Kansas’ Battle, Mims advance at track meet

? Kansas University’s Sheldon Battle and Jeremy Mims advanced past the first day of the NCAA Division One Outdoor Track and Field championships Wednesday at Alex Spanos Sports Complex.

Battle threw the hammer 199 feet, 5 inches to place fifth in his heat and moved on to Friday’s final. Mims was second in his heat of the 800 in 1:48.94 and advanced to today’s semis.

In the 110 hurdles, Kansas’ Julius Jiles was fourth in his heat in 14.08 seconds, but he placed fifth in the semifinals in 13.94 and failed to advance to Friday’s final.

KU’s Abby Emsick fouled out of the discus, and in the long jump, Jayhawk Chaarisse Bacchus placed 14th at 19-11â4 and did not advance.

Jayhawks qualify for NCAA Outdoor

Kansas University qualified a handful of athletes for the NCAA Outdoor track and field championships during the weekend regional in Norman, Okla.

Junior Sheldon Battle, who won the shot put and the discus Friday, placed fourth in the hammer throw Saturday with a toss of 206-09. Battle will compete in all three events at the NCAA Outdoor.

Another qualifier is senior Jeremy Mims who finished second in the 800 with a personal best time of 1:46.51.

Senior Brooklyn Hann earned second in the triple jump at 42-1 1â2, and freshman Crystal Manning was third at 41-3 3â4. Sophomore Abby Emsick also advanced by taking fourth in the discus with a 170-1 effort.

The NCAA Outdoor is June 8-11 in Sacramento, Calif.
