Three Kansas tennis players earned spots on the 2020 academic all-Big 12 first team, the conference announced on Tuesday.

Senior Maria Toran Ribes (majoring in business marketing) was joined by sophomores Julia Deming (sports management) and Sonia Smagina (liberal arts) as three of the 41 women’s tennis players named to the Big 12’s academic first team.

Four others, and 25 men’s players, also earned academic all-conference honors.

Tuesday’s honor marked the second time Toran Ribes has been named to the academic all-Big 12 first team.

“I am very happy for all three of our players,” said KU head coach Todd Chapman in a news release. “Our goals are to succeed on the court and in the classroom and Julia, Maria and Sonia set a great example for our team.”

To earn first-team honors, student-athletes have to maintain a grade-point average of 3.2 or better, while second-team honorees are required to hold a GPA between 3.0 and 3.19.

Freshmen and transfers are not eligible in their first year of academic residence.
