep, how do we even begin to come out of this?

Any guess on the spread for the Georgia Tech game? How much you think tickets will go for on Ebay? It goes without saying those two numbers when strongly in opposite directions tonight.

Tony Bandle 11 years, 4 months ago

Spent the day with my in-laws, all solid Mizzou fans and watched the MU vs Illini game with great expectations that we can take this very pedestrian Tiger team.....then, I came home and read about the debacle at Memorial today.

Sh%t,p#ss, dam&*t to hell......we're going to get creamed by everyone!!!

What happened...or do I even want top know!! That's 8 straight losses dating back to last year. What is the Kansas record for consecutive losses???

ltownatrain 11 years, 4 months ago

Well KU went like 0-12 back after their orange bowl in 69 so I would start by looking there.

JayHawkFanToo 11 years, 4 months ago

Definition of insanity - Doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. Is HC Gill so bound and determined to erase any trace of HC Mangino that he chose to emphasize a non-existing inside running game instead of using the passing game that was at least partially working? The only time the running game worked is when they went to the outside; obviously the O Line needs a lot of work

Every time KU ran up the gut, it got stuffed; Sand had 18 yards in 10 carries, are you kidding me? I know that "tuxedo Tony" Sand had a great carrer at KU, but his kid did not show anything that deserved the playing time he got. We are soon going to realize how good of a QB Reesing really was; the current QB situation is not encouranging.

How soon before Oporum is back at RB? KUs could have used him carrying the ball today; he couldn't have been any worse than the inisde running game I saw.

Best performers for KU, Paterson followed by McDougald and Beshears; worst..Biere. Overall grade for the offense, F...3 points against North Dakota State does not deserve a passing grade. Overall grade for the defense B.

And, please...bring back the players names on the jerseys!!!

ZDKC 11 years, 4 months ago

I agree about the jerseys. Apparently some idiot (Gill) thought that some kumbaya team crap would magically make a team with mediocre skill magically win the BSC championship. Well guess what, this isn't the Might Ducks, and Emilio Estevez is not the coach. Put the damn names back on the jerseys.

JayHawkFanToo 11 years, 4 months ago

Oops, that should be Tony and Deshaun Sands...

jayhawkintexas 11 years, 4 months ago

This game was absolutely pathetic. I seriously doubt if Turner Gill is a Big XII caliber coach. He is probably a good guy and a good role model but I have serious doubts about his ability to win in the Big XII. Get ready for a long season and a return to the Terry Allen years of losing football, even with better players than in the Terry Allen era.

mjhawkchalk 11 years, 4 months ago

Successful season: Starting Toben Opurum (Quigley sucks), Never let Jordan Webb see the field again (He sucks) and last toughen Biere up ( Can't fumble twice).

d2psugrad 11 years, 4 months ago

I thought Webb showed a strong arm, he only got 2 drives and had Biere not fumbled, who knows. I think we are better than what was shown, but GA Tech is really scary now.

mjhawkchalk 11 years, 4 months ago

It wasn't like Pick did bad, he made, for the most part, smart throws. Gill had him run the ball more and he got out of his rhythm.

FTC_Jayhawk 11 years, 4 months ago

What you call "smart throws," I call timid decisions that will never allow the KU offense to put an opposing defense in tight spots over the course of an entire game.

Also, Pick is the one that threw an interception.

KGphoto 11 years, 4 months ago

Quigley has the highest ypg in the last decade.

It's the weak heart that killed KU today. Everybody thought Gill's big talk would inspire the team through adversity. The players relied on it. The fans leaned that way too. Everybody wanted it to come easy.

Now Gill can't walk down the street. It's his own fault, in a way.

FTC_Jayhawk 11 years, 4 months ago

Biere needs to take up a new sport. I think it's too late for him to effectively change positions, and he appears to be have about the worst set of hands I have ever seen on a tight end. Have you ever seen another player drop all but two passes for the whole night, and fumble within a half second on the two "catches."

I thought Jordan Webb looked better than Pick tonight. Pick either couldn't see his open receivers downfield or else he was not aggressive/confident enough to throw to them. I don't think there is much chance he will be MORE confident after this game. Webb had an advantage in that he knew he absolutely had to be aggressive down the field by the time he got his chance, but I still think Pick looked off way too many open downfield receivers to give this offense much chance to be successful.

Patterson looked good. We need someone to get him the ball where he can do more with it.

Jeff Coffman 11 years, 4 months ago

Now we know why Turner didn't want the names on the Jersey, so the day after game we couldn't identify which players did poorly.

I can't believe a QB friendly coach (and also Offensive coordinator) chose to pull the QB that they believed in in the 4th qtr, when we were still in the game.

Mangino_Maniac 11 years, 4 months ago

I totally agree... I would've like to have seen Pick stay in the game at that moment.

Goldenhawk 11 years, 4 months ago

I only had to watch the 1st five minutes and knew KU's defense stunk. They represented a Div 2 or 3 squad that could compete with Washburn & CSM.

I thought it was odd the offense threw out a trick play early in the game and it showed weakness going against a weak opponent before a big time game against GT.

I never did understand the hiring of Gilled. Tuberville wanted to be KU's coach and was much more qualifed and not even interviewed. Is this discrimination?

Thanks to Perkins we are the laughing stock of the nation and have returned to futility football.

mjhawkchalk 11 years, 4 months ago

You are an idiot. You really think there was discrimination involved in Gill's hiring over Tubberville? I hope you were using sarcasm....

d2psugrad 11 years, 4 months ago

Could not be discrimination when Tubberville did not get the chance to interview, just a retarded A.D.

KU_FanSince75 11 years, 4 months ago

Oakville---sounds like it was a peaceful day with your in-laws. Should have stayed there. Like a true fan, I watched the game on TV, muted it and listened to Bob Davis on the radio broadcast--watched it until the bitter end. It is a continuation of the losing streak that Mangino left us from last season---that is quite frustrating, to say the least. I wouldn't be surprised if there is a "For Sale" sign in Turner Gill's yard tomorrow although, that person would be a fool, if that happened. However, I could see it happening after this season if the team goes 0-12.

mjhawkchalk 11 years, 4 months ago

Jhawkrulz, we were always in the game, until the final 35 seconds. If we are going to stand a shot at reaching a bowl this season, we need Opurum to get us yards! Angus had 17 total yards! Send up Bourbon or Sims. Our Defense was fine (which was something Clint Bowen could never coach and I blame him for a crap last year), Gill needs to decide now if he wants Opurum or not.

Spencer Goff 11 years, 4 months ago

Just a few thoughts:

Well, no more Fighting Manginos….I miss you, Coach!

How does Lew plan to pay for the new stadium addition? (his pay check)

Does anyone have a prediction for our next game? ( 69 - 0 )

Hard to believe that 3 pts may be our high score for the season.

Uncle Fester, it is time for you to go!

ZDKC 11 years, 4 months ago

This is what we get for hiring a coach with Obama credentials. (ie a coach that could barely compile a .500 record in the MAC)

mjhawkchalk 11 years, 4 months ago

OK, he took the worst team known to man and turned it into a MAC championship team. And no he does not have Obama credentials (Obama has good credentials).

ZDKC 11 years, 4 months ago

You do realize that the year Gill won the MAC, he had a 5-3 conference record and a 8-6 overall record (best of his career). This is what it takes to win the MAC.

Well guess what? This is not Special Olympic MAC football. This is a D1 BSC conference --in more recent times, arguably one of the best football conferences in the nation.

Jeff Coffman 11 years, 4 months ago

He was 20-30 in the MAC...he didn't have a 500 record.

truman1902 11 years, 4 months ago

Confusion on the sidelines equaled confusion on the field. The bad karma began when the tuba player tripped on the field after sprinting out of the tunnel. Tim Biere will get more reps than he can deal with this week, and will redeem this lapse into the dark side. The sideline assistant coaches had better right this battleship and deliver their charges from Squirrelville. Coach Gill will NOT let this night decide his legacy. Past & present Cornhuskers do NOT take losing well. GLAD NOT to be part of THIS week's practice regimen..On the bright side, global warming is not likely to hit North Dakota this winter! At least we got that goin' for us!

d2psugrad 11 years, 4 months ago

Damn that tuba player and th voodoo hex! they will get better, but this loss is tough to swallow and GA Tech is not exactly a confidence inspiring rebound game.

