KU cracks BCS standings after Baylor beatdown
One day after demolishing the Baylor Bears 58-10 at Memorial Stadium, the Kansas Jayhawk football team debuted in the 13th slot of the BCS standings.
KU Football
The humans have spoken all year long. Now, the computers are thinking that Kansas University's football team is pretty good, too.
The first Bowl Championship Series standings were released Sunday, with Kansas ranking a flashy 13th in the nation.
The BCS standings are a complex equation that factors in two major polls - the USA Today poll and the Harris Interactive poll - and six computer rankings that take into account a number of complicated factors such as schedule strength.
The human polls, which count for two-thirds of the equation, collectively ranked KU 15th.
The computers, the other third, have the Jayhawks tied for eighth.
But until one understands the complex mathematical components involved - and there are plenty - knowing that KU's average is 0.5170 in the first BCS standings probably doesn't make Jayhawk fans do a cartwheel.
But ranking 13th might. And ranking one spot ahead Southern California, two ahead of Florida and three ahead of rival Missouri definitely will.
KU coach Mark Mangino didn't hear about the BCS standings until a reporter asked him Sunday afternoon. Even after the fact, he didn't put down the phone to do a cartwheel of his own.
"As I've said before," Mangino responded, "I'm really focused on what the ranking would be at the end of the season."
Until then, everybody else will be keeping close track. Besides the lofty placement in the BCS formula, the Jayhawks are ranked 15th this week in the three major polls - the Associated Press, the USA Today and the Harris polls - following their 58-10 drubbing of Baylor on Saturday.
Of course, the human-picked polls don't mean a hill of beans compared to the big daddy. The BCS poll determines which two teams play in the BCS National Championship game Jan. 7 in New Orleans. It also has a hand in figuring out who plays in the four BCS bowls - Fiesta, Rose, Sugar and Orange - after conference champions take their spots.
But six regular-season games - including Saturday's showdown at Colorado -separate the Jayhawks from postseason dreams of any sort. So Mangino is keeping his head out of the clouds for now, even if it's an almighty computer passing out some significant midseason praise.
"I'm not thinking about what polls are better or have more clout," Mangino said. "We appreciate anybody that's recognizing the way we've played to this point. But there's not really a whole lot to jump up and down about."

the stupity of the bcs will never -NEVER- allow kansas ,so. fl. or kentucky to play for a natl. championship. its biased and only makes up rules so the big 4 or 5 schools get to be champ.
if ku went undefited a school such as usc would get there even with 2 losses. strenght of schedule
is their excuse. just ask boise st. what is it going to take to get a playoff system???? not a bcs conference? what a way to keep the championship to a small group. afterall 15 million for a bowl game is not to be given to appl. state is it?
how long are the college pres. going to continue?
they out number the dozen or so schools that refuse to allow a playoff system.
in bb conzaga could never be natl. champs could they??? stupity prevails!

I hold out hope that we'll be in the BCS top 15. We're fifteen in the coaches (haven't seen the new Harris yet) and and the computer rankings that I've seen have KU even higher. It's not a stretch to think KU could be in the BCS top 15 when rankings come out this week.

Actually, KU could get to the BCS title game if they run the table because they would be Big XII champions and have wins against Colorado, Missouri, K-State, A&M, and probably Oklahoma. That's a healthy slate to go unbeaten against. Obviously, one loss KU will not be looked upon nearly as favorably as one loss OU or one loss USC or LSU, but they have a chance if they win out.
That said, we had better focus on Colorado, because they have a dangerous football team.

Remember the year KSU had a chance to play for the Natl championship they were undeafted heading into the Big 12 title game and lost. They would have made the BCS title game despite a "cupcake" schedule. I don't see KU going undefeated. BUT, if we beat Colorado we simply need to beat ISU and Neb at home to go to Arrowhead to play MU with a trip to the Big 12 title game on the line. Do the math.

The BCS standings are made up of a combination of the Coaches Poll, Media Poll, and the Sagarin Elo.
The Sagarin-elo has us at #13.
There is no conspiracy to keep KU out of the BCS if they keep winning. What I have been frustrated with are the media and coaches polls continuously starting us way lower in the polls than we finished the year before.
We finish 50th, they assume next year's team will be eightieth, we finish 40th, they assume next years team will be seventieth. It gives us a hell of a long climb to get into the polls every year. I realize that we played a cupcake non-con schedule this year, but many other teams would have been ranked before week five after putting in the performance that this team did simply because they started in a realistic spot.
I guess if this program wants respect, they'll just have to tattoo the name Kansas on each of our opponents foreheads for the rest of the year.

A very, very tough foe in CU on Sat. If we win that one, look out. As I've said before, A & M is the luckiest team in America and we should beat them. OSU will also be tough. NU and ISU stink. MU, of course, is a huge road block to 12-0 but the Tigers are beatable, as they rely almost totally on Daniels. Let's keep sawing wood, one game at a time but 12-0 is doable.

I disagree speedy. Even though the system in college is inherently flawed, the BCS is actually an improvement. If KU were to run the table, I think they could play in the title game. What could hurt them most is strength of schedule but the way teams are getting knocked off this year I'll be surprised if the title game does not have two teams with two or more combined losses. What kept Boise State out last year was the conference they played in.
I think it is quite premature to be talking about it at this time of the season. The Big 12 is very balanced and I don't expect an undefeated team to emerge at seasons end. We have consecutive road games in front of us. I'll be happy if we can come away with one win in the next two weeks.

