Morgantown, W.Va. ? West Virginia guard Juwan Staten scored a game-high 20 points and the game-winning basket with less than four seconds remaining, as the Mountaineers beat Kansas, 62-61, on Big Monday.
Staten drove and spun to beat the KU defense to the rim in the final seconds, giving him 11 second-half points.
KU forward Perry Ellis (19 points) missed a potential game-winner of his own on the other end just before time expired.
Ellis carried the Jayhawks (21-5 overall, 10-3 Big 12) the entire second half, scoring 15 points after the break, with the help of sophomore guard Frank Mason III (10 second-half points, 18 in the game).
But Kelly Oubre Jr. (14 points), Ellis and Mason were the only Kansas players to score in the final 20 minutes.
West Virginia (20-6, 8-5) scored 17 points off turnovers and 15 second-chance points in the victory, helping the Mountaineers offset a 38-percent shooting night, and a 34-24 points-in-the-paint advantage for Kansas.
The Jayhawks, who committed 14 turnovers and allowed 22 offensive rebounds, return home to Allen Fieldhouse Saturday for a 3 p.m. matchup with TCU. KU won on the road against the Horned Frogs, 64-61, on Jan. 28.
