KU rowing comes up short in defense of Kansas Cup versus Kansas State

By Staff report     May 1, 2023

It wasn’t quite smooth sailing for the Kansas rowing team in the Sunflower Showdown versus Kansas State this weekend.

KU rowers fell to the Wildcats at the Sunflower Showdown meet at Wyandotte Lake in Kansas City, Kansas, on Saturday.

The Wildcats won three of the five races to take the Kansas Cup for the first time since 2019.

KU rowers had a good day in the 4-plus races — races that feature four rowers per boat plus a coxswain. KU won both of those races on the day. However, the Jayhawks got swept in the races featuring bigger boats. KU lost all three 8-plus races, which feature eight rowers per boat plus a coxswain.

The event served as Senior Day for KU rowers. Seniors honored at the event included: Kai Alexander, Karlie Brewer, Danielle Brunig, Loretta Brueckner, Amber Haden, Ty Kelly-Martin, Jadyn Jay, Shay Pemberton, Savanah Skack, Grace Wallrapp and Stella Warren.

KU next will compete in the Big 12 Championships on May 14 in Austin, Texas.