ZDKC 11 years, 4 months ago

Oh yeah and our TE Biere (#86) needs to be demoted to waterboy -- that is if his stone hands can keep a grasp on the cups)

Ibajayhawk 11 years, 4 months ago

Maybe turner could try pulling his team together, instead of seperating them and making some of the players feel like they didn't belong and would rather be anywhere but at pratice or the game watching their team get the crap kicked out of them by a team that didn't even belong on the same field as them. He is a egomaniac and still thinks Big 12 football can still be played by the run alone. I still don't see why he was chosen over some of the other applicants that had better resumes. But mainly my point is that Gill needs to remember that if all of the players aren't 'his guys' then how good are the scout teams going to play and prepare the starters for the game. And I don't want to hear anything about they should want to play their best all of the time, because a bad coach can take the 'wanna' right out of an athlete even a pro.

d2psugrad 11 years, 4 months ago

How did Tubberville do at his opener at TX Tech? Lew snubbed him and did not even grant an interview. I certainly hope Gill does not let this define his tenure, but it is definitely uphill from that opening act!

d2psugrad 11 years, 4 months ago

Guess we will find out about Tuberville tomorrow - my bad I thouht they were playing SMU today.

Brennan Keller 11 years, 4 months ago

Another question i have is can Tim Biere catch the ball???

Uhjh 11 years, 4 months ago

One word pathetic!! Gill needs to be shown the door this year period. Pick was stupid as a QB throwing into traffic and no zip to his passes. Webb looked a lot better but the receivers let him down. The offensive team looked like a bunch of prima donnas who just expected to win and did not play the game of football. I hate to say this but give me Mangino. At least his team played the game.

Sparko 11 years, 4 months ago

This was the most humiliating game ever. And I have been a fan since the 1960s. Wow. No wonder there are no names on the jerseys. I still think Keegan is a load. So we have nothing to look forward to.

Mandie Eutsler 11 years, 4 months ago

I was disappointed that he was so passive. There were a few 4th downs we should have went for. The defense was playing well enough to keep a 1 AA team from scoring a touchdown, why not go for it on the 35. He seemed to turn Pick into a weenie too. He had opportunities to tuck the ball and run, stand up in the pocket and fire away, or dump off a pass. I am just not used to such a wait and see offense like we had tonight. I hate that big ten smashmouth run the ball 3 yards at a time football. BORING! Take some chances, throw the ball when it's not 3rd down. Boring ass game, I felt like I was at a big ten game... or a baseball game...

KU08 11 years, 4 months ago

Lol, 6-3 does seem like a baseball score. The Royals actually lost 6-4 today!

I didn't watch the game (not televised where I live), but I can't imagine a 9pt total scoring game to be anything but utter boredom. KU might have to do what the Royals have done and turn game days into more like going to a picnic than seeing a game. You go for the sights, beautiful fountains, cheap hot dogs, condiment races, and, oh yeah, there's a game going on. Sweet!

David Leathers 11 years, 4 months ago

Toben Operum to Linebacker? Seriously?

In my opinion, Operum may have got us the win just on his running ability alone.

'Nuff said

KU08 11 years, 4 months ago

I think Gill's a really good guy and excellent role model, so I'd be crazy not to want him to succeed, but I think he's going up against a curse - The Curse of the Great Mangino. I'm pretty sure it was the right thing to do to pretty much force Mangino out, but he was by far the greatest coach in KU football history. (Granted, the second greatest off the top of my head was either Phog Allen or the one-season Fielding Yost, so there wasn't too much competition in that category.) Sometimes, when a team loses someone who was so very critical to success, that team cannot recover for a great deal of time (e.g. Chiefs, for one - I still miss Schottenheimer). I'm willing to give Gill a full season with hope to see some strides that will at least make speculation for 2011 positive. Maybe Webb will step in and be a star like Reesing did in that Colorado game in 2004? That doesn't mean we should give up on 2010, but I agree with a lot of posters on here that basketball season cannot arrive soon enough!

gardenjay 11 years, 4 months ago

Give me a break - any team would be losers with fans like these. You have to see the good in the team and grow from there.

I truly was excited to see Webb's arm out there, and hope we see more of him this season. The defense was supposed to be terrible - ha! It looks great. Furthermore, do you think the new coach wants to win games? 'cause I think he does. There are some things going right out there. Now, let's all just get ready for harvest and chill until the next game.

Brennan Keller 11 years, 4 months ago

harvest????? r u sure your not a kstate fan haha

KU08 11 years, 4 months ago

Your calmness is much appreciated! I didn't see the game, so all I can take from it is 3 points for the offense. I hope Webb is as good as some people on this site are saying he looked!

ZDKC 11 years, 4 months ago

Do you know anything about D1 football?

d2psugrad 11 years, 4 months ago

I definitely think we are a better team than NDSU, but I think we ran out the staff that would have had us bowl eligible this season. I agree, Webb showed that he had some zip on the ball and it is a shame that Biere fumbled after vthat first down catch. He was a solid TE last year and just had a horrific performance tonight. That drive might have made the difference.

KU_FanSince75 11 years, 4 months ago

Damn--I looked to see how many people commented on this thread----88 comments---I go away for a few moments and it is up to 168---probably more now. Do ya think the Jayhawk Nation have something to say??!!

@ TexasJayhawk78--I don't know what the Georgia Tech score will be next week but saw highlights of their game of whoever they played---South Carolina State??

Anyway, the quarterback for GA. Tech is a beast and runs like a freight train. I guess it is a good thing the game starts at 11 am--get it over with. And assuming the Jayhawks lose to GA. Tech, probably a good thing they hit the road to play a game--unfortunately, it is at Southern Miss. on a Friday night--probably another loss. Good thing I will be at my hometown high school football game that night.

kertupnorth 11 years, 4 months ago

I'm not so sure that part of the problem here is that people were wanting to believe that we were better than we are. Remember that we lost our last 7 games with Reesing and company last year. We also knew our defense has basically no playmakers coming into this season. Any yet people wanted to believe that because players were happy to play for Gill that we would somehow win 6 or 7 games. It wasn't going to happen. that an excuse for what happened today? Hell no. That was a coaching disgrace. Having said that...I'm not ready to sell Gill down the river yet. He deserves a year to get them playing well (I didn't say winning...I said playing well). This was not going to be a winning season period. However, I'm under the same belief as someone that posted earlier...if we're going to pay a guy what we pay coaches these days, they need to win...and they damn sure better beat NDSU. I just hope he can get a handle on this quickly, or it could become ugly. I'm feeling some of our 70-0 beatings of yesteryear coming on.

Regardless what happens though, these are our Jayhawks. Be a proud fan whether they're winning or losing. Our guys deserve better than to have people abandoning them after one game. They deserve our support.

Jim Pendleton 11 years, 4 months ago

There have been enough bad comments tonight, most warranted, so I am not going to re-hash a lot of that, but suffice it to say, I am very disappointed, and that comes from someone who likes to find positives to the negatives everyone else says about us.

As bad as everything went tonight, one play I have not heard or seen anyone comment on occurred right after the score went to 6-3. Beshears had a great kickoff return going, and got shoelace tackled at mid-field by the kicker! The @#$% kicker! If he gets by him, it's a touchdown, and despite all the problems tonight, the momentum swings the other way and we probably win.

I do agree with a couple posters - kualuminohio and xdisciple. Everyone I talked to after the game raised the question of how did we get to this point, two and a half years after the Orange Bowl, and one and a half years after the Insight Bowl. We supposedly were taking advantage of our successes and new facilities, and instead we somehow arrive at this point. With all that going for us, you would figure at worst, we would be a middle of the road team and make some bowl each year.

What's really hard to believe are the many turnarounds we are now seeing. Three years ago we scored 76 on Nebraska and now they are a top ten team again. We beat KSU by 31 two years ago, we were still supposed to be better last year, and we somehow lost that, and now they are winning games against name programs like UCLA (not great I know, but still a name). Oklahoma lost five games last year. Okla State was supposed to be down after losing many of their offensive stars, yet they score 65 against Wash State (yes bad team, but from a BCS league). Same can be said for many teams around the country.

We must demand excellence from this program. There is no excuse for this program to have fallen this far in such a short time, new coach or not. The facilities and the teams we play every year should allow us to continually bring in above average talent.

xdisciple's post was basically saying what I always say. Despite how bad tonight was, and that we don't know how the immediate future will be, please do not give up on this program. We must have Jayhawk Nation in the stands. I have said it before and I will say it again - you want to be like the big boys, then act like the big boys. That means being there to support your team win or lose.

Finally, one more thing to all you basketball posters. Did those of you at the game tonight hear the announcement that there were still basketball tickets for sale? This so-called basketball school actually has tickets still for sale. Not to pick on one sport or the other, but our major sports need to be sold out on a season basis, every year. Stay with the program, and demand we keep trying to be the best. There is no law that says you can only be great in one sport. Rock Chalk!

Christopher Hauser 11 years, 4 months ago

There was a block in the back on the return so even if he would have scored it would have come back anyway.

ibleedku 11 years, 4 months ago

If you watch that highlight of Beshears' kickoff return....he goes for 6 if that effing #33 picked up his block. He runs right past the guy...

ZDKC 11 years, 4 months ago

Oh yeah, and the stats on our tight end, Biere (#86), are as follows (in case you forgot).

Biere dropped three passes, all on third down, and fumbled his only two receptions.