That was an impressive rant. You are wrong on many levels, spelling inkluded. Look at who is #2 in the BCS right now...South Florida. Before this season they had never been ranked, and unless they lose, there is a very real chane of them playing for the national championship. KU won't get "squeezed" out. We are already ahead of Florida and USC, two powerhouses. And Gonzaga basketball??? You must have been wanting to say that for a while.

we sound just as ignorant as kstate fans used to. to talk about a national championship and running the table is absurd. I've said many times it is possible, but its unlikely, and we know it. many of us thought before the season started that an 8-4 season would be incredible. i think we're realistically staring at a 9-3 finish (tough game against mizzou, oklahoma state, and take your pick of a possible loss against CU or A&M since they're away games). I hope if we end 9-3 we remember how much of an amazing improvement this was this year.
as for the bcs having as many problems as speedy says, his rant is ridiculous. of course strength of schedule has to be factored in. unless your i.q. is below 67, you know that ku has played a pretty soft schedule up until now. strength of schedule HAS to be figured in because otherwise a team like navy could choose to play all softees, win them all, and have a shot at a national championship even though they still never proved themselves against a good team.
stop talking about national championships. keep your mouth shut so ku fans do not look stupid and just secretly hope it happens. otherwise, though, just rejoice that we've been perfect so far and are guaranteed a bowl game, and most likely a great bowl game, at that.

I'm not being optimistic I'm being a realist. IF we can beat CU on Saturday, and that's a big if but if we do that and take care of business at home - regardless of what we do on the road at A&M and OSU - we will enter the MU game at 5-2. Even if MU goes in at 6-1, a win gives us the North. Plus, by beating KSU and CU we own the tiebreakers. National championship talk I believe is crazy but talking about a Big 12 North title is not. We have just as much reason to be talking about it as MU does - if not more at this point.

My point was not that KU will win the national title. I think there is still work to be done to get to that point. My point is that if KU keeps beating the people that are put in front of them (and after yesterdays events, I think KU will be favored in every game from here on until the conference title game except maybe the Missouri game) they will have to be looked at as a potential national title game participant.
That said, the focus right now is on Colorado. Colorado has already beaten OU, so they are at least good enough to give us problems, and if we aren't ready, they will beat us at their place. We have to battle this weekend.

I don't konw why you would automatically pick us to lose against A&M. Sure they have a loud stadium, but so does K-State. And as I've said before, our new offense doesn't rely on the team being able to hear, if you want to change the play all of the players look over at the sideline with the exception of the linemen. Reesing only has to yell at them to give them the new play call. With A&M's defense looking as bad as they have this year (particularly against the pass) I see no reason why KU shouldn't expect a win at College Station.
I also wouldn't count us out for having a pretty solid majority in Arrowhead. Remember that all of the KU season ticket holders got tickets to the game automatically. I think we'll probably split the remainder of the tickets fifty-fifty, giving us a solid majority.
MU's defense is also suspect and we tend to play well against them on most years. In addition, Oklahoma plays a very similar style to us both offensively and defensively, and they just showed where the chinks in the armor lie for a team like Kansas to beat MU. Add that to a defensive backfield that looks better every game and I certainly wouldn't pencil this in as an automatic loss.
I don't know that we'll win them all, but there's no reason to count us out of any game this year.

First we have to win one game at a time, have fun, get psyched every play, plan our attack, and respect our opponent each and every week. If we can do that, and get some good KU crowd support on the road (Boulder, A&M, Arrowhead, etc), then KU could run the table. If, and the emphasis is on "if", KU does this, they would hands down be in the BCS championship game, Jan. 7th. No doubt about it. With the quality wins we would have by that time (including over OU at a neutral site), and by the sheer numbers (for instance, in conjunction with a KU win in Boulder, five teams losing next week in the top 13 would mean we move up 5 spots and probably more), and with the publicity beginning to swell (including Lou Holtz thank goodness), it would be inevitable in five weeks. Inevitable. This year, more than ever, the computers can not hide from a team that is drilling good quality competition and has not lost. LSU was in the title game a few years back and was 12th at this point in the season in BCS standings. And that was a "normal" year. This year is not, all kinds of "top tier" teams are losing. And we are 13th in the BCS. Facts are facts -- the system IS actually set up for a Big 12 team like us to make it. Thank goodness we're in the Big 12 -- then, if we did run the table, we would do what Boise St. did last year and not play for the national championship.... Still, we gotta keep doing what we're doing -- one game at a time, extreme focus and deep respect each opponent. Wherever we play at the end of the year is what we deserve -- we control our destiny. And regardless of us, the BCS system is a good one -- it will have the 2 best college teams a the end of this football season. With some more hard work from our coaches, players and fans, it could be us. go to boulder!!!!!

No question. CU will be tough out there. Keep dreaming big. The sky is the limit with this team. Until someone beats us, I am going to remain very optimistic. As I have said before and as Keegan acknowledges today, we are very balanced, and you better bring your A game if you want to beat a team that is good on both sides of the ball. And, you know what, with the possible exception of the CMU game, we still have not put together a "clean" win. I do like the fact that we are holding needless penalties way down.
