Two and out for Nebraska

By The Associated Press     Jun 4, 2006

? Aaron Poreda repeatedly worked out of trouble in his six-plus innings Saturday, and San Francisco knocked No. 6 national seed Nebraska out of the NCAA Tournament with a 5-1 victory in the Lincoln Regional.

The Dons (39-22) made the most of their scoring opportunities, converting two Nebraska errors and two Tony Watson balks into three runs in the second inning and using a walk, passed ball and sacrifice fly for another run in the sixth.

Joey Railey had the hardest of the Dons’ six hits, lofting his second home run of the season over the left-field fence in the seventh.

Only one of the five runs against Watson was earned.

The Huskers (42-17) stranded runners in scoring position in five of the first seven innings.

The Huskers’ lone run came on Andy Gerch’s home run in the fourth.

Oral Roberts 5, Oklahoma State 4

Fayetteville, Ark. – A Chad Rothford double in the eighth inning sent home two runs – including the winning score – to put Oral Roberts ahead. The loss puts Oklahoma State into a game at 2 p.m. today against Arkansas. The winner will face Oral Roberts (40-14) at 7 p.m.

Baylor 3, Arizona State 2

Houston – Ryan LaMotta (7-6) threw 140 pitches over the remaining eight innings of a suspended game to lead Baylor. LaMotta replaced Cory VanAllen, who started for Baylor (36-24) on Friday and pitched just one inning before rain postponed a scoreless game in the second.

Missouri 5, UC Irvine 4, 14 innings

Malibu, Calif. – J.C. Field scored on a Ryan Lollis pinch-hit single in the top of the 14th to lift Missouri. The Tigers (32-26) rallied for two runs in the top of the ninth to force extra innings in the four-hour, 44-minute marathon at Eddy D. Field Stadium.

UC Irvine (36-24) loaded the bases with one out in the bottom of the ninth but was unable to score as Taylor Holiday grounded into a double play to end the inning.

Stanford 12, Texas 8

Austin, Texas – John Hester’s grand slam put Stanford ahead for good in the second inning, and the Cardinal held on to push defending champion Texas (41-20) to the brink of elimination on its home field.

Oklahoma 8, Houston 6

Norman, Okla. – Ryan Rohlinger hit a three-run homer and had a career-high five RBIs for Oklahoma (41-20).

Steven Guerra (11-3) pitched 71â3 innings for the Sooners, giving up three runs and four hits. He had a no-hitter until the fifth inning, when Houston’s Isa Garcia extended his 10-game hitting streak with a single.

Wichita State 18, Texas Christian 8

Norman, Okla. – Wichita State pounded out 20 hits and routed Texas Christian in a winner’s bracket game.

The 18 runs are the most TCU (39-22) has given up since allowing 20 to Oklahoma on April 5, 2005, and the most that perennial power Wichita State (46-20) has scored in an NCAA regional.