Andrew Washington 11 years, 4 months ago

This was a horribly disappointing loss, but i still think turner gill is capable of turning this team around. He is a positive person and i believe that he can learn from his mistakes and become better from them. this team will improve- the only question is how much and will it be enough??

KU_FanSince75 11 years, 4 months ago

kertupnorth---Just to let you know. . . . . regardless of what happens, I will still cheer on my Jayhawks. I don't know what the future holds for Turner Gill. I wish him well. Having lived in Lawrence during the Ted Owens and Don Fambrough days, though, I know what happens to coaches when they don't win. You can say that too, about Terry Allen.

@jim80--totally with you on North Dakota State's kicker making the game-saving tackle on Beshears. How could that happen?

Now, Turner Gill, instead of feeling nervous, you gotta feeling the pressure. Sorry to hear that your parents, who haven't seen you coach at the D1 level before, had to sit through this game that saw the Jayhawks score only three points. Unbelievable!

kranny 11 years, 4 months ago

Wow, I was completely stunned during the game. I was just apout to leave but decided to accept the inevitable and I started to watch it analytically as a scout would(being a former coach). First off, I think our defense is decent except our line needs to quit thinking and standing and just go nuts and play. They are always shifting and switching as the linebackers call out formations and at numerous times NDSU snapped the ball while we were in mid shift and out of position. I think our linebackers need to crowd the line more, blitz and not have to call formations. Offensively, My wife and I looked at each other and shook our heads when our first long play was a semi trick reverse to Daymon Patterson. The hawks have good skill players but the O-line is simply not very good at all. T. Hawkinson looked simply lost. They couldn't pick up simple shifts and their hesitation cost us a lot of sacks, hurries, and near sacks. Save for the Daymon Patterson plays our run blocking was simply horrible. Every huddle looked like a group study session for a final. The huddle broke into formation with under 10 seconds on numerous occasions. Everyone around us started counting down with 6 seconds left and they barely got the ball off. There was no rhythm and no momentum. I can't completely blame Pick because with all the near sacks, and collapsing pockets, I know he heard footsteps which leads to bad decisions. I also don't understand how a 4 star running back in Opurum doesn't see the field. He was the leading rusher from last year and arguably should have remained the starting back even after Sharp returned. He gets moved to linebacker and I honestly don't remember seeing him or hearing his name called. If he's in the doghouse and not playing because of that that's one thing but we've heard no indication of that. There's a reason Quigley didn't play running back much the past 5 years- IT'S BECAUSE HE WASN'T VERY GOOD AT IT. PUT OPURUM BACK TO RUNNING BACK!!! Also Foster is listed as the starting fullback but Beshears and Quigley line up in the T formation. Bottom line is this, Coach Gill had better get a sense of urgency. He needs to realize that this is the Big 12 and expectations are higher. He needs to understand that he doesn't have the luxury of the feeling that "there's nowhere to go but up" like he had at Buffalo. . He needs to understand that having names on the backs of jersey's might actually help the coaches know who's supposed to be in the game. Funny how we put names on helmets during practice so we can identify players but take them off so we can "adhere to a philosophy" during a game. This game was a big wake up call. We'll be lucky to win a game this year. I guess Jayhawk nation needs to decide what it's willing to live with. I'm not quite ready to throw anybody under the bus yet. But, I can't help but think that as one poster put it, there's a certain overweight former coach who is quietly chuckling to himself.

ZDKC 11 years, 4 months ago

Nice post. I pretty much agreed with the entire thing.

Somebody check Biere's checking account balance when the banks open Tuesday. On a related note, does anyone know what the line on the game was?

Travis Shinkle 11 years, 4 months ago

KU by 27...everyone in the world thought KU was going to blow out NDSU

Cal Bender 11 years, 4 months ago

In addition to thoughts about the poor coaching, the disorganization, the lack of enthusiam of both coaches and players, and the poor playing, think how embarassing it must have been to Gill to have made such a big, public fuss about his family being at the game today to watch his debut as head coach at a class university, and have them see his team lose so disgracefully to a Division II school. And if he's impervious to being embarassed by the loss, certainly his family was terribly embarassed. Also, now everyone knows why our offensive coordinator was unceremoniously fired at San Diego State University. The team's offensive coaching is truly offensive!

Michael Leiker 11 years, 4 months ago

Anybody else seeing the posts other places about there being only 10 people on the field during 3 punts tonight? Another thing to add to the list of inexcusables, but for me this just screams that Gill is not ready for this job. If this team goes 0 for the non con, I hope this administration has the guts to do what needs to be done and cut our losses immediately.

KU_FanSince75 11 years, 4 months ago

JayDoc---Vegas doesn't publish the lines when a D1 team plays a D2 school (North Dakota State). Sam Houston State played at Baylor and there was no line on that game, as well.

Question--feel free to chime in---are you surprised that there was hardly any emotion from the Jayhawks tonight? And then, when I listened to Turner Gill during the press conference after game, it was his monotone voice that was disturbing--no emotion. Is it just me, or should Turner Gill be more upset that the Jayhawks lost? I can't put my finger on this!

Michael Leiker 11 years, 4 months ago

One thing on Gill's attitude that I just do not think you can ignore. This guy played against horrible Kansas teams in the 80s. He naturally sees Kansas as a loser. He coached with Nebraska during some of the worst Husker beat downs of KU in history. It cannot be possible to walk into this situation, as Turner Gill, with his personality, and truly convey to this team that you expect and demand for this team to win football games. Every time I hear him talk I become more and more convinced that he just sees this as acceptable at Kansas. Maybe he can convince himself in his mind that he expects Kansas to win every time they step on the field, but I am not convinced in his heart he believes that. He has approached this situation as rebuilding and you cannot tell me that this team hasn't caught onto that.

JayDocMD 11 years, 4 months ago

  1. Whoever said these coaches don't know how to utilize their own players was right on.
  2. Lets not re-invent the wheel. Move Opurum back to RB ASAP.
  3. Lets start looking for our next Off Coordinator yesterday.
  4. I'm not ready to subscribe to yet, but he just lost 1.5 to 2 yrs off his 3 year grace period.

Tom Gillaspie 11 years, 4 months ago

Blah, blah, blah it's typical KU football. The brief reprieve of making it to the Orange Bowl was just that, brief. Done with football, marking the calendar until basketball season is under way.
See you in a couple of months.

actorman 11 years, 4 months ago

The only thing more predictable than death and taxes was that every Turner Gill critic would be clamoring that things would be so much better if only we had kept that abusive a-h*** who cost us countless games with his stupid game-day decisions.

Was this performance truly putrid, pathetic and every other word to signify miserable? Yes. Does that mean that Turner Gill is going to be another Terry Allen and there's no possibility of improvement? Maybe, but only complete morons can truly believe that one game--no matter how horrible it may have been--signifies a pattern. We'll just have to wait and see. But I have no doubt that if this year or next or in a couple of years things have turned around and KU becomes a solid program under Gill, all of the people who are now being so negative will do mea culpas and admit they were wrong, right? Right???

Andy Tweedy 11 years, 4 months ago

Thank you, actorman! One game does not anything make. The offensive line was AWFUL. Maybe that's why Gill has recruited a whole bus full of them. Seems maybe he saw this coming. Pick wasn't good, but Webb wasn't really much better. I was at the game, and the only drive Webb lead us on was aided by 35 yards in penalties. But the D did look pretty good at times.

Michael Leiker 11 years, 4 months ago

Mangino cost us games that he was solely responsible for putting us in a position to win. Our new coach just cost us a game that somebody else put him in a position to win.

Brian Conrad 11 years, 4 months ago

Football? please bring on BB and Josh cleared to play! more interested in BB recruiting than this mess.. Gill will be ok in long run .. but he was deer in headlights today..Only thing would make this month great Josh cleared but they find mud on Kentucky.. oh just dreaming.. KU football spread should be 60 next week.

ZDKC 11 years, 4 months ago

Not to be a Debbie Downer, but remember when you say "The D looked good" or "That guy looked good" you're judging this off a IAA team who's majority of players played 9 man football in high school. In other words, take these with a grain of salt. Any decent team is going to look good against an opponent such as North Dakota State A&M Technical/Vocational College of Liberal Arts and Underwater Horseback Riding.

Jim Pendleton 11 years, 4 months ago

Sorry I have to technically correct all those who are saying we lost to a D2 school. Yes we lost to a lower classification school, to which there is no excuse for, don't care how good the lower school is or how bad the higher school is. It should never happen. But the class NDSt is in is Div 1-AA (now called FCS or something).

All the MIAA schools like NW Mo St (who won D2 national title last year), Cent Mo, Washburn, Ft Hays, Emporia, Pitt State, etc are actual D2 schools. As embarrassing as this loss was, it would have been even worse had we played an actual D2 school and lost. Can't even fathom that.

