Marquette slips past ‘Nova, 85-75

? Dominic James had six steals, hit five threes and scored 25 points in a stellar all-around effort that led No. 21 Marquette to an 85-75 victory Monday over Villanova.

“Dominic James was great,” Villanova coach Jay Wright said. “He played with great toughness. He hit big-time shots. His threess in the second half were just killers.”

James had plenty of help in Marquette’s fifth straight win.

No. 25 Saint Mary’s 61, San Diego 54

Moraga, Calif. – Tron Smith scored 15 points in his final home game, and Saint Mary’s avenged the only conference loss of the season.

Diamon Simpson had 15 points and 11 rebounds for the Gaels (24-4, 11-1 West Coast Conference).

No. 24 Gonzaga 73, Portland 51

Portland, Ore. – Jeremy Pargo and David Pendergraft both had 13 points for Gonzaga, which remained tied for first place in the West Coast Conference. Micah Downs added 12 points for the Bulldogs (21-7, 11-1), who shot 55.6 percent from the field in the second half. Portland (8-20, 2-10), which led by as many as eight points in the first half, shot just 30 percent in the second half.
