Fayetteville, Ark. ? Two more Kansas University track-and-field athletes on Friday earned trips to the NCAA Outdoor Championships based on top-12 performances at the West Preliminary at John McDonnell Stadium.
Jessica Maroszek threw 54.99 meters (180 feet, 5 inches) in the discus to place fourth, and Michael Stigler placed second in the 400-meter hurdles in 49.72 seconds.
Stigler’s runner-up finish ended his streak of eight straight victories in the event, but it was more than fast enough to earn him a trip to the June 11-14 NCAAs in Eugene, Oregon.
Several Jayhawks missed out on NCAA berths Friday.
Multi-event specialist Lindsay Vollmer placed 25th in the first round of the 100 hurdles (13.85 seconds, just .01 seconds from earning a spot in today’s quarterfinals), and Dasha Tsema’s discus throw of 50.7 meters (166-4) was less than half an inch short of earning a trip to the finals.
KU now has four athletes headed to the NCAAs.
The Prelims will resume at 10 a.m. today.