I see where many are still jumping in about basketball since my earlier posts. Hope you all saw my comment about them announcing at the game that season tickets for men's bb still available. If you are one of those people and don't have tickets, here is your big chance, so jump in.

In the meantime, there are many of us who despite the loss tonight will still support this team, and know that we need everyone on board to help us become one of the big boys which is what we all want. Rock Chalk!

d2psugrad 11 years, 4 months ago

Technically, Yes they are D1AA currently, but only recently did NDSU jump to 1AA. Pittsburg State beat NDSU in the early 90's, so this is very much like seeing the hawks lose to Washburn or Eporia State.

Maurice E. King III 11 years, 4 months ago

I was one who was trying to be open minded about the new coaching methods by Coach Gill. Positive reinforcement, no cussing, etc..... I have lost patience already. I don't want to see Coach Gill smile or grin until we have won at least 7 games in a season. I gain more and more respect for Bill Snyder every year because at 70+ years old he can still coach with the best of them. He can motivate and game plan as well as find talent in places KU dare not tread. Improvement is a must or he will have his exit papers in record time. I think the grin is because he still not believing KU is really paying him $3 million a year. Suckers!!!

FTC_Jayhawk 11 years, 4 months ago

Thank you - and good evening.

Bear86 11 years, 4 months ago

This has to be one of the lowest points in our school's history. Turner Gill F*#@$d this up beyond belief. Our home opener against a D2 school? I know we are going to have a transition year due to all the changes (new coach & players graduating/leaving) but this loss is almost unacceptable. I'm thankful I did not have to endure watching this debacle. I like Turner Gill the person but I'm not sure he can lead our team to the height's our University and Alumni expect (& we don't expect miracles but we expect to win games against D2 programs in Lawrence). What a disgrace.

Where is the talent on this football team? I understand and will not argue about the coaching, but are there any good players on this team? SxxT happens (look at Ole Miss) but I see a Kansas team with no talent.

I watched some other games today and I don't think KU has one player who could start for any team in the top 10 - not one. You can blame Gill or Mangino or Perkins, but this team is horrible. And I have watched some terrible KU teams in the past.

Everyone knew that KU would struggle this year, but Gill better be an amazing recruiter because this team needs an injection of talent fast. It is already on life support. If we don't beat New Mexico State, then the Jayhawks probably go 0-12. That is riduculous. Patience is fine, but Saturday was a joke.

kufanman88 11 years, 4 months ago

Gill has already had a recruiting class and a half since his hire (with early signing) and there is absolutely no indication that Gill can recruit to be competitive at the Big 12 level. NONE. I said this when he was hired. He will not last longer than 2 years, if he can even get out of this year without resigning. If he goes 0-12. He resigns.

packywacky88 11 years, 4 months ago

KU has somehow been cursed. We need to find out who or what it is and have it eliminated. Did Lew kick a midget or something?

There was a reason Dr Tom picked Pelini over TG which you all just found out. Gill will eventually field a representative team, but it's not going to be a world beater either. The man deserves 3 years to have KU playing his type of ball... then make a decision about his future.

One thing I can promise KU fans is a severe beat down from the Huskers this year. Think of it as our going away present and it will easier to watch..... lol lol lol......

I guess Biere got a lot of 'pats on the back' yesterday... lol.

...and you have to understand this was NDSU! We were 27 point favorites for crying out loud.

Joe Ross 11 years, 4 months ago

27 point favorites, check. Playing Div. 1-AA school, check. Home field advantage, check. Opening day hype, check.

What the...?

HuskerMan 11 years, 4 months ago

I just threw up in my mouth a little bit. WTF Turner?

Justin Daniel 11 years, 4 months ago

jayhawkarmy - I understand it was the 1st game, but I am upset with why we are in this mess in the first place. Lew let go a coach that took us to back to back bowls for this. Then he passed on several experienced coaches for Gill, I doubt Tuberville would have lost to NDS. Now he will be gone in a year and KU football will be right back where it was 12 years ago. I am not nearly as frustrated wil Coach Gill as I am with Perkins.

Dyrk Dugan 11 years, 4 months ago

it was a very bad first game....and a lot of new players were playing different spots, and a new system and so on....but this staff should have recognized that we HAD to win this game. you don't lose to a non FBS team in your opener.

all that being said, this team will get better. and all the Mangino coming back talk, and the Turner Gill era over after two years and so's basically all nonsense. Turner Gill is our head coach...and he deserves at least four or five years to get his players/systems in place.

yes, we want everything yesterday, in our high speed mobile connections, microwave world....but good sustainable, big time college sports programs still takes years to build.

Mangino didn't have a good football team till year four, and then he had great, good team in years six and seven...and then it quickly evaporated. The University of Kansas, is just one of several examples in the country of legendary mens college basketball programs...that can't win consistently in football. Duke, IU, UNC, UK have all gone through the same or similar struggles....(and which of those schools have won a BCS bowl game? answer: none. but KU has).

so we have to enjoy our successes when we get them...and we have to trust in our new head coach. He's the head coach folks....and he's going to be here awhile. we have to support him and the players.

Nick Cole 11 years, 4 months ago

Geesh Matt Tate, bring up a really bad memory before writing about the most recent one. Thanks a-hole. Rub some salt on that wound for the fans why don't you? Jerk.

Fact is, the loss to UNI has nothing to do with this story. Just leave it out. I wish you people at this publication wouldn't be so quick to bring these bad memories back into focus. Just knock it off already!

steamboat 11 years, 4 months ago

Mangino wasn't much to look at but his teams were disciplined. This is an all time low!!!!!!!!!!!!! 3 points against a D-2 team. I hope perkins is happy with his hire. He and Gill needs to be put on the first bus out of Lawrence and btw take Self with 'em after that non-coaching fiasco last March. A pathetic display of competiveness at KU.

steamboat 11 years, 4 months ago

Gill light a fire?? Hell he wasn't in any hurry to look at game tape. You get beat the way we did you better be calling for a practice at midnight. He must be scared he's gonna run off the remaining Mangino pussies. Maybe he needs too, our season is done anyway he needs to find out who wants to play. It's called discipline so Man Up!!! Most people will keep Self if they are satisfied with early exits to the likes of Bucknell, Bradley Northern Iowa. So we win the Big 12? That means we are better than 11 other teams. Big Deal the talent that has come through KU should take us to the Final 4 every year. Focus? I see both major sports at KU as soft but aslong as we win 30 games a year (half of those are cupcakes) life at KU is good.. NOT!!!!!!

steamboat 11 years, 4 months ago

If he's not here to win then he won't disappoint us!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Any chance we can get our money back on the USELESS gym equipment and buildings surrounding Memorial Stadium? Perhaps a real football school that needs equipment would bid for it on eBay. Heck, sell the stadium too! Doesn't Freestate need a place to play?

troutsee 11 years, 4 months ago

I have always been a gill fan from the beginning but did wonder why we did not hire tubberville. I certainly exspected more than what I saw tonight. We were disorganized and tentative. Our O-line flat out stunk!!!!! So, it's a little difficult to be too hard on Pick. We certainly need more timing pattern in our passing game so Pick or Webb can get the ball out quicker. I think both held onto the ball too long. Long's play calling was horrible and freqauently led to Pick having to throw in obvious passing situations. Many of you thought our defense played well. Sorry, I don't agree. There offense seemed to attack with purpose, i.e. a game plan but our defensive philosophy was supposed to be more aggressive and more attacking and more take-away....well...sorry I simply did not see it. Also on special teams, Rojas is a big blow-hard and has always taken too long to get his punts off. The NDSU punter was much better. I have always been a Branstetter fan, but let's face it, in spite of his 56 yearder (wind aided) last year, he does not have a big leg.

However, the most disturbing of all to me is that WE WERE OUTTOUGHED.

Hopefully we will be better organized for next week's game. As optimistic as I am, after watching this vulgar display of Jayhawk football, I think we are in for a real ass kicking next week.

I agree with those who said that it is only one game, but the overall team performance was so poor that it is hard to see us winning any games this year.

Joe Ross 11 years, 4 months ago

Ok. Here's the thing.

We all want the football program to be successful. Yes, we are a basketball school and we can appease ourselves with the hardcourt in a couple of months. But 2008 showed me that the fervor on campus was stoked when the football team was also performing well.

It appears to me that Gill doesn't understand that and that his hire by Lew Perkins really didn't take seriously the need to restore a football tradition on campus. The alumni are having fits, I assure you. Mangino is reclined somewhere in an armchair saying, "I told you so." And 11 other teams around the country are marking "W's" on their schedule for their meeting with KU.

When will we take our football program seriously?

This is a JOKE!

...and a really bad one.

Michael Bratisax 11 years, 4 months ago

This is what happens when you fire the most successful coach in KU history. I wonder if Don Fambrough is available?

