Kansas University offensive coordinator Ed Warinner, who on Monday interviewed for the University of Akron head coaching vacancy, did not get the job, a school official confirmed Wednesday.
Akron, which last month fired coach J.D. Brookhart and his staff following a 3-9 season, is expected to announce Notre Dame assistant head coach Rob Ianello as the program’s new coach during a Thursday news conference.
Warinner began his career at Akron in 1984, when he served one season as the running backs coach before moving to Michigan State. He served two seasons there before moving on to Army, Air Force and Illinois.
Akron would have represented Warinner’s first head-coaching job.
In the past three seasons under Warinner, who was recently named a finalist for the American Football Coaches Association’s National Assistant Coach of the Year award, the Kansas offense thrived, finishing the 2009 season ranked seventh in the NCAA in passing offense (310.3 yards per game) and 25th in total offense (422.42).
The Jayhawks also produced their top three passing and top three total offense seasons in school history under his watch.

Is it Akron or Acorn? I heard he didn't get the head job at Acorn, that he lost out to Hugh Hefner; but that he is still in the running for the Akron head football job. Please clear up the confusion, LJW.

If Warinner is not being considered for the head coach at KU, I hope the new coach would consider him as offensive Coord again, and KU gives him a good salary. If he leaves, our new coach should get former KU player Nolan Cromwell to run the offense. Look what he did in the Texas - Texas A&M game. It would also put in position to become head coach at KU if he worked out. Turner Gill is not our Head coach prospect I hope, his record is not too great.......we need a name with a proven track record. I think if Warinner has a chance to be a head coach at good college, he will go. He has a proven ability to do the offense and can hire a defense coach to take care of that side of the fence. Good luck Ed, you deserve a good position wherever you find it, I just hope it's still at KU.

55 Jayhawk,
I agree and disagree. I think teams in the Big 12 are starting to figure out the spread and how to defend it. I still think you need to run the ball effectively or have a very mobile qb.
