Travis Releford bought a 2008 Kansas University national champions T-shirt late last week at Kansas City International Airport before boarding a flight to Louisville, site of Saturday night's Derby Classic All-Star basketball game.
"I thought I'd wear it during warmups," Releford, a proud incoming KU freshman out of Roeland Park Miege, said Sunday after returning from Kentucky, where he scored 21 points, grabbed eight rebounds and earned MVP honors after leading the Black team to a 128-121 victory over the Gold.
"(Then) I heard we were going to get introduced and run out of the tunnel so I came up with a different idea."
That idea was to hold up the shirt to the 10,193 Freedom Hall fans during pregame introductions.
"If there were boos, there were not too many. They were clapping. They couldn't say anything," Releford joked of the fans, who had to be impressed with his 10-of-16 shooting (zero of two from three-point range) during the game.
Releford had a better offensive game than North Carolina signees Tyler Zeller (15 points) and Larry Drew (six); Louisville's Terrence Jennings (10) and Jered Swopshire (seven); as well as Kentucky's Darius Miles (six) and DeAndre Liggins (two). Cincinnati's Yancy Gates had 19 points, Nevada's Luke Babbitt 14 and Arizona's Jeff Withey 10.
"It's cool," Releford said of being named MVP despite coming off the bench. "I was getting open looks to the basket and taking advantage. My teammates encouraged me to keep it up, saying I could get MVP and things like that."
Releford admits he was hurt to be omitted from the McDonald's All-America game roster.
"It was another thing that gave me the momentum to do what I did," said Releford, snubbed despite averaging 24.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.0 assists for 19-3 Miege. Also, at the recent Albert Schweitzer Games, he averaged 17.8 points and 6.5 boards for the fourth-place United States Under 18 team. He had 30 points against Spain.
"I really feel I should have been," he added of being a McDonald's selection. "I have been having good summers and usually play well against the best competition."
Releford has recovered from a deep thigh bruise he suffered in Germany.
"I got kneed in the thigh, and the swelling went to my knee," Releford. "I'm OK now."
Releford said that upon graduation he will be fully qualified academically to play at KU.
¢ KU signees shine: Incoming KU freshmen Marcus and Markieff Morris and Quintrell Thomas led the Suburban Stars over the New York Stars, 129-127, in the Jordan Brand Classic Regional all-star game Saturday at Madison Square Garden.
Markieff, a 6-10, 220-pounder out of APEX Academies in Pennsauken, N.J., scored 16 points, including a three-pointer with :34 left that gave the Suburbans a 127-126 lead. Markieff hit six of 11 shots, including three of five threes. He had six rebounds and two steals.
His 6-8, 230-pound brother Marcus scored 20 points off 8-of-15 shooting. Marcus hit two of four threes with eight rebounds and three assists.
Thomas, 6-8, 225 out of St. Partrick High in Elizabeth, N.J., scored eight points off 3-of-6 shooting with six rebounds.
¢ Majok scores 14: Ater Majok, a 6-9 power forward from Sudan, was a teammate of Releford's in Louisville. He scored 14 points off 6-of-10 shooting with five rebounds.
Majok has visited Maryland, Baylor and Kentucky and will visit Connecticut next weekend. He is pondering a final trip to Kansas or UCLA. Connecticut is believed to be the favorite.
"He was on my team. He's pretty good. He shoots it a lot, (but) he made his shots," Releford said, indicating he didn't talk about recruiting with Majok over the weekend.

I don't want to say Brandon rush won't be missed, but Releford brings more of an aggressive, offensive mindset to the wing position. That's what we've been begging for the last 3 years. Now hopefully he'll buy in to Self's defensive mentality.

