Three freshmen can play

— In the end, Kansas University’s basketball team showed its youth, falling from ahead to lose to Syracuse, 89-81 in overtime, Tuesday night at the Sprint Center in the CBE Classic final.

But, man, can three of those freshmen play in spurts.

Tyshawn Taylor, Marcus Morris and Markieff Morris don’t have games as buttoned-up as they will be when they gain more experience. They aren’t above committing silly fouls, rushing shots, spacing out when digging down is in order and getting caught out of position now and then.

Yet, what came through more clearly than anything about the talented trio is that when they get it together, Kansas could get real good again sooner than most expect.

For a long stretch late in the second half, Kansas had the three freshmen, a sophomore who played 144 minutes (Tyrel Reed) all last season and Sherron Collins on the floor, and they held their own.

Taylor, a blur who will score many of his points finishing fast breaks, showed remarkable speed, quickness and confidence in a first-half stretch that took only 1:40 off the clock, time enough for him to outscore Syracuse, 9-0. His spin move to finish a drive to the hoop drew a huge ovation from the pro-KU crowd. Taylor finished with 17 points.

On consecutive possessions late in the second half, Marcus Morris swatted a shot from Jonny Flynn and fired the ball upcourt to trigger a break that resulted in a bucket by Taylor. On the next possession, Morris stepped into a passing lane for a steal and fired the ball upcourt.

On a night Collins, the team’s best, most experienced player, encountered trouble protecting the ball against the shorter Flynn and seemed at times to get caught up in the competition against him, Taylor and Morris showed how much potential they have.

“Wow, Taylor’s a good player,” veteran Syracuse coach Jim Boeheim said. “He’s a really good player.”

Meanwhile, Marcus Morris did a little bit of everything in 36 minutes, chipping in 11 points, 11 rebounds (six on the offensive glass), six assists, two blocked shots and a steal. His twin, Markieff, played 13 minutes and totaled five points and four rebounds.

All three players looked as if they embraced the big stage, thrived on the competition.

“Yeah,” KU coach Bill Self said when asked if he liked the way the three freshmen competed. “Competing is also poise. Competing is also getting a stop when you know you really have to get a stop. I’d say there were times when we did that pretty well. I’d say there were times when we didn’t do that very well. Competing is also focus and concentration. And we made some plays that weren’t great plays, obviously, but even with all the things we didn’t do well, we’ve still got the game, we’re still up six with a couple minutes left.”

Four games into the season, Taylor and Marcus Morris already have shown enough to make it apparent they will join Aldrich and Collins in the starting lineup for the duration. The two freshmen will get better, particularly defensively, and when they do, so will Kansas.

“We’ve got to get a little tougher and harder, but we did compete,” Self said.

DrRoach (anonymous) says...The problem with most of you people (KU people) is your completely uninformed? Seemingly low basketball IQ? Bi-polar? Ignorant? We didn't lose due to being out coached. We didn't because the Orangmen are a better team (there not), and not due to most other reasons i have read on here. We mainly due to playing 3 freshmen this early in the season. With all there greatness, (they will be awesome come tourney time; with a capitol A baby), come untimely freshmen mistakes, poor second half foul shooting, pissing down there leg when 'Cuse made there run etc. Still, this game we could of overcame that. Mr. Collins, your a different story and you need to keep your head on the team instead of personal showdowns; which you lost tonite. Your lack of mental toughness cost us as Im sure by now you have gotten an in your face ass-chewing.That said, everyone's allowed mistakes, Sherron will right his ship, the freshmen will continue to improve, and the Jayhawks will be a monster in March. I look forward to one hell-of an exciting season.

Releford can play too, I don't know why he isnt getting more minutes. When he is in good things seem to happen and the kid has a nose for the ball. I know it is early but I really hope he gets more opportunity in games than what I saw in this tourney.

We do have some talented freshman. Taylor reminds me so much of Chalmers when he first joined KU. Chalmers would do the same thing.....drive to the basket out of control and charge. Chalmers also learned by the end of the year to play more in control. Taylor will do the same. This kid has a very bright future. He is by far the most confident out of all the freshman. The Morris twins are improving by the game. Did anyone else cringe when Markieff took that three at the top of the key that he made? It was one of those where you say "what the hell are you doing.....nice shot!!" If one of them is not having a good night rebounding, the other one steps it up. They are a great combination to have. Lastly, if Releford isn't playing now, he's not going to play for the year. Remember that Mario Little hasn't even stepped on the court yet. It aggrevates me to some extent that Morningstar and Reed are playing over him. Neither Reed or Morningstar are shooting well from the perimeter (though they did hit some near the end of the game last night) and that's killing the team. As I've posted in other articles before, does anyone know why Releford sits on the bench? What's his role on this team?