Maracas 11 years, 4 months ago

Thank you Turner Gill. You've managed, in a single game, to take this football program to rock bottom. And you and your staff are completely overpaid for doing so. Ridiculously overpaid. All the talk. All the promise. And you gave us a high school team.

There is absolutely no excuse to lose to a team like NDSU. None whatsoever. Terry Allen would have won that game. Ron Prince would have won that game.

Please consider moving on very soon . . . end of the month would be fine. Thank you for your time, but we need a real coach who has a clue.

Lew Perkins needs to admit he made a mistake. This team was even more unprepared and clueless than any Allen or Val team. It was embarrassing and Gill needs to admit he is an awful coach and move along.

Georgia Tech is going to lay waste to our program next week. That should be the nail in the coffin for Mr. Gill and his band of clown assistants.

HuskerMan 11 years, 4 months ago

The entire staff is on suicide watch. Adidas needs to send pull on shoes so there are no shoe strings to hang themselves in the coaches office.

stahlin 11 years, 4 months ago

Terrible play calling and worse execution on offense. Props to the D. That said, if Pick is in the game, why aren't we running the option? Why aren't we running the ball under center? How about some power I like you were talking about all off season??? The tackles are terrible. Biere has hands that go clank in the night. What a disappointment he was. I haven't seen hands that bad since Johnny Depp in Edward Scissorhands. I assume he's not an OL b/c he can't block either. We are going to lose every game.

Is it possible to get Fambrough?

HuskerMan 11 years, 4 months ago

Dude, that was way funny. Stats for 86: 3 clunks, 2 catches resulting in fumble, 0 blocks.

khummel60 11 years, 4 months ago

I know I'm gonna get flamed for this, but I'm actually still hopeful. Here's why. First, while NDSU started out the game blowing holes through our D-Line, the defense quickly adjusted and played well the second half. Second, with the exception of the quarterback and place kicker we saw good play at the skill positions. McDougald, Patterson, and Wilson showed glimpses of greatness, and the D-Backs and Linebackers played well. I know, .... this was NDSU, but still - holding a team to 200 yards and 6 points is pretty respectable. As for the quarterback position, we have by all accounts two incredibly talented kids in Pick and Webb. One of them is going to establish themselves as a gamer. Webb looked like more of a winner last night, but that's probably not fair after one game. As for Branstetter, does anyone seriously think he's gonna continue to miss field goals like that? The biggest concern in my mind is the O-Line, which consistently got manhandled. But we saw this last year with Reesing running for his life game after game, so why is it a surprise? Overall the Jayhawks looked like a team that isn't comfortable yet with a new system and new coaching staff. Gill and staff will make many adjustments this week and I believe Kansas will play much better next weekend. Will it be enough to beat G-Tech - probably not - but I don't think we'll get embarrassed.

Dan Harris 11 years, 4 months ago

"Will it be enough to beat G-Tech?" Hell NO! and it will be embarrassing to the tune of 45-10 or some such.

Jeff Coffman 11 years, 4 months ago

We scored 3 points against NDSU, but you think we are going to score 10 points against GT...I'm thinking we will be shut out a few times this year, and this might be the first time.

I'm looking forward to Lousiana Tech, because it is a game, that we may be competitive in, the only one left in our schedule.

FLJHK 11 years, 4 months ago

I was not able to see or hear the game, but in retrospect I guess that's a blessing. Certainly embarassing and humiliating.

I'm reminded though, of a situation here in Tampa quite some time back. The lowly Bucs hired a coach named Tony Dungy. Like Gill, Dungy was a black man, deeply religious, highly ethical, and adverse to emotion. At first the results weren't there, the Bucs just kept on losing and Bucs fans were saying he's in over his head and were ready to send him packing. But Dungy deflected all the criticism, held steady, and eventually the players bought in, and soon the Bucs were a powerhouse.

Obviously, it is more difficult to envision such a scenario in the college ranks, because unlike the NFL where the bad teams are rewarded with high draft picks, at the college level the system is such that the rich just get richer in terms of recruiting. Further, I've no way to know if Gill has the astute football mind of a Tony Dungy.

But in any event, we've no choice but to hope a similar transition occurs at KU. Most important is to see how the players, coaches and fans can react to this adversity. One game, sad as it was, is no way to judge the progress of a program. Gill needs and deserves ample time to communicate his message and institute his system. I have to believe he is up to the task and that there were solid reasons for his hiring. Certainly the comments of many of his former players and the football community in Buffalo allow for some optimism. I'm not saying he gets an unlimited free pass, but a healty bit of patience, not a virtue among many college fans, is needed and deserved.

Overcoming adversity is the true meaning of character, and in college football it doesn't get much more adverse than yesterday's game. But the test will be in seeing how this team reacts over the course of this season. We're unlikely to see much relative to wins and losses, but rather in how they prepare, whether they improve and the degree to which all buy in to Gill's leadership. It will indeed be a major challenge.

I did not see a single play of the game. I couldn't even find it on radio. From all I have read I am drawing some conclusions, but I have a question. Was most of our running game inside the tackles? Did we even run the option? If so, how many times?

Randy Bombardier 11 years, 4 months ago

I was a big believer in Big M. I thought the whole player thing was a mutiny led by a few players who went directly to Lew. Total speculation on my part. It seemed to be a witch hunt that entailed a preconceived fire Mark Mangino. I was very incensed about it. Yet, after it was all said and done I moved on and after an initial unfavorable position on Gill, did an about face, mostly because of what kind of man he is.

My heart aches for Coach Gill, his family, and all the staff and players right now. I hope this is a very loud wake-up call. It sounds like the team was not prepared at all. I see this primarily as a coaching mistake. Mismanagement of the time outs concerns me. That we were apparently trying to run between the tackles and seldom employed the option concerns me. That the offensive line did not look good concerns me. I have a lot of concerns right now.

I like Gill's values and ideals, but in a very real sense, college football today is business and if he wants to be able to instill those values over the long haul he needs to put more effort into getting this house in order. If KU had played well and lost is one thing, but to preside over chaos and espouse the values that he does creates a lack of credibility in him AND what he is trying to do. Kind of like, "faith without works is dead". Hard words I know, but I want this man to succeed.

Randy Bombardier 11 years, 4 months ago

Does anybody know if Craig Bohl is related to Al Bohl?

HuskerMan 11 years, 4 months ago

How many points do you think KU will score vs. NDSU?

0-20 21-28 29-35 36-42 43-49 50 or more

steamboat 11 years, 4 months ago

I saw it and I picked 0-20. They should of had a column for 0-5 and I still would of guessed it right. 3 points.... hell we had more turnovers than that didn't we?? UN FRICKIN BELIEVABLE. Lowest of all times at KU

Bee Bee 11 years, 4 months ago

Zero talent and zero coaching = 0 and 12.
Having said that has anyone noticed the size, (or lack of) of the KU players? Our kids look like junior high or high school players compared to other D1 schools. Hell they looked small compared to a D2 school! Apparently the MILLIONS that were spent on FACILITIES didnt include a WEIGHT ROOM!! It s time to stop recuiting 220 D linemen!!! Very few of the KU players are bulked up or LOOK STRONG! It's time to hit the WEIGHTS BOYS!

By the way.......would it be to much to ask that the 6ft 7 300lb O linemen actually block somebody???? How about just get in the way and make the defense go AROUND YOU!!!!!

I hope Coach TG hasnt unpacked the moving van. This program is a JOKE! Call Mangino and apologize, LEW!!!!!

PS At least televise the game in HIGH DEF. It was more brutal trying to watch it in the 1950s format of standard def. Step your GAME UP KU!!!!

Want another warning? Because of this, KU will be in the WAC or Mountain West by 2015.

I'm joining, and if I knew it was around in December, I would have done the same thing.

Oh remember when we were looking for coaches, and Tuberville, Harbough, Nutt, and Fulmer were in the conversations....

hailtoku 11 years, 4 months ago

"Players coach" blah blah blah....

Nick Saban, Urban Meyer, Joe Paterno, Les Miles, Steve Spurrier, Jim Tressell..

Are these coaches a "players coach"?

I don't give a s*** how nice of a guy he is... my uncle is a hell of a nice guy, I don't want him coaching a football team.

Mangino_Maniac 11 years, 4 months ago

Exactly. When I heard he had a 'curse free' zone at practice, I had an odd feeling about things...

Mangino may have taken things to far the other way... maybe... but this is football, so it can't be 'too much nice' from the coaching staff.

By the way... Tuberville has Tech doubling up on SMU at the moment 35-17... sigh.

jaron_1984 11 years, 4 months ago

Ok so an embarrassing loss for sure, but I would be way more concerned if this was gave #4 in the Turner Gill era. Everyone's jumping ship like they expected this team to win the big 12! I didn't think we would lose to NDSU but with all the injuries and dismissals this team just isn't that good. The OL was suppose to be our strength but we couldnt run it last year so why did we expect to be able to this year? Why do you think we already have 6 OL commitments? Gill knows where the main issues are at.

