Former Kansas guard David Coit announced on Tuesday that he is transferring to Maryland.
Coit leaves the Jayhawks after one season in the program, during which he averaged 5.1 points per game and shot 38.7% from deep in 15.5 minutes per game. He entered the transfer portal on March 31.
Coit would have exhausted his eligibility following the 2024-25 season if not for an NCAA waiver, in the wake of a legal action by Vanderbilt quarterback Diego Pavia, that allowed any former JUCO players whose careers would have ended after the year to play an additional season. Coit had expressed interest during the season in using that extra year at KU, but ultimately decided to depart.
He began his career at Atlantic Cape Community College before playing two seasons at Northern Illinois, averaging 20.8 points per game during the 2023-24 campaign, and then going to KU late in the summer of 2024 after obtaining a waiver to ensure he could become eligible.
There is a preexisting connection between Coit and the Maryland coaching staff.
Before Coit ultimately ended up at KU last summer, he was supposed to go to Texas A&M, but the Aggies ended up filling his spot with a different player. A&M’s coach at the time was Buzz Williams; Williams left for Maryland on April 1, replacing Kevin Willard, who had taken the job at Villanova.
Leaving for Maryland in particular also brings Coit, a New Jersey native, back to the Northeast.
Coit becomes the first former KU player to pick a new destination after entering the portal this offseason. Still looking for future homes are Zach Clemence, Rylan Griffen, Rakease Passmore and AJ Storr, after Flory Bidunga withdrew from the portal and opted to return to the Jayhawks, as he announced on Sunday.
