The Kansas football team is heading into peak recruiting season for the 2027 class, and on Sunday it earned its third overall commitment of the cycle.
Trey Stewart, a 6-foot-1, 205-pound running back from Little Rock, Arkansas, announced in an afternoon ceremony at his high school that he will join the Jayhawks for the 2027 season.
“What made me choose Kansas was the love Coach (Jonathan) Wallace and the rest of the staff showed me from the jump and never stopped showing,” Stewart told Jon Kirby of JayhawkSlant.com. “I really liked how all-in they were on me and how genuine everything felt.”
His pledge follows those of Derek Gonzalez, a lineman from La Puente, California, who committed in February, and Deng Tong, a wide receiver from Kansas City, Missouri, who committed in March. Like Gonzalez and Tong, Stewart is a three-star prospect.
The attendee of Little Rock Central High School had accrued a rather prestigious offer list and at one point last December had set a top five that included Arkansas, Miami, Oklahoma, Ole Miss and Penn State. However, his KU offer arrived in early February, and he visited Lawrence near the tail end of spring football; he also made a spring trip to LSU and had seen Arkansas during the winter.
Ultimately, he picked the Jayhawks over the home-state Razorbacks as part of Sunday’s decision. Stewart’s official visit to KU is set for June 12-14.
“It feels great to be committed,” Stewart told Kirby. “I’m excited about my decision and can’t wait to get back up there.”
The Jayhawks have stockpiled young running backs in several recruiting classes. In 2025, they reeled in John Kelly and Justin Thurman, and in 2026 they added Kory Amachree, who has already made noise as an early-enrolling freshman; however, they did lose former 2026 recruit KD Jones, who had been committed to Oklahoma State, then KU, and then flipped back to Oklahoma State when it came time to sign in December.
Stewart’s pledge occurs at a key juncture with KU’s prime official-visit weekends getting underway. The month of June, in particular, will bring many of the Jayhawks’ most coveted prospects to campus.