He needs to focus on the following positions this year in recruiting...

OL - all around the board. DL - especially DT; we are so incredibly small it's stupid. LB - all around the board. CB - mainly to replace Harris for next year. K - can Branstetter just go away! How can he not have improved at all in 4 years?

And every other position not listed because we have zero depth throughout the entire team!

Christopher Hauser 11 years, 4 months ago

In defense of Biere, he got laid out on the last fumble. That was prob. a 50/50 for anyone to hang on to the ball. The first fumble was not acceptable. Don't remember seeing any offensive sets with a full back in the backfield, not that it would have prob. changed things. Defense looked slow and our defensive line got pushed around the whole game. NDSU was able to move the ball on the ground on a pretty regular basis and had open recievers most of the game. I am not even going to comment on the Offensive line and their inability to pick up defensive line stunts and shifts that are tought in junior high. The entire game plan both offensive and defensive looked disorganized and should be expected only from a level of football comparable to that of a bad high school team. All in all I believe that coaching was the main contributer to loosing this game not two fumbles. Biere should have never been in the position of a fumble making or breaking the outcome of this game. Mr. Biere, keep your head up, you are not the first athlete to fumble twice in a game and sure won't be the last. This may have been the worst loss in KU football history given the level of competition that was played. We can not accept irrelavence for our football program once again. We had a taste of the good life in 2007 and 2008 was not too bad. It is not acceptable to be good every 20-30 years and I hope this loss was not a precursor to that type of irrelavence.

Ibajayhawk 11 years, 4 months ago

I'll say this once again that Gill appears to me to be dishonest and not as great a role model as some of you may think, just because he doesn't swear and makes nice with some of the guys. Why do you think some of the recruits that were coming to KU decommited and went elsewhere. When you talk to to some of the players who have visited KU they come away from meeting Gill with some real doubts about his sincerity and honesty. Why didn't NU hire him, probably because he's plain and simple not that good of a coach, just a guy with a huge ego and an inability to apologize for his errors and screw-ups. I say see if Leach is willing to become a millionaire and stop the bleeding. Right now 1 and 10 is looking pretty good.

Hank Cross 11 years, 4 months ago

Who Cares?

I mean it. Who really cares. Look at the other storied BB programs - UNC, UK, Duke, UCLA, IU, UConn. See any great BCS teams there.

And let's think about all those great F4 teams from FB schools like 'Bama, USC, OU,, ND, Penn State.

You can only be great at one or the other. (I know Michigan and Florida won BB Nat'l C's, but those were rare abberations). Let's just focus at what we are good at. When Valesente was the coach, I would pick up my FB and BB tix (we had to buy FB to get BB) and promptly throw my FB tix away in the trash cans at Wescoe. The lack of support for FB sure didn't hurt Brown's teams.

KUbsee69 11 years, 4 months ago

Texas, OU, OSU have had a pretty good mix of FB & BB multiple times. Why not strive to both?

But wait, I thought that's what we were kind of doing under MM.

hailtoku 11 years, 4 months ago

UNC, UCLA and IU all have better football programs.

jmason 11 years, 4 months ago

Turner Gill meet Dan Hawkins. First game for Hawkins a loss to Montana St. First game for Gill a loss to N. Dakota St. At least Gill doesn't have a son to play QB for three years until figuring out he is no good. I hope this does not go like the five years of the Hawkins era in Boulder.

Mangino_Maniac 11 years, 4 months ago

We should've lured Tuberville here when we had the chance... he would've been ideal to pick-up things and gel with the situation here after Mangino.

Michael Bratisax 11 years, 4 months ago

Kensucky's football is usually near the bottom of the SEC but even they would walk over us this year. Being a BB school doesn't mean you cannot have at least a respectable football program but with the exception of a few bright spots every other decade or so, KU fields mid-major talent and Gill will not change that.

DevilHawk 11 years, 4 months ago

1) Quarterback situation: a. Pick only saw mop-up duty previously. b. Webb has never seen the field in D-1.

2) O-Line: a. Multiple injuries. b. Players were moved to different positions to fill the gaps. c. An effective o-line is a basic necessity to establish the offense, whether it be the running game or the passing game.

3) Turnovers: a. 1 interception is reasonably expected. b. 2 fumbles are unacceptable.

4) Kicking: a. Going 1 of 3 in field goal attempts is embarrassing. b. Make 1 of 2 that were missed and the game goes to overtime. c. Make both of the missed field goals and KU wins.

5) Penalties: a. Some penalties are expected because it is the first game of the season and so few players had seen play previously courtesy of injuries and replacing key components of the team. b. 8 penalties are way too many errors.

6) Running: a. You can't establish a running game when your o-line doesn't make space. b. The passing game can open up the running game, but not when passes are dropped/fumbled and when the o-line doesn't give enough time to the QB.

7) Coaching: a. I wasn't able to watch the game, so I can't comment on the coaching too well. b. However, if we don't commit the two fumbles then we have more time in the red-zone. If we don't miss 2 of 3 field goal attempts, then we go to overtime or win the game.

Overall: I know that most people are calling this an example of things to come and are ruling out any success this year. However, they can't play much worse than this game, and they now have a lot of tape to work with.

I may as well be the optimist: 17-10 KU victory next week.

ConnecticutJayhawk 11 years, 4 months ago

The ONE positive for me last night was the play and leadership from Justin Springer. He has long been my families favorite Jayhawk and last night he showed he is ready to lead the defense. Mangino never gave him a chance with much but special teams and I was glad to see he has a real role on defense.

No matter what this season brings, Justin should keep his head up knowing that he has a real shot to be playing on Sundays in the future.

Ben Kliewer 11 years, 4 months ago

As a Jayhawk Fan, this is just embarrassing. I am appalled and offended at what happened yesterday. I am of course talking about the reactions of those who post on this board who claim to be Kansas supporters. I am about to burn all my Jayhawk T-Shirts so I'm not associated with some of you people. The quick turn around that you've shown on Coach Gill and his staff after one game represents a lack of class and a fickleness that could only be described as "A K-State Fan" (Ala, "We hate Prince, why don't we go get Snyder back) or "An Idiot from Mizzou." Seriously guys, you think after introducing an entirely new coaching staff, new QB to replace a Heisman darkhorse, new running back who wasn't a running back last year, new defense, new everything, we're going to be competing in the BCS? The Big 12? The North? Yeah, we're probably going to lose a lot of game this year. So what? We'll probably lose to everyone except maybe Iowa State. This was the first game with an entirely new program, literally! News flash, as others on here have said, we actually haven't been as good as we think we have been. We have no room to complain like this. Mangino was a step in the process, and this loss represents the growing pains of a program on it's way to success. I love how after one loss everyone can tell the future and predicts a winless season and a talentless coach. And who cares, are you going to want to fire every coach who doesn't win the Big 12 his first season? Remember, Lew hired Self because of his track record, and the reason he hired Gill is because of his track record. Why don't we fire Self for losing to Northern Iowa last year? Why didn't we fire Self after his loss to Bucknell his second year? I'm an a-hole KU fan, if I don't undeservedly win the National Championship every year in every sport I'm going to b*tch and complain about it. Geez people, we're not KSU fans, we're not UNC fans, we're not Duke fans. Show some class and some tact and wait to see what Gill can do before you damn him. 3 years from now when Kansas Football and Coach Gill are knocking on the BCS door you're all going to be talking about what a great hire Gill was. So just have some patience. We're not winning the BCS anytime soon, and with support from fans like you, we never will.

Ben Kliewer 11 years, 4 months ago

Based on history. Mangino's first year he was 2-10. Doesn't sound too far off from where we'll be this year. And if you take into account how Mangino and Reesing wrecked our program last year, and that we lost so many starters, you can't make it a case that we're in a better place than when Allen was ousted. Second year, we went to the Tangerine Bowl. Could be a low level bowl for Gill next year. Fourth year, the Fort Worth Bowl. Bet we could do better sooner with Gill. Sixth year, the Orange Bowl. By Gill's sixth year, we could easily be back here. Considering the position that Gill comes in on, with the reputation Mangino built for Kansas, and Gill's potential to be a superior coach to Mangino (yeah, I'll say it) I'd say in his fourth season as Head Coach, Turner Gill will be making some noise with regards to the BCS. What's this based on? How about facts of Gill and his coaching staff's track records. Do some research.

Ben Kliewer 11 years, 4 months ago

I forgot to mention Gill's first year at Buffalo he was 2-10, 2nd year 5-7, 3rd year 8-6. I honestly believe in a bigger conference with a bigger name school Gill's ability to recruit to his system and implement it at Kansas will be enhanced greatly, and I believe he will take our program to new heights. Put the pitchforks down. Yeah, we lost to NDSU, and we'll probably get smeared by GaTech, but let's take a look at this season for what it is, rebuilding and growing.

