No. 17 West Virginia led wire-to-wire in its 91-79 victory over No. 23 Kansas Saturday afternoon in the WVU Coliseum.

The win gave the Mountaineers (13-5, 6-3) some much-needed revenge in the rematch. The Jayhawks earned a 79-65 win in this matchup at Allen Fieldhouse on Dec. 22. Saturday’s loss also spoiled an opportunity for KU (12-7, 6-5) to get things on the right track with a favorable stretch coming up.

West Virginia raced out to a 12-2 lead in the opening minutes of the game, and never looked back after that. The Mountaineers led by as many as 14 with 1:03 left to play, while having a pair of 20-point scorers in the win.

Miles McBride led WVU with 29 points on 8-of-15 shooting from the floor. Taz Sherman finished with 23 points on a 9-for-17 clip. Derek Culver ended up notching 19 points for the Mountaineers, who have won four of their last five games.

Kansas had five players finish in double figures in the loss.

Here’s a quick look back at some of the action:

• Offensive highlight: To tie the game up, Kansas came through with one of its better offensive plays of the day.

Christian Braun got himself trapped on the baseline, but didn’t ever panic. He was able to find a cutting Marcus Garrett in the lane. Garrett finished off the sequence with a layup, which evened the score at 47-47 with 17:40 left in the game.

It ended a strong stretch by the Jayhawks to start the second half. The visitors needed just two minutes, seven seconds to completely erase a 10-point West Virginia halftime lead.

While Braun’s pass deserves a lot of praise, this play really wouldn’t have been possible without some heads-up off-ball movement by Garrett. It was just a solid play all-around for the Jayhawks during a decisive run.

• Defensive highlight: This seems like a good time to highlight the hustle of Braun in Morgantown.

Braun had not one but two floor burns in the Big 12 matchup against West Virginia. He was called for a traveling violation on the first one, which seemed like a tough call to make live. Braun was rewarded for his hustle on the second one, however.

It was the latest example of what Braun brings to the team, even if he’s not hitting shots.

• Key stat 11.

West Virginia hit 11 shots from beyond the arc in its game against Kansas. Some of them were contested looks near the end of the shot clock. Yet others were wide-open attempts, such as this one late in the first half after KU had cut the deficit to 8 points.

This particular 3-pointer came after the Jayhawks had netted back-to-back layups, and appeared to be swinging the momentum. West Virginia buried consecutive triples to eventually take a 44-34 lead into the locker room at halftime.

Opposing teams shooting well from deep against Kansas is nothing new this year, but it certainly played a part in what took place on Saturday.

• Up next: Kansas will play host to Oklahoma State at 8 p.m. Monday.