I just bought a box of Cheez-its because you could send away for a team basketball. They had 16 teams to chose from. No KU!!!! Now, I love me some Cheez-its, and the Jayhawk weeble-wobble I got from Cheez-its is probably the main reason KU won the championship, but I'm considering boycotting Cheez-its until they learn the error of their ways. They have Mizzu and Arkansas for crying out loud. Real hoops powerhouses, those two. (UCLA was not an option either, but Cal was, so I'm thinking that the person in charge of this promotion was not a hoops junkie).

tdomineKU is one of the hardest licenses in the nation to aquire. You won't see nearly as much KU apparel or other items in the marketplace because they are very very tight with their Licensing agreements.I wish they would loosen up so when I visit family in Florida I can start seeing Jayhawks everywhere, like I see those ugly Gator shirts here.

The high scores of those games make me a little nervous. However, I have no doubts Bill will get those kids playing lock down defense soon. I'd rather have kids like these that have natural shooting/scoring ability coming in, Defense is easier to teach.

cincy,I am with you on the idea of a big man that could be a threat outside, I just hope he is not content living around the three point line. Our big men must also be a force inside and do the dirty work. And how nice is it to see the enthusiasm of Releford for his future school.I would not fret too much about getting left off the Micky-D roster Mr. Releford, revenge is best when served up cold. A Big XII MVP honor and a Final Four appearance at some point should prove the point.

If the season were to start tomorrow, our lineup would beG - Sherron CollinsG - Mario ChalmersG - Travis RelefordF - Markieff MorrisC - Cole AldrichBenchG - Tyrone AppletonG/F - Mario LittleG - Tyrel Reed/Brady MorningstarF - Marcus MorrisF - Quintrell ThomasWe may not be as good defensively early on just because it will take time for guys to learn the other guys defensive abilities and learn to trust the rest of the team to play good team defense. Ultimately though, I think this group will still compete for a Big XII title and maybe make another deep tournament run, depending on if their defense meshes down the stretch.

Excited about the freshmen we have coming in for next year. We do need to keep in mind that the 3-point line will be moved back to 20' 9" starting this season. I wish the NCAA had just made it an even 21 feet. They could still do that. I hope it never moves back to the high school length (19' 9"). I hope it opens up the middle of the floor a little more for big men to roam. The distance won't change how guards and small forwards shoot because many of them shoot from 21 feet anyway. My thought is that the extra foot will keep some of these big guys I've seen over the years (not KU) who have no business shooting 3-pointers some extra pause and they'll have to step in and take mid-range shots. Also, I had to smile when reading about the Albert Schweitzer Games. Since Kansas basketball history sometimes gets "lost" amongst some of the other traditions, a book addressing this could be titled, "The Quest for the Historical Jayhawk." Ha ha. I'm not funny.

jacque,Couldn't agree more with you about the 3 point line, long over due. After all, why should the college game be played from areas that not just high school kids shoot from but Jr. high as well, even the women drain threes from the top of the circle. This should start to separate the men from the boys.

Rush's total game is going to be hard to replace. He was a big part of our inside outside game. A guy who is 6/6 who can play defense, rebound, shoot the three, run the court and get to the basket, does not come along every day. Releford could become that. Henry, if we get him, could be all of that and more.

Having big men that can shoot the three should open up the lane for these aggressive guards. Releford seems to have the aggression that Rush was lacking, but lets hope that he comes with the dedication on the defensive end.

I was at the Jordan All Star game. Marcus looked incredible. His touch was really nice, and he didn't force it. Thomas was great at getting position under that basket. They all seem a bit on the light side, but a few months weightlifting will fix that.

Justanotherfan; You think your local Kansan boy Releford is going to start over Mario Little from Chi city? Little was nasty here in high school for Washington, but didn't qualify academically. He's a good sized wing that can rebound. We shall see. Morningstar, a very reliable source and friend from Free State HS tells me, is only on the team cause his dad made a generous endowment to KU. Sounds about right, he should see as much playing time as me...None. I want to see Reed, Releford and Appleton mix up at the point and 2.

The shot clock should be at 30 seconds. The NBA is at 24 and the NCAA is at 35. Waaay too much time that could be used for more exciting offensive possessions!