Mangino_Maniac 11 years, 4 months ago

Compete in the BCS, Big 12, the North? Maybe not... but score more than three points and beat NDSU? H*ll yeah, I think that should've happened!!!

And I still think we'll regret not hiring Tuberville.

khummel60 11 years, 4 months ago

Well said. We need to give Gill a chance. Was it painful to watch that game last night? Of course! I don't think I've ever seen a Kansas football team play that badly. But honestly, what's the point of all this "fire Gill talk", or "rehire Mangino" talk? That's simply not going to happen. And I really hope the athletes on our football team don't have the defeatist, quitter attitude represented on this blog. If so, you are all very correct - Kansas football is doomed. Gill may not be the savior we've waited for, but its WAY too early for any of you to make that determination. He's a class act, and he represents Kansas in the best light, and he has very impressive credentials and experience. I honestly believe we are very lucky to have to him, and I hope he doesn't allow the doubters to sway him from his long-term plan. And anyone who questions Gill's dedication, determination, or competitiveness is a fool, and never watched him play football. Is he a great coach? Only time will tell. Give him some time.

midhawktx 11 years, 4 months ago

Are you kidding me? We don't have time to give Gill a chance. This is all about conference re-aligngment that WILL take place in four years. And if you didn't notice, we weren't a wanted program even with Basetball and many bowl game wins for football. I was there for the Terry Allen era and it set us back many years and cost KU millions of dollars. I'll give you that Gill is a nice guy. He's a nice guy that can't put a sentence together (i watched TV last night and almost stroked out over his poor language skills). As for being too early to tell, we got beat by a D1AA school. This Saturday, we are going to get creamed. If I'm wrong, I'll admit it. But don't tell us that we have time at KU to wait. Time is of the essence.

Ben Kliewer 11 years, 4 months ago

First, I don't know any coach in the COUNTRY that could come in and turn our program into something "appealing" to conferences in realignment in four years. Second, there's no such thing as D1AA in football, it's FCS. Bottom line... Regardless of who the coach is, we could hire Mac Brown and Nick Saban to double team head coach and Kansas Football would still not be attractive to realignment conferences. We just don't have the name.

midhawktx 11 years, 4 months ago

You're kidding me right? Do you really believe that a coach could not bring a program that is two years removed from a bowl win to one of the future major conferences? Lets use your scenario with Brown and Saban (since you used them). You don't think they could recruit well. I think they might make SportsCenter everyday. But that won't happen, so my easy suggestion is to get rid of Terry Gill (or Turner Allen) and hire Mike Leach. He made something out of nothing in Lubbock.
As for the name issue...we made national news for getting beat by a FCS or D1AA opponent, so I'd like to think that we have something going for us.
Bottom line is we could join one of the maors in four years; just made the wrong hire a few months ago.

Ben Kliewer 11 years, 4 months ago

Calling us a program two years removed from a bowl ( I assume you're meaning BCS bowl as the significance of that) is pretty generous. Our Orange Bowl win was the result of a series of lucky breaks. Like I said earlier, our program hasn't been as good as we all seem to think it has been. I think Brown and Saban could recruit well, but apparently the timeless art of sarcastic exaggeration is lost on you. I said that to make a point. Regardless of who we hired, Kansas would not be a big name program in 4 years, especially if we just up and fired our current coach and hired a new one next year. We'd get a name alright, as a school full of fools who can't build programs, and little babies who want our candy now. I'll stand behind the hire of Gill until he actually does something to prove otherwise, not jump on the b*tchfit bandwagon and have a freakin' conniption after one game. Also, if Kansas hired Mike Leach, I would punch a baby.

midhawktx 11 years, 4 months ago

Insight Bowl 2008 my math, that is two years removed. 2007 season was the BCS bowl win but was played in 2008. Hope that clears it up for you.

I tell you stick with Gill and see how that ends for you. I've disagreed with this hire from day one, and the firing of Mangino. Turner Allen is not the right fit for KU.

How can you disagree with Leach? He brought an unbelievable amount of success to the TTU program. The only reason he was fired b/c Tech didn't want to honor the contract. If he coached at KU, he would have won multiple north questions. He and his football philosphy at a tough recruiting school like KU would pay off instantly, unless Gill totally runs us in the ground.

I don't get your rationale though. You say that no coach can bring success to KU, so you want to stay with Gill? It doesn't make sense. Hey pal, I've been through the coachinbg changes over the years. I supported Allen, Mangino, Williams and Self. Gill is and will not be the answer for us. If you think no one coach can get us to a major conference, don't you go with a coach who can keep your program consistently successful?

Ben Kliewer 11 years, 4 months ago

Here's my point; Who cares about the Insight Bowl? BCS is where it's at (but I hate BCS). Thing is, we're going to have to deal with Gill as a coach for at least a couple more years, so why make ourselves miserable by throwing a fit about him all year? Instead, lets focus on some positives and see what happens. It seems like a lot of people get their jollies by being upset all the time, I don't get it. It's one game into the season, let's see how this pans out, shall we? I'm sorry you disagreed with the firing of Mangino, I liked the fighting Manginos too, but it happened. All of this complaining is like a rocking chair, it gives us something to do, but doesn't get us anywhere. I'm not disagreeing with the fact that Leach is a good coach, I've just never had a lot of respect for him as a human being. Him and his fat little girlfriend who tells him he's great. As far as Gill being the right fit for KU, I'd say we can't make that call yet. Let me explain my rationale, maybe I didn't explain it well enough. You're talking about a coach bringing success to KU and making us appealing to the Conference Realignment gods. I'm saying, if we hire coach Gill, or if we hire Tuberville, or if we hire Leach or if we hire Jesus Christ, or if we hire the Buddah...regardless, if we win 2 north titles, if we win the Big 12, Kansas will not be a big enough football name by that time to be "appealing" to Super Conferences. We'll still be hosed, regardless of how awesome we are by that point. We don't have the history over the last 10-20 years to warrant that kind of respect. KSU doesn't even have that kind of respect, and they were more of a national power than we've ever the last 20 years. What I am also saying is this. Don't write off Gill right now. I respectfully disagree with your comparison to Terry Allen. You don't think I've been around since the Allen era? Believe me, my family and I have seen 'Hawk football at it's worst. What I am saying is that we might as well give Gill a chance to prove himself beyond one game before we start calling for his blood. We're going to have to anyway. I honestly believe he has a program and plan in mind that he can and will implement and execute. Maybe even be successful in the North...maybe. None of us knows for sure. I think Gill was handed the keys to a Chevy that needs an engine rebuild and I feel like the fans are complaining because he hasn't rebuilt it before he's had time to order the parts. I'm saying I believe Gill is a guy who can make our program consistently successful, I really do, but that takes a year or two to develop. That's football. That's just the way it works. At least in our situation. So, to clarify; No, I am not saying "no coach can bring success to KU football," I'm saying no coach could give Kansas the "Florida" style reputation many people seem to be looking for, in the time frame they are looking for it.

ibleedku 11 years, 4 months ago

First off....winning the Big 12 or a BCS game?? Seriously? I don't think any blogger on here has delusions of grandeur...I think we all knew we had our issues with past teams...and I believe we all knew we would have issues with this one. The difference being though, we usually beat teams WE ARE SUPPOSED TO BEAT!! I think everyone on here feels passionate about the football program, hence the criticisms. We all want to succeed and see the football program gain national respect and notoriety. But most of us PAY damn good money for season tickets and some of us pay damn good money to the Williams we can yell at the top of our lungs about things we're unhappy with. Namely...losing to NDSU!! That was pathetic.

Kit Duncan 11 years, 4 months ago

Hear! Hear!

These are many of the same folks who wanted Self fired after the Bucknell game. If they had gotten their way, KU would still be rebuilding its basketball program under a new coach and all without a National Championship to show for it.

I only hope the players stay away from this board and let the coaches do the critiquing. It was an ugly game, but I didn't see the players quitting. People here should at least keep their criticisms civil and encouraging of the players and coaching staff to do better.

Will KU win next week? Probably not. I hope they make a better showing, though.

kufanman88 11 years, 4 months ago

Not even close to the same thing as Self. Self was at least a proven head coach at the major program level. Anyone with a brain can see that Gill doesnt have a chance to live up to the hype. He has proven he cant recruit at the level of Mangino and is at the bottom of the league. This is for a guy who was touted as a major recruiter-especially in Texas. Too bad Lew didnt accept an interview with Tubberville like he wanted. Now he is winning in Lubbock and laughing off KUs rejection of his offer.

DevilHawk 11 years, 4 months ago

You are comparing Mangino's recruiting after the Orange Bowl appearance to Gill's recruiting before he even coached one game at KU.

This was a bad way to start the season, but Gill seems to be a coach who focuses on reviewing tape. I'm willing to bet that the team spends a lot of time seeing everything they did wrong and then fixing it over the course of the week.