I wasn't mad at us losing in OT lastnight at all. However I was a little disappointed in how we ended the game given we were up in the second half, but as Kansas fans we have seen this before in 05. This team is leaps and bounds ahead of where that team was at this point. Stop accusing and posting that crap. I agree w/ leonard, your posts are now simply skip-over material.

To whomever said "Morningstar is playing defense".......He can't hang against a D1 three guard/small forward. He got absolutely manhandled by #11 last night when we played man defense. It's not really fair to him that we're playing him on the baseline in a 2-3 zone right now, but that's what we've got right now. You better HOPE Mario Little can be healthy and contribute right by mid-January.The one thing Morningstar brings to the table right now is the "Moody Effect": he stabilizes the team on the offensive end somewhat. No, he can't score against better athleticism, but he is in the right spots and gets other guys in the right spots so the offense runs.

Hey Roach, that's the treatment you get when you call people out and pretend to know more than anyone else. Now what about Appleton? Is anyone else a little disappointed in this guy? He was a top five juco player and he's not good enough to get minutes? And like many others, I was asking why isn't Releford playing. I would think he's got more talent than Morningstar or Reed, and especially Teahan. He needs to do what he needs to do to get some playing time because he's too talented to sit the bench all year. Remember he lit it up one of their preseason games in Canada.

I can understand if Self doesnt want to play Releford because of lack of defense or hustle or whatever but why bring the kid in at the end of the game, cold off the bench with seconds remaining in his hometown. What was the point? He needs to get in some games and cant be any worse than Morningstar at least in short stretches. Not trying to disrespect Morningstar but he should really be playing for a Div II or Mid-Major program rather than KU. By the way did anyone really expect Teahan to come in cold and hit a crucial three especially when he has struggled so far this season? Airrrrball!

Referring to others as "ignorant" and then not using proper English grammar? Hilarious. Oh, and I'm sure there are a lot of websites about spelling that we all could post on, but I'm pretty sure that mistaking "there" for "they're" (which is the contraction of "they are") is not a spelling issue, but one of English grammar. For, you see, you did properly spell "there."Nevertheless, I think that Dr. Roach is trying to convey that the sky is NOT falling, and that with a young team, we are going to experience some bumps along the road. I agree with him on that. I also agree with him that Sherron lost control of his emotions last night, which he cannot do. However, Dr. Roach, you cannot be surprised that when you refer to a group of people as ignorant when you fail to use proper English grammar, you are going to get some flack over it.The old adage, "if you can dish it out, you better be able to take it" comes to mind....

2 critical turn over were turned into easy buckets on the other end, that's how they got closed in the last few minutes. We also played like we had a large lead to protect (which we didn't) - bad strategy. On more than a couple of occasions, we waited until the last 10 seconds for Collins to penetrate a well played 2-3 zone defense. Obviously we could see that he forced things that were not there. Need to provide him with more set plays on failed penetration, it seemed that he didn't have plan B should the defense collapse on him.Our supposedly sharp shooters were not shooting well (3 - 12), they ended up playing scrapy defense. Sharp shooters should make their shots or they shouldn't be wasting the minutes.I agree that Releford obviously have more talent than the minutes he receives so far, but not sure if Self knows how to use or blend his talent yet.

I'd like to see Coach Self take a game, and use Appleton and Releford in the same roles he's currently using Reed and Morningstar, and see how well the team does. I think it's an experiment worth trying this early in the season, and Coppin St. would be a perfect game to try it in. I think the results would be positive.

Everyone beat me to the punch regarding DrRoach and the spelling gaffes--terribly distracting. The youth issue reared it's head in the final 10 minutes of the game. The poor free throw shooting and lack of poise doomed them. I figured they'd lose if they let it get to OT but I will say that I'm pleasantly surprised by the team's performance thus far. You can see the improvement with each game which is very encouraging.

It is amazing that so many posts continue to rip Brady. Go check the stats. He is leading the team in assists and not turning the ball over. That is exactly what Coach Self has said he wants on this team. Coach has said that he wants players that understand that the offense runs thru Cole and Sherron. It is unfortunate that Brady has to defend the 3, but even there he was praised by Coach Knight during the UW game as the first person to have stuck his behind into the opposition and boxed out on a rebound. I believe it was also Coach Knight who commented that he doesn't like the PG, SG terminology of today's game. I believe he said something along the lines of "give me 3 guys that can handle and distribute the BB." That sounds a lot like KU w/ Brady.Releford may make things happen when he comes into games, but unfortunately he has learned that Coach isn't looking for that in the 3 role players that start.

