KU falls to OSU 11-3

By J-W Staff Reports     Jun 3, 2006

Unlike Friday’s NCAA opener, Kansas University’s baseball team could not rally from an early deficit against Oregon State Saturday in its NCAA regional at Goss Stadium in Corvallis, Ore.

A seven-run inning by the Beavers in the second was more than enough as KU managed only three runs and four hits in a 11-3 loss.

The Jayhawks will play Hawaii at 3 p.m. Sunday in an elimination. A win against the Rainbows would earn KU a rematch against OSU.

Game Action

Much like its NCAA opener on Friday, Kansas again finds itself trailing by a hefty margin in the Corvallis, Ore., baseball regional.

In fact the deficit tonight is even worse than the 5-0 lead KU spotted Hawaii yesterday. Jayhawk starter Sean Land was rocked for seven runs in the second innning, six were earned – three coming on a home run by Oregon State’s Chris Kunda.

Meanwhile Kansas had yet to record a hit in the first three innings as the Jayhawks were retired in order in all three frames.

OSU’s Kunda continues to kill the Jayhawks.

The Beavers second baseman launched another homer, this time a two-run shot, to make the score 9-0 after four innings.

KU’s Brock Simpson broke the shutout and OSU pitcher Jonah Nickerson’s no-hitter with a solo home run in the top of the fifth.

Jayhawk Ryne Price added another run on a solo shot in the eighth and John Allman’s infield single cut KU’s deficit to 9-3 with one inning to play.

However, OSU answered with a pair of runs itself in the home half of the inning.
