Each week during the University of Kansas’ sports seasons, the Journal-World staff will select one athlete from a KU men’s sports team and one from a women’s sports team as athletes of the week.
For the week of March 16-22, the selections are Tyson Owens and Meg McCarty.
Tyson Owens, baseball
Owens had a few more scattered hits over the course of an unbeaten week for KU baseball, but his defining performance came on Saturday when he hit a grand slam, three-run home run and walk-off infield single in the same game, tallying eight RBIs in KU’s 9-8 win over Houston as part of a series sweep.
Meg McCarty, tennis
The junior transfer from Montana State won two doubles matches at the No. 2 spot paired with Heike Janse van Vuuren and two singles matches at No. 5 as part of KU’s victories over No. 40 Houston and No. 19 UCF. Against Houston, her hard-fought 4-6, 6-2, 7-6(5) result over Petja Drame served as the decisive final match in the 4-3 win. The Jayhawks have now taken five of their last six matches heading into Friday’s trip to face Arizona State.
