KU soccer suffers key road loss to Houston

The Kansas soccer team sustained a 2-0 loss at Houston on Friday night in its last road match of the season, dealing a blow to the Jayhawks’ positioning in the Big 12 Conference.

With Texas Tech having beaten Baylor on Friday to move into first place, KU can no longer compete for the league title when it hosts the Red Raiders for senior day on Thursday at 6 p.m. The Jayhawks fell to 6-2-2 in the conference, 10-4-2 overall, and have 20 points to Tech’s 25. They also could end Friday night in fifth or sixth place depending on results elsewhere in the league.

KU and Houston went into the half scoreless at the Carl Lewis International Complex, but Ella Morgan volleyed a goal over a leaping Sophie Dawe in the opening minutes of the second half, and instead of the Jayhawks’ typical late-game heroics, Ava Shannon doubled the lead from outside the box in the 79th minute.

Houston goalkeeper Sierra McCluer was only needed for two saves on KU’s eight total shots, despite the Jayhawks attempting 11 corner kicks on the night. Jillian Gregorski took three shots for KU, which had not been shut out since its 1-0 loss at Ohio State on Aug. 20.

After its match with Texas Tech, KU will be headed for the Big 12 tournament, which features the top eight teams in the conference and begins on Nov. 9 in Mansfield, Texas.