MILF,I'll be honest. I've seen Releford play and have been impressed. I've only heard of what Little can do, haven't seen him play yet. I was torn as to which one would start, since Chalmers and Collins will both start (assuming Chalmers stays), but went with Releford because I have seen him. That's not a knock on Little because from what I have heard, he can defend bigger guys, which is important since Brandon is gone and won't be there to take on the 6-6, 6-7 wings anymore. I have Little off the bench because I like having a versatile guy coming off the bench. He can come in for Releford, Chalmers, Collins or Morris if we need to go small. That's a pretty nice luxury that very few guys can give you.As another note, Releford started off in KCMO, so he has some nasty to him, too. Miege didn't take that out of him. If they had let him take over like they should have, they may have made it to state this year.Either way, I think Releford and Little will both see quite a bit of time rotating with Chalmers and Collins in the 1, 2, and 3 spots. I agree that Morningstar and Reed are probably competing for what's left of the minutes (not much). Up front, we are already deep, and if Shady comes back, (or we add one more guy), I'm not sure we have enough minutes. Four big guys is a good rotation. Five is tough, because I'm not sure we could play any three of them at the same time. I need to check up on the twins ball handling to see if they could legitimately move to the perimeter for a stretch.

Very smart move by Self and his staff to recruit two of the top 5 jucos for the perimeter in a class of 6 players. That will not only give us some immediate maturity but also it will break up the huge class slot and spread out the scholarships more evenly by year. You'll never get it so the scholarships are evenly apportioned, but it's nice to have a mix of newcomers and upperclassmen.I hope Little is as nasty as you say!

Next years' team makeup will be quite a bit different.Sr class: Chalmers (hopefully), KliennmanJr class: Collins, Little, Appleton, BechardSo class: Aldrich, Reed, Morningstar, Teahan, BufordFr class: Morris, Morris, Thomas, Releford, (Taylor?)Just imagine if in two years we have this for a starting 5Aldrich, Morris, Morris, Releford, Tyshon Taylorwith our coaches those guys could win a championship

Who was the #1 JUCO that Little played behind last year? That would give a bit of NCAA perspective on his game. I remember when we first started recruiting him, some people scoffed at his freshmen numbers unti they realized that his minutes were limited.Cole, Sherron, (Mario & Darrell) will all start, and initially play 20+ minutes while Coach Self gives the new guys a chance to prove themselves. They'll all (including Tyrel, and maybe Conner/Brady as practice dictates) get 10-20 minutes a game. By BigXII time, the group will be reduced, and by March we'll be back to the returning starters getting about 30 minutes, and 2-4 reserves that have proven themselves getting 10 - 20 minutes of breather time. it doesn't seem like a stretch for next year's team to lose 5-10 games during the season, but the potential definitely exists for another long run in both Tourney's. Hopefully, we are all patient enough with them to enduring their learning curve. After watching a bit of what the Jordan Classic offered as BB, I'm a lot more excited about what the coaches can do with players than what the all-star games show regarding the players. It looked like mostly bad playground ball with a few Wow's to me.

There's no denying that Morningstar is a "legacy recruit". He wouldn't have been on the radar for KU if his dad hadn't played at KU.Same deal with Chase Buford, sort of. If his dad weren't a former KU assistant and good buddy of Coach Self, he wouldn't be at KU.There's nothing wrong with those kids. They're high character kids that work their butts off in practice every day knowing they won't see much playing time. Every program has to have a few kids like that. You can't have 14 or 15 superstars because you'll never keep all of them happy.

Jamarcus Ellis was the guy Little played behind in JUCO. He was at Indiana this year and he played a lot this year. His scoring role would probably have been bigger if he wasn't playing with two of the top 5 players in the Big 10--White and Gordon. His status is up in the air at Indiana. The interim coach kicked him and another kid off the squad for missing a meeting and then not showing up to run.

As far as B Rush being missed. He'l definitely be missed. He was that kind of player that fully committed to whatever role he was given, whether it be score, assist or defense. He did a lot of things that weren't as noticeable, but he did them the entire game, the entire season. That does look like a good recruiting class, and with Chalmers(fingers crossed) providing senior leadership, and Collins and Aldrich as underclass leaders, what great influences!!