We have a lot of growing up to do but I really like the development of Taylor over the first four games. He looked pretty shaky in his first game but his improvement by game four has been impressive.Regarding Little and Appleton, it is amazing that so many people who consider themselves big KU fans, don't seem to know about Little and Appleton's injurys. Little can't walk yet without a limp and Appleton is just coming back from an injury that caused him to miss almost all the early season practices. I keep seeing comments like "what's the deal with Little?" or "How come Self doesn't play Appleton more?". Come on folks pay attention. KU fans are the most knowledgable fans in the country--keep up.Once they are ready Self will give them a chance to work themselves into the rotation and we will see what they can do.

Timmay97,Releford sits, because he lacks a trey and Self is trying to build a perimeter game that frees the big men up to score. To free them up, i.e., to keep defenders from sagging on Cole and the Twins, you've got to keep credible threats on the perimeter AND you've got to keep the lane uncluttered. Releford's game is slashing. He doesn't fit in the scheme right now.My hunch is that when/if Little comes back, we WILL see a stretch where Little and Releford split the bulk of the minutes at the three spot. I'm guessing Self wants to wait till he has Little AND Releford to explore the wing slasher strategy for a couple games. Reed and Brady can't slash, so why explore it without two guys who can give a full 40 minutes to it? Self has to get Taylor his minutes ASAP to see if he can shoot a lick from the trey. Self needs to get Reed and Brady comfortable with the action, so they can come in as designated bombers the rest of the season, if he decides to opt for starting with a wing slasher game. It all makes sense to me. Its possible that Releford is hurt, or that he's just not tough enough for the action. He kind of acts like a really big kid on the bench. But I really think he is just being a good team guy, letting Self bring Brady and Reed along, and then he will come forward for a while and get a chance to show his stuff, too.Self's M.O. has been to seek to be able to play the game as many ways as possible, so that he can play take-what-they-give-us all the time, and then look for matchup advantages in what ever mode they give us.Its how Self thinks. After only four or so games, the team's clearly got this kind of offense--the kind where KU's shooters stretch the floor for the bigs--wired.Who knows, he might not even wait for Little. He may play Releford a bunch this next game. Its a weak opponent. Historically, it seems that he breaks the non conference season up into a series of playing style experiments--each one climaxing in a tough opponent.Bill likes to be able to play through the bigs for awhile. He likes to play through the guards awhile. Then through the three and four for awhile. Then when conference season starts, the team is ready to play take what they give us, and he can focus on toughening particular players up mentally, while the guys play the three or four basic modes they have learned during nonconference.

I guess I am the only one who feels like Mario Brothers are a Bust so far! They are too passive in my opinion. They get the rebounds only because they are tall with great wingspan. If you put Kleinman in there, I am sure Keinman could show some talent too (Not suggesting Kleinman is better whatsoever) I hope Coach self tells them to become aggressive like he did to Brandon Rush previous years. I am sure they are nice guys but, come-on they have to show some authority as being two of the bigs in our team. Cole Aldridge is the man. Learn some pointers from him.Morningstar, Reed and now Teahan.... what the FXXX? over Releford??? There's gotta be special reason why Coach is not putting Releford in the game over any of those guys... All these three guys need to sit on bench and pop out once in a while that's it... This is a new team but we fans don't have to suffer watching these guys turnover the ball and not make any shots.

Ya'll are right on for the most part. Morningstar - he is playing because he is a glue guy and is creating competition and frustration for younger guys. Coach Self is using him to play some mind games and create a toughness with this group.Reed - he is going to play! He is not Kirk H, but he has those characteristics in his game. He is better suited to defend at this level than Morningstar and because history shows he is a great perimeter shooter/pt. guard with some bounce. At times last night he brought the ball up and you will see him do this more on occasion. Releford - Watched him play on the summer circuit the last few summers and he just needs more mental toughness and polish to his offensive game. Morningstar is just bridging the gap till Releford is ready. Little - Is losing valuable time and it will be difficult for him to catch up. If he is going to get some minutes it will probably be with the twins and Cole. As the year goes on look for him to get time at the wing as he becomes more comfortable in the system. CS will not sacrifice wins to work Little into the rotation. You can not rush a new player into the system. Don't be suprised to see some unhappy guys at the end of the year and this will lead to a transfer or two opening up a late scholarship. Coached at college level for 24 years and I am very impressed with the level CS has the guys playing at. Every fan should be excited, but ready to see some meltdowns like last night. Youth is great, but there will be some ups and downs.

hope people are still reading these posts, but i would guess relaford is not playing due to offensive reasons. every scouting report says he can defend, but you have to assume that in brady's three years and reed's second they understand what bill is looking for offensively. reed and morningstar (and as much as i hate it teahan) have put in way more minutes than relaford. one has to figure that bill is playing who is performing the role he expects them to. for example, quintrell thomas has started three games simply because his first game was his strongest one, but since his minutes have dropped. since the marcus morris has began playing well he has been starting. until relaford understands what the coaches are looking for his minutes will be limited.