Ben Kliewer 11 years, 4 months ago

Tubberville has built an unprecedented 1-0 record at TTech! My brain just fell out of my skull!

ZDKC 11 years, 4 months ago

There's a reason you're in the minority here. Apparently you don't know much about D1 BSC football.

Turner Gill is getting paid 2M for results -- not to sing kumbaya around the campfire. Nick Saban isn't baking brownies for his kids over there in Tuscaloosa. If we wanted this, we'd simply just send the players to Sunday school every week. Results = WINS and no losses against teams who go 2-10 in the 1AA. Also one other thing... your shtbag $2.97 alumni donation generally means you don't get to have an opinion on the matter. You may exit stage left.

Beak 11 years, 4 months ago

hate to say it, but the uniforms looked bush league too.

Mangino_Maniac 11 years, 4 months ago

Those white shoes should go... I thought we had a tough, workman type look with the gray pants and black cleats. Those white pants & shoes made us look like didn't want to get dirty.

ibleedku 11 years, 4 months ago

I completely agree. The first comment I made when they ran out of the tunnel was how I didn't care for the white pants. Grey or blue pants with either team color shoes or black...and blue knee-high socks. THEY SHOULD DEFINITELY PUT THE BIRD BACK ON THE HELMET. That looked so awesome last year during the MU game. And please put the names back on the jerseys....

midhawktx 11 years, 4 months ago

I think everyone who is bashing the jerseys is right on. You have a new program with new players and I don't have a clue who is on the field. Is Gill really this dumb to think that by not having names on the jerseys makes us better? We got beat by D1AA...time to change that idea, especially since we are on TV this year.

Screw it, fire Turner Allen!!!

CatsEatBirds 11 years, 4 months ago

I think changing the jerseys will make all the difference. Then you should be able to compete with the rest of the Big 12 North.

Earlier post stating you expect to beat ISU shows complete lack of comprehension. Many analysts picked KU to finish ahead of CU, ISU, and even KSU. Those teams look like Nebraska compared to what KU put on the field. Don't expect to compete against GT next week, concentrate on being better than a high school team first.

Can't wait to see the KSU faithful take over Memorial Stadium on Thursday night. Sea of purple and silver. Don't even bother traveling to KC to watch the massacre at the hands of the Tigers.

Andrew Moore 11 years, 4 months ago

Didn't KSU fall to Louisiana-Lafayette last year? They were so much better halfway into the season. The point is that a lot can change between now and the sunflower showdown

I was impressed by ISU and KSU this weekend and appalled by my jayhawks, but its only one game and the first game of a new regime at that...

I'm not worried about the long-term health of the football program. Turner Gill will right the ship.

ibleedku 11 years, 4 months ago

CatsEatBirds....wasn't too long ago the KSUck faithful had to deal with Ron Prince...and I believe KU owned you during that period. You cow tippers couldn't wait to dig up your beloved Bill Snyder from the grave to save your garbage program. You're only going into your 2nd season removed from shut it....not much for you to brag about right now.

OPJayhawk 11 years, 4 months ago

One of the most disgusting things I've ever witnessed in my life.
Offense: F Defense: F Special teams: F in every aspect Coaching: F Effort: F Preparedness/Organization: F Clock Management: F Desire: F Playing smart: F Half-time/in game adjustment: F, players and coaches. White shoes: a gigantic F Inflatable tunnel with smoke/steam: F

Mangino_Maniac 11 years, 4 months ago

The removal of names on the jerseys is silly... Gill has this ideal of how he is going to 'mold young men'... I think it's all a little pretentious. I hope Gill and his staff prove me wrong, but from day one I haven't felt he has a grasp on coaching at this level.

Dang, we could've had Tuberville!?!?

kufanman88 11 years, 4 months ago

Please review my comments from the onset of Gill's hiring. Don't say I didn't tell you so. Meanwhile, Tommy Tubberville (a man you wanted. Scratch that. Put feelers/interviews out to the media that he wanted to come to Kansas) is winning in Lubbock. Way to go Lew!ser....

Gill never. I repeat. Never proved himself worthy of a BCS head coaching job. His recruiting so far has been ranked two rungs below that of Mangino. Yet he said he was going to recruit. recruit. recruit. Well he cant recruit, he cant coach, and his teams can not play offense!

midhawktx 11 years, 4 months ago

Couldn't agree more...this was an absolute terrible hire. Might I add that Terry Gill (or Turner Allen) couldn't even perform during the pre game interview. I mean, you are a D1 coach but can't but two sentences together. How did this man impress Perkins? Should we let Al Bohl back to make the coaching hires?

thejayhawkfan 11 years, 4 months ago

I hear this from both sides, fire Gill, give him is what I think, if we don't hold KU football to a higher standard than this, KU will = Royals. If we accept loses like this then we might as well not have a football team. We should hold all our sports to a high standard. Damn just look at LSU, a few years removed from their National Title their coach is in the Hot Seat for not making it to a legit bowl in the past few years. Seems to me like their are a few jayhawk fans who would accept a few years of 2 or 3 win seasons and if that don't work out get a new coach (like the Royals). I want a winner NOW not in 3 years or 4 years. I miss the big guy already, but remember GILL LOST WITH MANGINO's 3-4 Star Athletes...if you look at the 2011 class I only see 0-3 Star Athletes. I'll still cheer and support but I want to win also. A winning team will fill up the stadium, a losing team will be like...the Royals averaging 10,000 a game. Rock Chalk

DevilHawk 11 years, 4 months ago

The Royals simply refuse to pay to keep players...they are nothing more than an MLB farm-team.

We should be mad at the team for laying an egg. However, this was a learning experience for every player on the team as well as for every coach of the team.

If they don't show some major improvement when we play New Mexico State in Week 4, then there are probably coaching issues. But even then, if we accumulate more injuries while playing Georgia Tech and Southern Miss, then it's not fair to whine about it. (In case you forget: we lack depth at a large number of positions.) We have the talent to do well, but we need the team to play as a team and not do stupid things such as accumulating penalties, missing field goals, committing turnovers, and dropping the ball.

Ben Kliewer 11 years, 4 months ago

Three things: 1. I really love the concept of cool football uniforms, I think they are a badass part of football, and cool looking unis are the shiznit. However, at this point in the argument they could be wearing brown uniforms for all I care, I just want to see them improve. 2. I could not agree more with TheJayhawkFan. I am saying "Give Gill a Chance/Time," however, I will also not be content with multiple 2 or 3 win seasons. I'm saying there is room for improvement and I have good faith that improvement will take place. 3. kufanman88, you seem to be a very angry and irrational person. By irrational, I of course mean to quote you as saying "Tubberville is winning in Lubbock." By "winning" I assume you mean one win, which was barely pulling out a victory against SMU. By angry, I mean that you seem to very much enjoy being furious over this whole situation, as you post on this board with a very sour good humanity I would recommend you seek therapy. And probably don't watch the rest of the season...

A few from upset Jayhawks, that's obvious.

But 300 from new named posters we've never heard from before?

Gee I wonder if we have a bunch of trolls on board?

Glad to know they're following our football team.

Patience, boys....

We have a lot of national championship rings on this staff.

That doesn't change that we looked awful Saturday.

But keep the faith brothers.

We will be good.

In a year or two we will be loaded.

Patience boys....

Amen and Amen

I'd like to direct your attention to this instructional video on the dangers of trolling.

Maracas 11 years, 4 months ago

I'm no troll. I find it simply inexcusable we played like a pee wee league team and lost to a lower echelon D-1A school. In what other area is the consumer to be expected to be happy with a defective product?

Wildhawk2198 11 years, 4 months ago

Coach Gill is going to do just fine. We can all agree that we looked bad yesterday. However, we did lead in all areas of the game. We just didn't get it across the goal line. It happens.

For all of you who are ready to send Coach Gill up the river, spend a day in his shoes or put your money where your mouth is. Stop talking about how this man can't do the job and get him the tools he needs to do his job. Become season ticket holders, join the boosters, support the staff we have.

We lost ONE game!!! Cry me a river! You people are probably the same ones that think the government owes you a living just because you were born on American soil.

Rock, Chalk, Jayhawk.... FOR LIFE!!! Put your heads down, get your hands dirt, and do the hard work...

JayhawkBigXII 11 years, 4 months ago

We'll see how it plays out. But two things are important when hiring a high level coach.

(1) Proven Credientials. What does his past record show to merit his hiring?

(2) What can you expect from those credentials?

Kansas Football is in the "great unknown" because Gill does not have stellar credentials. In contrast, Mangino had extremely good credentials with his past experience at KSU and OU, and was partly responsible for their great success.

If Gill somehow has success at Kansas, it will be to the suprise of everyone... given his past credentials.

I'm dissappointed... but still a Jayhawk down to the DNA.

Although we are in for a very long football season... ROCK CHALK
