The Kansas football team secured what may end up being one of its most significant commitments of the 2027 cycle on Friday night.

Tight end Mason Oglesby, from New Palestine, Indiana, picked the Jayhawks over Indiana, North Carolina and Ohio State in a livestream on the Rivals YouTube channel.

“Really just the way they’re using tight ends, knowing that I could play there and get the ball a lot, and then on top of that just the opportunity to play early really is what set them apart from everybody else,” Oglesby said.

Oglesby is a three-star prospect on 247Sports and four-star on Rivals who, according to his social media, is up to 6-foot-4 and 230 pounds. He visited Lawrence at the start of May and then received a visit of his own from a handful of KU staff members, including general manager Rob Ianello, offensive coordinator Andy Kotelnicki, co-offensive coordinator/tight ends coach Matt Lubick and passing game coordinator Jim Zebrowski, at New Palestine High School.

The tight end had spoken highly of Kotelnicki prior to his commitment, calling him “one of the best in the business” and pointing out what he had done with Tyler Warren at Penn State in an interview with Rivals’ Steve Wiltfong: “He told me a lot of (different) ways he’d feature me in the offense. It’s really eye opening. On top of the staff it’s that down-home feel. I got along with the guys. They have a good development program.”

Oglesby caught 34 passes for 513 yards and six touchdowns as a junior, per MaxPreps, and also scored an 88-yard rushing touchdown. He tallied 33 tackles, including seven for loss, on the other side of the ball. New Palestine won its second straight state championship.

Missouri, Purdue, Texas Tech, USC and Wisconsin were among the other schools involved with Oglesby at various points that did not ultimately make his top four.

Oglesby becomes KU’s sixth overall commitment in the 2027 class after safety Braiden Graves, quarterback Chance Thomas, running back Trey Stewart, wide receiver Deng Tong and offensive lineman Derek Gonzalez. The addition of Oglesby follows those of two tight ends in the 2026 class, Kevin Sullivan and Jack Utz
